It's clear from the very start that this movie has little to do with the 1977-1983 beloved hit TV series. Firstly, the film ignores the capitalisation that would make sense of the title. And the main characters, while they have familiar names, are completely different people. So fans of the show will be justifiably angry that it has been merely referenced to make a half-hearted mash-up of The Hangover and Fast & Furious. Which might not be a bad idea if the gross-out comedy was funny and the action was even remotely thrilling.
In this version, Poncharello is the undercover name assigned to a Miami FBI agent (Michael Pena) who is sent to Los Angeles to investigate a string of armoured car robberies that might involve dirty cops. He is partnered with officer Jon Baker (Dax Shepard) riding motorcycles with the California Highway Patrol (they're CHiPs, not Chips). Jon is a former hotshot off-road motorbike champ who has broken every bone in his body and has only joined the police to try to win back his estranged, monstrous wife (Kristen Bell). But he's such a high-energy idiot that he's starting the job on probation. As their case develops, it's instantly clear that the mastermind is the villainous officer Kurtz (Vincent D'Onofrio). And their investigation is complicated by the arrival of Ponch's FBI boss (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) and partner (Adam Brody).
The lazy script never tries to crank up any real mystery or tension in the plot. Instead, the film is just a series of smutty jokes and incoherent stunt sequences, plus running gags that never reach a punchline. All of this is infused with relentless sexism, as the camera leers shamelessly at every woman. And the laddish misogyny is accompanied by constant homophobia, which is addressed in the dialogue in a feeble attempt to undercut the baldfaced bigotry. This makes all of the characters resolutely unlikeable. Ponch and Jon are such self-absorbed jerks that it's inconceivable that they would ever be allowed to be policemen.

An astute satire of the pop music business, this raucous mock-documentary is consistently hilarious from start to finish. Some of the jokes are corny, but everything about this movie has a point to make about fame and the music industry. The songs are jaw-droppingly wacky, as is the constant string of big-name cameos. And it's anchored on a riotously funny performance by Andy Samberg.
He plays Connor, formerly one-third of the boy band Style Boyz, alongside his childhood friends Owen (Jorma Taccone) and Lawrence (Akica Schaffer). When Conner decided to go solo, Owen tagged along with him as his deejay, while Lawrence angrily left to become a farmer. But sales of Connor's new album are wobbling, and with 32 people on his personal payroll, he needs to bring in the cash. After a marketing scheme to upload his music to kitchen appliances backfires, he heads out on his Connquest world tour, supported by unhinged singer Hunter (Chris Redd). But Owen thinks that what Connor really needs is to make up with Lawrence, and bring the Boyz back together again.
Samberg is perfect as the too-cute musician who believes all the hype and doesn't have a clue what's really happening around him. Even in his ignorance, Connor is hugely likeable, because he never means to be cruel. This makes his interaction with the people around him thoroughly engaging, and often laugh-out-loud funny, from Sarah Silverman's PR guru to Tim Meadows' enthusiastic manager to Maya Rudolph's kitchen appliance queen. Joan Cusack has some marvellous moments as his dotty mum, while Imogen Poots gets the film's best sequence as the "official" girlfriend he proposes to complete with an ill-advised pack of wolves and live music by Seal. And then there's Justin Timberlake as Connor's singing chef.

A New York comedy with vivid characters and a contrived plot, this feels rather a lot like a Woody Allen movie. Although writer-director Rebecca Miller keeps it rather cute and silly, avoiding the more pointed issues raised in her script. Still, the snaky, farcical story is very entertaining, and the witty performances from the terrific cast make it well worth a look.
Greta Gerwig plays Maggie, a woman who has given up on finding the perfect man, so she sets out to have a child using a donation from a pickle entrepreneur (Travis Fimmel). Then just after she has the fertilisation procedure, she falls for her fellow professor John (Ethan Hawke), who's looking for a reason to leave his haughty Danish wife Georgette (Julianne Moore). Three years later, Maggie and John are settled down with their toddler daughter. But Maggie is frustrated that John has become aimless, unable to finish his long-in-the-works novel. She's also somehow ended up raising his and Georgette's kids (Mina Sundwall and Jackson Frazer). So she hatches a plan to get Georgette to take him back.
The premise is ingenious, and Miller fills it in with colourful characters and lots of detail, plus several convenient twists and implausible turns of the plot. This keeps the film from ever becoming more than a bit of nutty fluff, but at least it's entertaining fluff. Gerwig and Hawke are superb as self-involved people whose relationship develops in surprisingly resonant ways. Both are sympathetic but not hugely likeable in the way they remain oblivious to everyone around them, and watching them interact is a lot of fun. But the entire film is stolen by Moore in a hilariously spiky turn as the high-maintenance Georgette, who peers imperiously through her riotous array of furs and scarves but can only barely hide the fragile person inside.

