The Expendables 3 Review

Good

Striking a tone somewhere between the po-faced original and the silly Part 2, this rampaging action nonsense is badly overcrowded and chaotic, but there's plenty of comedy and whizzy stuntwork to keep the audience entertained. It of course helps a lot that the film is packed to the rafters with iconic actors and lively newcomers. And their sassy dialogue helps make up for the idiotic plot.

It opens with a prison break, as Barney (Sylvester Stallone) and his team (Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Terry Crews) rescue their old cohort Doc (Wesley Snipes) then head off on a mysterious mission that turns out to involve their presumed-dead nemesis Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who is targeting Barney's team. So Barney and his pal Bonaparte (Kelsey Grammer) set about finding four new commandoes (Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell and Victor Ortiz) to take on Stonebanks, but of course nothing goes as plan. For the final face-off they're joined by the old team, CIA boss Drummer (Harrison Ford), former colleagues Trench and Yin (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jet Li), and chatty newcomer Galgo (Antonio Banderas).

The ever-increasing cast means that some characters can't help but be pushed into the shadows (Crews and Li are barely in this film), while others hover around the edges of scenes injecting moments of sarcastic wit. Each of the characters gets his or her moment of eye-popping action, as the film lurches from set-piece to set-piece in a whirl of bombs, bullets and blades. All of this is fun because the actors are gleefully refusing to take any of this seriously. The scene-stealers this time are Gibson, terrific as the swaggering villain, and Banderas, who's hilarious as the only person who can string a sentence together.

'The Expendables 3' Is Saved By Mel Gibson's Clever Conrad Stonebanks

Mel Gibson Sylvester Stallone Jason Statham

The Expendables 3 isn't great -but you knew that already. It's essentially Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham shooting people's heads off, so it can't be good, but one little piece of inspired casting has ensured the movie will be at least filed under guilty pleasure, rather than utter disaster.

The Expendables 3The cast of 'The Expendables 3'

In the team's third outing, Barney (Stallone) and Christmas (Statham) come head-to-head with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson) - the original founder of The Expendables who broke ranks and became a ruthless arms trader. In order to kill his former colleague, Barney must form a fresh team, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy.

Mel Gibson Speaks On Gary Oldman's Controversial Playboy Interview

Mel Gibson

Gary Oldman rushing to the defence of Mel Gibson in the now infamous Playboy interview wasn’t exactly a smart decision.

But finally the ‘Braveheart’ actor has returned the favour by calling him a “good buy.”

Gibson further defends Oldman by just explaining that his words were simply taken out of context.

Gary Oldman's Playboy Apology Just Won't Cut It For Anti-Defamation League

Gary Oldman Alec Baldwin Mel Gibson

Once you get involved in a Hollywood scandal, it’s not easy to pull yourself out - Gary Oldman is finding this out the hard way. After his controversial interview in Playboy, wherein he criticised Hollywood’s “political correctness gone mad” and stood by Alec Baldwin and Mel Gibson for their racist and homophobic remarks. A choice quote from the interview: “I don’t know about Mel. He got drunk and said a few things, but we’ve all said those things. We’re all fucking hypocrites. That’s what I think about it.”

Gary Oldman
The Anti-Defamation League came down hard on Oldman's comments.

He then went on to use the same slurs that Gibson and Baldwin got busted for. Oldman later issued an apology of the “sorry you were offended” variety.

Gary Oldman Offers "Heartfelt, Genuine" Remorse For Mel Gibson Anti-Semitism Defence

Gary Oldman Mel Gibson

Gary Oldman has issued a "heartfelt" and "genuine" apology for comments he made in an interview with Playboy magazine which recently surfaced in which he appeared to be condoning or perpetuating anti-Semitic views by defending Mel Gibson's infamous 2006 rant against Jews.

The apology was issued as an explanation to the Anti-Defamation League and the Simon Weisenthal Center, in response to the ADL's charge that his words propagated anti-Semitic stereotypes.

"I am deeply remorseful that comments I recently made in the Playboy Interview were offensive to many Jewish people. Upon reading my comments in print-I see how insensitive they may be, and how they may indeed contribute to the furtherance of a false stereotype," began the JFK star.

"I Don't Get It": Gary Oldman Shields Mel Gibson's Anti-Semitism

Gary Oldman Mel Gibson

Gary Oldman has become the centre of his own controversy after dipping into the enduring furore surrounding anti-Semitic comments that fellow actor Mel Gibson made in 2006. The Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy actor features in a new interview with Playboy magazine in which he airs his disbelief over the outrage that followed Gibson's outburst.

