Florence Welch may be recovering from a broken foot, but she’s got even more good news to make her feel better, as the third Florence + The Machine album has entered the American charts at Number One, her first record to reach the summit in the States.

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful sold 137,000 copies in its first week on sale to debut at the top spot in the Billboard 200 albums chart, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As a result, Florence is one of the few artists who have managed to top the American and British albums charts at the same time – the ninth act to do so in the 2010s and the first since Ed Sheeran’s X last year.

Of that figure, a solid 134,000 were direct album sales, a healthy indication of the recent resurgence in physical music purchasing. Blurryface is Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun’s fourth album in total, following their Fueled By Ramen debut Vessel back in 2013.

There’s change at the top of the American albums chart this week as the Zac Brown Band enters at Number 1 with its fourth LP Jekyll + Hyde.

The eight piece ensemble notched up their third consecutive Billboard chart topper by selling 228,000 copies, including track equivalent and streaming equivalent sales, in the week ending May 3rd, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

These are impressive sales figures for the group, which previously had Number 1 albums in 2012 with Uncaged and 2010 with You Get What You Give. Jekyll + Hyde contains two popular singles already, one being the Chris Cornell collaboration ‘Heavy is the Head’ and the other the country-flavoured ‘Homegrown’.

Alabama Shakes Rock To The Top Of The Billboard Albums Chart

Alabama Shakes Yelawolf Drake Taylor Swift Sam Smith Ed Sheeran Meghan Trainor

Rock group Alabama Shakes scored their first Number One album in America with their second effort Sound & Color, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

In quite a low-selling week, the rockers sold 96,000 copies of their sophomore effort to reach the top spot in the Billboard 200 chart. The reformed system counts track equivalent sales and streaming equivalent sales, though some 91,000 of Sound & Color’s sales total came from traditional physical sales.

Alabama Shakes’ debut album Boys & Girls won the group a lot of plaudits upon its release in 2012 for its classic rock sound. It peaked at Number 6 in the American charts, nearly a year after its release, due to its three Grammy nominations in 2013.

No-one was expecting a surprise guest during Meghan Trainor's set at The Institute, so it was doubly exciting to see Nathan Sykes - formerly of The Wanted - show up for a spontaneous duet of her song 'Like I'm Gonna Lose You' (originally featuring John Legend). The singer, who is embarking on a solo career following the split of the band, was already in Birmingham that day having performed at Temple as part of his own 6-date UK tour, and decided to pay his friend a visit.

Apart from winning three accolades - for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Lyrics - Taylor Swift was winning in many other ways. She's been gushing to everyone who'll listen recently  about Queen of Pop Madonna apparently praising her music in an interview, but the 'Blank Space' singer landed the chance to perform with her idol as she and her guitar joined the diva on stage for a rendition of Madonna's new single 'Ghosttown', taken from recently released thirteenth album 'Rebel Heart'.

Imagine Dragons Enter Billboard Chart At The Top

Imagine Dragons Drake Taylor Swift Ed Sheeran Sam Smith Maroon 5 Meghan Trainor Nicki Minaj Hozier

Las Vegas rockers Imagine Dragons have landed straight in at the top spot on the Billboard 200 with their second album Smoke + Mirrors. The group, responsible for the enormous 2012 hit ‘Radioactive’, sold 195,000 units of their sophomore effort in the first week, compiled from physical, track and streaming equivalent sales according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The record is also currenly top of the charts in Britain, and is only new entry inside the Top Ten this week. Despite the impressive figures, Smoke + Mirrors has got a way to go before it tops the sales for their first album Night Visions, which to date has sold 2.5 million copies and has only left the Billboard 100 for two of its 129 weeks on sale. ‘Radioactive’, by itself, has sold in excess of nine million copies in the U.S. But that album only made as high as Number 2 during its run.

Rockers Fall Out Boy have scored their third US Number 1 album, the latest Billboard 200 chart reveals. The group’s sixth studio album American Beauty / American Psycho shifted 218,000 units across all formats during the week ending January 25th, according to figures given by Nielsen SoundScan.

The new record knocked Meghan Trainor’s debut Title, which sold 86,000, down to Number 3, and fended off non-mover Taylor Swift at Number 2 with 119,000 units. It marks the first time since 2010 that a January sales month, typically a quiet time for major releases, has seen two albums debut at the top with sales of over 150,000.

Meghan Trainor - Title Album Review

'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' seems to be the motto running rampant in 'Title', the debut full-length from one of music's hottest stars, Meghan Trainor. After hitting it big - real big - with 2014's smash 'All About That Bass', 'Title' tries to re-create that magic over and over again. For the most part it succeeds, but at the end of the day, the familiar formula ends up losing its charm and becomes real stale, real quick.

Meghan Trainor - Title Album Review

Part of the problem is 'Title''s personnel, which consists almost entirely of Trainor and writer/producer buddy Kevin Kadish. The lack of a million contributors on pop records seems to be a growing trend as evident with the recent outputs by acts like Betty Who and Tove Lo, but the Trainor/Kadish combo here does not produce the same lasting effect as the aforementioned artists. In fact, it's like the duo were so shocked by how popular they became with 'Bass' that they were terrified of losing that popularity.

The follow-up single and closer to 'Title', 'Lips Are Movin', is proof of that. Although it cleverly calls back to 'Bass' in the lyrics (in case people somehow forgot about it after having the song incessantly beaten into their brains over the past six months), 'Movin' is actually an even better 'Bass' than 'Bass' is. However, that's about where their luck runs out. With the record's other upbeat and catchy numbers like 'Dear Future Husband', 'Walkashame', 'Title''s title track and  non-Kadish tune 'Bang Dem Sticks', you're left wondering if there's anything new in Trainor's repertoire that you haven't already heard, as you can essentially start singing the previous song's lyrics over the current song's melodies. Even the ballads grow tiresome after a while, despite John Legend's best efforts to right the ship with his guest spot on 'Like I'm Gonna Lose You'.

Meghan Trainor

Meghan Trainor has equalled Clean Bandit's record for the longest-running UK No.1 of the year after her pop mega-hit 'All About That Bass' secured a fourth week atop the singles chart. It's rare for a single to spend more than a couple of weeks at No.1 in the singles chart - in fact, it has only happened twice since January 2012, with Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines and Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know.

The song has been a global success and also topped charts in Canada, Austria, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Mexico, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, Switzerland the lucrative U.S.

Meghan Trainor’s latest single, All About That Bass – you know, the one you haven’t been able to get out of your head for a month now – has reached No. 1 in the UK charts. The song’s first week out in full release saw it shoot straight for the top of the UK chart, just like it did in the US a month prior.

Meghan Trainor
Trainor's celebration of curves shot her to chart success in the UK and US charts.

Fun fact: according to Billboard, All About That Bass is the first UK chart topper to get there entirely on streaming plays (well, mostly on streaming plays, anyway). Streams of 1.17 million saw it rise 53-33, and after its full release, raced to No. 1 on the Official Charts Company’s new data Sunday (Oct. 5). Its combined sales in the first week come out to 144,000 with 1,4 million streaming plays accounting for about over 9% of the aggregated tally (that means there’s a bit of math involved, so let’s not get too bogged down.)