With the passing of each decade, the music industry is constantly set alight by the most recent saviour of pop and Connor4Real is the latest major record label cash cow but behind every great talent there's a whole host of people working behind the scenes to create the finished Connor4Real package.
Maggie's has always been practically minded and now that she's in her thirties and has decided that it's time to have a child, the small issue of not having a partner isn't going to stand in her way. She's never really experienced being head over heels in love so when she meets John Harding (an aspiring novelist) their instant connection comes as a shock to the sometimes bookish Maggie.
As Maggie and John's relationship becomes more and more serious, Maggie seeks advice from her best friends. Falling for John isn't just a usual case of starting a relationship, John has many other people to consider - namely his wife and kids. John has been married to a Danish academic for years but over recent times, the couple have become more and more distant.
Soon John realises that Maggie is a source of inspiration for him and he's ready to move on from his prior life. We fast-forward 2 years down the line and the couple have a child but Maggie isn't quite as head over heels in love with the man she thought John was. Maggie cannot bring herself to leave John and decides to come up a highly unconventional way to try and find a solution to her current predicament.
The project is tentatively titled ‘Maya and Marty in Manhattan’.
NBC has given the green light to a new variety show to be hosted by Maya Rudolph and Martin Short and produced by Lorne Michaels. According to Variety the project has been in the works for more than a year, with NBC aiming for a late May premiere date.

Michaels will also be executive producer with ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ alum Matt Roberts producing alongside Erin David, Rudolph and Short. NBC have confirmed that the series has been ordered, but details about the number of episodes and format are still being ironed out.

From their inspired pairing on Saturday Night Live and their hysterical 2008 comedy Baby Mama to their riotous hosting of the Golden Globes, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are one of the funniest double-acts in recent memory. So even if they make a film as limp as this one, it's still packed with plenty of laughs. With a simplistic premise and obvious gags, the film isn't nearly as clever as they are. But they make it watchable.
As the title suggests, they play siblings: Kate (Fey) is a single mother with no job and nowhere to live, while Maura (Poehler) has never quite recovered from her divorce. Then their parents (Dianne Wiest and James Brolin) announce that they're selling the family home in Orlando, so Kate and Maura return to clean out their childhood bedrooms. And they're inspired to throw one last epic house party, inviting all of their old high school friends (including John Leguizamo), their school arch-nemesis (Maya Rudolph), a beefy drug dealer (John Cena) and a cute new neighbour (Ike Barinholtz).
Unsurprisingly, once the alcohol starts flowing, things get way out of hand.

A sleek and sexy Kate Hudson wowed the red carpet at the New York premiere of her new film Wish I Was Here. She was accompanied on the night by director-cowriter-star Zach Braff as well as costars Donald Faison, Ashley Greene and Joey King. In Los Angeles, Dane Cook, Ed Harris, Julie Bowen, Hal Holbrook, Erik Estrada and Brad Garrett were on hand for the premiere of their new animated film Planes: Fire & Rescue, which was held to benefit the L.A. Surly is an aptly named, grumpy and uncompassionate squirrel who's desperate to go to any lengths to store enough food for the coming winter. As he struggles to forage for nourishment in the city, he meets the rest of the neighbourhood's fauna including an excitable street rat, a fat mole and some simple-minded gophers - all of whom agree to accompany him on a major heist; the robbery of Maury's Nut Store which is guarded by a highly slobbery bulldog. The store is haven of all the kinds of nuts Surly could ever wish for and offers him an extended period of food stability. Along the way, though, he must learn what it is to work as a team and know the importance of the people around him before his temper pushes his friends away for good.

There was nothing remotely notable about 2010's Grown Ups, and now we have a sequel that's even lazier. Without any actual plot to speak of, the movie merely strings together a series of unfunny scenes that include cheap gags and childish vulgarity but never a punchline. Sure, the scattershot approach might occasionally touch on recognisable situations, but there isn't a genuine laugh in the whole film.
After the reunion in the original movie, Lenny (Sandler) has moved back to his hometown with pals Eric, Kurt and Marcus (James, Rock and Spade). They're planning a big party just like in the old days, complete with a 1980s theme. But their children are getting older and have their own issues, including first dates and driving tests. And in Marcus' case, the kid is a teen thug (Ludwig) he only just discovered he had. But the real problem is that the guys have just sparked a turf war with a gang of idiotic fratboys from the nearby university. And now they have to prove once and for all who's really cool.
As with the first movie, you get the feeling that everyone on screen has somewhere better to be. There's no character development at all, since there are so many people spread across so many short scenes. Hayek, Bello and Rudolph are back as the guys' wives, but get exactly one thankless thing to do each. And it's not much better for the supporting cast of A-list cameo players like Buscemi (as a driving instructor), Lautner (as the fraternity leader) and so many more recognisable actors that you begin to wonder what dirt Sandler has on all of them.