Describing those who chastised Gibson as "f**king hypocrites," Oldman added "We've all said those things." The 56 year-old continued "We all hide and try to be so politically correct. That's what gets me. I think it's like, take a f**king joke. Get over it."

Gibson was arrested for drink-driving in Malibu and after asking whether the police officer was Jewish, said "F**king Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." The filmmaker apologised, saying the comments were "blurted out in a moment of insanity" and branding the incident as "despicable behaviour."

Will Justin Bieber's Racist Joke Damage His Career?

Justin Bieber Mel Gibson Charlie Sheen Rihanna Karrueche Tran

There’s a lot of words we’d use to describe Justin Bieber, but “racist” wasn’t one of them. That was, until a video emerged of the pop star over the weekend, in which he tells a joke which includes the N-word in the punchline. In the video, Bieber asks, “Why are black people afraid of chainsaws?” Before simulating the sound of a chainsaw, but using the N-word, “Run n*****, n*****, n*****, n*****, n*****.”

Celebrity Racism Bieber has apologised for using the racist word in the punchline of a joke

The video was taken from footage that was filmed for Bieber’s 2011 documentary, “Never Say Never.” Unsurprisingly, it didn’t make the final cut, although that didn’t stop The Sun newspaper from finding and releasing it. Bieber is said to be “frustrated and sad,” and has released a statement regarding the leaked video: “I’m very sorry. I take all my friendships with people of all cultures very seriously and I apologise for offending or hurting anyone with my childish and inexcusable behaviour. I thought it was OK to repeat hurtful words and jokes, but I didn’t realise at the time that it wasn’t funny and that in fact my actions were continuing the ignorance.”

Darren Aronofsky’s Noah might have faced some religious controversy during its initial opening, but its ridden that wave right to the top of the US box office, becoming a certified sucess already. As Aronofsky surely knew, any movie featuring a religious theme or borrowing from the bible is almost certain to find itself in some kind of hot water, whether it causes protests or even ends up getting an outright ban. For some movies the ensuing publicity translates into box office sales, for others, a bit of controversy doesn't end up creating cash. Here are five other films with religious leanings that faced controversy long before Noah stormed the box office.

It seems like having a DUI is sort of a celebrity rite of passage, all of them seem to have one! King of all DUI arrests, Mel Gibson, was arrested in 2006 for driving nearly twice the speed limit after a night of hard partying. In case he wasn’t in enough trouble, Mel then allegedly began to shout anti-semitic remarks. Most celebrities manage to bounce back quickly after their DUIs, but Mel’s reputation has never recovered.

'Machete Kills' Is More Like Machete Overkill: Critics Slam Slasher Sequel

Danny Trejo Robert Rodriguez Charlie Sheen Mel Gibson Lady GaGa Sofia Vergara Amber Heard Jessica Alba Vanessa Hudgens

Machete Cortez is back, and this time he's got the President of the United States for a boss as he embarks on his most outrageous and dangerous adventure yet. In the sequel to 2010's Machete, Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo are both back as director and star respectively, in a film that has plenty to offer if you're up for a B-movie spectacle. It not, you should probably heed the words of warning from most critics, and avoid Machete Kills at all costs. Just go see Gravity or Captain Phillips this weekend instead.

Danny Trejo Micheele Rodriguez
Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez star in the outlandish action movie

The most badass killer every known (in this movie universe at least), Machete has teamed up with the President of the USA (played by Charlie Sheen, who adopted his birth name, Carlos Estévez, for the credits) to stop a plot from anarchist mentalist named Mendez (Demian Bichir) to destroy Washington D.C. with a nuclear bomb.

Machete Kills Review

OK

Robert Rodriguez returns to Grindhouse territory with this B-movie spoof sequel that mixes hilariously knowing jokes with painfully stiff storytelling. Fans of the genre will love it, but those expecting a sense of narrative momentum will find themselves bored when the plot stalls about halfway in. And the rampant misogynistic smirking should be too much for anyone.

After the events of the 2010 original (which itself was based on a mock-trailer from 2007's Grindhouse double bill), the former Mexican agent Machete (Trejo) has been secretly working with US Immigration. After a bust goes badly wrong, he is assigned by the US President (Sheen, performing under his birth-name Carlos Estevez) to capture psychotic drug kingpin Mendez (Bichir) in Mexico. Working with his beauty-queen contact (Heard), he heads into the danger zone pursued by the master-of-disguise Camaleon and immediately running afoul of a vindictive brothel madame (Vergara). Along the way he discovers that the real villain is a defence contractor (Gibson) back in America, so he asks his former partner-in-crime (Michelle Rodriguez) for some help.

Every scene overflows with hyper-violent action and near-naked babes with guns. And the fast-paced mayhem is frequently played out as wacky slapstick, with movie in-jokes and a general sense of chaos. Aside from the amusingly straight-faced Trejo, the actors play everything for laughs. Gibson chomps mercilessly on the scenery during his overlong scenes, while Sheen plays with his own personal history while winking knowingly to the camera. There's also a continuous parade of A-list cameos, including Gaga, Gooding and Banderas hamming up their silly scenes for all they're worth.

However, it soon begins clear that he can't trust everyone around him and discovers that an arms dealer named Luther Voz may actually be the real villain in the situation as he is hatching a dastardly plan to cause chaos in every country in the world. There's something no-one's telling Machete about this business but he'll damn well try to find out what it is.

The trailer has finally been released for Robert Rodriguez's latest action movie: a sequel to 2010's cult-favourite Machete.

The director, who is also responsible for box office hits Sin City and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, hypes his latest follow-up by comparing it to previous successful action series: "We've given the character a much bigger playground. It's going to be like a James Bond movie, with a Bond-style villain", he said, talking to screenrant.com.

Reloaded for a second instalment that we'll have to wait for until its September release, the trailer tantalises the action-hungry filmgoer, with guns, grit, and girl-on-girl violence. Lady Gaga… Doesn’t Do Much In The Machete Kills Trailer

Lady GaGa Charlie Sheen Mel Gibson

Lady GaGa will be making her big-screen bow, but our first glimpse of her in Machete Kills is a bit disappointing. She’s just on the screen for a bit, and then she’s gone. Now we’ll HAVE to fork out to see the film.

Click for the Machete Kills trailer, featuring Lady Gaga

The trailer actually focuses more on some of the film’s other stars, who, admittedly, have dedicated their lives to a career in acting etc etc. Danny Trejo, Sofia Vergara, Michelle Rodriguez, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Alex Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror, and Mel Gibson all make an appearance in someway or another. For instance, Gibson plays a crazy arms dealer, and Sheen, totally ridiculously, plays the President of The United States. We get to see him shooting a big gun, and, let’s face it, we all want to see Obama with a massive gun, so there’ that. Sheen (Mr. President) recruits Trejo (Machete, who kills) to take down Gibson (arms dealer), because obviously, no one else can get he job done.

Sartorial Insult? Was John Galliano Mocking Jews With Hasidic-Style Outfit?

John Galliano Mel Gibson

Are you paying attention, Mel Gibson? Fashion designer John Galliano’s got a real interesting idea when it comes to wriggling your way out of having a terrible reputation as an anti-Semite. Galliano, despite having disgraced himself back in 2011 for making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris café, decided that it might be a good idea to go to his pal Oscar de la Renta’s Fashion Week show in New York, wearing an outfit strongly reminiscent of the outfits worn by Hasidic Jews.

Presumably aware that at some point during the day, he was likely to have his photo taken, the former Dior designer stepped out onto the streets of New York wearing a wide brimmed, homburg-style hat and with his hair curled into side-locks (“peyos”). Galliano has been helping Oscar De La Renta prepare for his 2013 fall collection show but last night, his own choice of outfit shocked the New York Jewish community.

A Williamsburg community leader, Isaac Abraham condemned what he deemed to be a sartorial insult, on Galliano’s part. “He’s trying to embarrass people in the Jewish community," Abraham told the New York Post "and make money on clothes [while] dressed like people he has insulted… If it was just anyone else, I wouldn’t know what to say. But considering who this guy is, considering his background and what he’s said in the past, let him explain it to all of us: Are you mocking us?”

The Beaver Review

Very Good
While there are too many carefully constructed moments in this film, it's a remarkably effective mixture of dark drama and absurd comedy. This is surprising because the premise is more than a little ridiculous.

After a nervous breakdown, Walter (Gibson) is struggling to get back into his role as CEO of a toy company, husband to Meredith (Foster) and father to two boys, smart 17-year-old Porter (Yelchin) and curious young Henry (Stewart).