Turbo has big dreams for such a small garden snail; dreams that stretch beyond his regular, sluggish, plant-pot dwelling life. He wants to become the fastest mover in the world, even faster than his favourite racing driver, and compete at the IndyCar races, but, as nature would have it, no matter how much training he does, he simply can't gather speed. However, one day, while gazing at the blurry flow of traffic on a highway, his wish comes true when he is sucked into the back of a vehicle and submerged in a tank of nitrous oxide. On making an escape, he finds himself glowing like a lightbulb and zooming past his inching friends a hundred times faster than he ever believed was possible. On his journey to speedy stardom, he meets Whiplash, Skidmark, Burn, Smooth Move and White Shadow; a crew of other racer wannabes who take him under their wings.

Duncan is a 14-year-old boy struggling to fit in anywhere and dealing with all the problems that most teenagers are forced to deal with at some stage. His mother Pam has a new boyfriend, Trent, who happens to be a jerk with a keen interest in humiliating Duncan at every opportunity. As the summer nears, the family embark on a vacation at Trent's beach house where he meets their new neighbour's daughter Susanna who, far from seeing him as a socially awkward and embarrassing individual, warms to Duncan immediately. He also meets the unprofessional and extroverted manager of the Water Wizz water park, Owen, who offers him a job and some excitement on his otherwise uninteresting vacation and subsequently helps him grow in confidence and self-belief.

After accidently finding himself taking a ride on the roof of the racing car of one of the fastest racers in the world, he finds himself flying into a tank of nitrous oxide which transforms his genetic code and makes him one of the fastest moving creatures on Earth, putting other wannabe snail racers to shame.
'Turbo' is the hilarious and delightful new animated movie from DreamWorks about the power of hope and determination in striving to achieve your dreams. It is David Soren's directorial feature film debut, though he has worked on a string of other animated flicks in other departments. He also co-wrote 'Turbo' with Darren Lemke ('Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Shrek Forever After') and Robert D. Siegel ('The Wrestler', 'Big Fan'). It is scheduled to be released in UK cinemas this Autumn on October 18th 2013.
There are rumors abounding that Mary Rudolph’s pregnant with her and Paul Thomas Anderson’s fourth child, with the claims coming about after reports that she informed NBC show Up All Night – which she stars in – of the impending birth.
Congratulations to the pair if so! The pair had their first child, daughter Peal Minnie, in 2005, adding to that with her sister Lucille in 2009 and brother Jack in 2011. The report by The Hollywood Reporter on the potential fourth child comes in attachment with another story they’re running on Up All Night finally coming to a close, owing struggling ratings, with the exit of its chief star Christina Applegate last week possibly the straw that’s broken the camel’s back. It’s thought that Rudolph had told NBC of the impending arrival with a view to them working the pregnancy into the script, but this story now suggests that that won’t matter. At the very least at least she’ll have plenty of time to prepare herself for the birth if the show goes down the pan.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master didn’t quite achieve the critical acclaim many thought it would, with the director missing out on the Oscar shortlist for best director. He returns next with Inherent Vice, an adaptation of a novel by Thomas Pynchon.

After the holiday season, the movie world is slowly cranking up to speed. Although the really big news doesn't start until next week, with the announcement of the Oscar and Bafta nominations.
This week's biggest nominee announcement came from the Producers Guild of America, seen as a taste of the Best Picture Oscar race. The PGA's 10 feature film nominees are: Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Moonrise Kingdom, Silver Linings Playbook, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty.
Turbo is a garden snail with big dreams of becoming the speediest snail in the world. He is seen as a figure of embarrassment among his snail community, his family and his friends for rejecting their slow and steady way of life but is nonetheless determined, through an intensive training routine, to become like his all-time favourite idol, Guy Gagne; a Indianapolis 500 racing champion for IndyCar. One day, his treasured dreams seem set to be realised when, following a freak incident, he develops an incredible superpower that allows him to move at a mind-blowing pace giving him the chance to truly compete at the IndyCar races and win the Indy 500 champion title for himself.
'Turbo' is a wonderful animated family comedy from DreamWorks about determination, hope and achieving your dreams. It is the feature directorial debut of David Soren who has previously worked on 'Shark Tale', 'Madagascar 2' and 'Shrek' in various departments and who also acted as a co-writer for the film alongside Darren Lemke ('Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Shrek Forever After') and Robert D. Siegel ('The Wrestler', 'Big Fan'). It's a delightful little tale due for release much later in the year on October 18th 2013.

But every once in a while... something that really is politically incorrect comes along, like Mike Judge's new comedy, Idiocracy. And instead of the self-congratulatory smugness of Maher's show (and other so-called satirists who pretend to be daring but are actually mainstream), there is only embarrassed silence, except for the sounds of corporate sponsors bailing and studio executives caving in.