When Walter finds a beaver puppet, he has an epiphany, letting the beaver say what he's afraid to say. While this helps reinvigorate his business and adds a lively twist to his family life, it's not exactly a permanent solution.

Who Killed The Electric Car? Review

Weak
According to everyone, from Al Gore to Michael Moore to Oliver Stone, in the not so distant future, we're all going to bear witness to a mighty big shit storm (academics have adorably nicknamed this happening "the Apocalypse"). Thusly, everyone from your grandmother to the brother of the guy who directed Capturing the Friedmans is working on a documentary to pinpoint what exactly will be the cause of this shit storm. At last we left it, Al Gore and Davis Guggenheim were telling us that it will be good ol' Mother Nature who finally exacts much-needed revenge on us in An Inconvenient Truth. Chris Paine adds a footnote to that story with Who Killed the Electric Car?

In the '90s, there was a brief moment where it looked like all these oil concerns could be alleviated. Many of the most prominent car companies had designed a car that, much like a cell phone, could simply be plugged in at night and would be ready to drive to and from work when you got up. However, most of these cars never saw the light of day and those that did were quickly called back, even ones that were given to celebrities like Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson. The film presupposes that this was a conspiracy concocted by the oil companies, the government, and the car companies to keep us all sucking at the slick-black oil teat. A good case is made in the film, but it's not really delivered with enough conviction or backing.

Payback Review

Excellent
"Nobody likes a monkey on their back. I had three. I was going to have to lighten the load"

Its dialogue like that that makes Payback the first great film of 1999. Everybody likes to watch jerks on screen. They walk around with a cockiness and lack of respect for anything and everyone that you can't help but love to watch them. In this movie, I think everybody falls into this category.

Braveheart Review

Excellent
Mel Gibson deserves a lot more credit than I've been giving him. A few years ago, no one could have conceived that the action star could pull off the lead role in a dazzling, epic, historical adventure-thriller-romance, let alone direct it. But he does, making Braveheart a vastly entertaining and powerful film.

Gibson plays Scottish hero William Wallace, a Scotsman with simple roots who finds himself thrust into a role as leader of the Scottish revolt against England in the late 13th century. After the despicable King Edward the Longshanks (Edward I) decrees that English nobles will have the right to sexual relations with all newly-wed Scottish women, the revolution is set in motion. Wallace takes up the cause, only to find himself facing incredible odds against a superior English army and fighting Scottish nobles who want to negotiate peace instead of fight. In fact, it's the nobles who turn out to be the bigger obstacle.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Review

Good
Two men enter, one man leave!

Let's face it, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome isn't terribly memorable aside from its to-the-death cage battles, with Mel Gibson's road warrior doing a little battle for Bartertown (headed by a ridiculously over the top Tina Turner). It will all end as expected -- with a bunch of crazy car (and train!) stunts, but why subject us to Mad Max becoming a hero to a bunch of urchin children living out in the boonies? As Turner herself said, we don't need another hero.

We Were Soldiers Review

Good
Post September 11 cinema has seen its share of war movies designed to evoke and sustain a sense of American patriotism. In the last few months, we've re-visited the war in Kosovo (Behind Enemy Lines), the war in Somalia (Black Hawk Down), and most recently, World War II (Hart's War). We Were Soldiers is the latest in the onslaught, a story based on the true accounts of the first bloody battle of the Vietnam War. With so many war films recently released, We Were Soldiers has a difficult task as it tries to ride the patriotism express.

We Were Soldiers is based on the book We Were Soldiers Once...And Young written by Lieutenant Colonel Harold Moore and Joseph L. Galloway, the only journalist willing to go into the front lines to capture a first hand account of the war. In the film, Mel Gibson plays Harold Moore, a down-to-earth officer who is responsible for leading a group of innocent, naive young men into the area of Vietnam known as "The Valley of Death." But not soon after Lt. Col. Moore and his troops touch down, their position is compromised and they find themselves outnumbered almost 5 to 1. The American soldiers engage in a deadly battle for control of the area.

Pocahontas Review

Bad
One of the worst animated films in Disney history, you'll get more genuine history out of a pop-up book than you will in Disney's infamously bad Pocahontas.

In real life, Pocahontas was an Algonquin Indian who is said to have prevented the execution of colonist John Smith in 1607 by her father when she was only 12 years old. Since Smith couldn't speak Powhatan, his interpretation of the events may be mistaken, but it's generally thought today that the story is true. In thanks, Pocahontas was later captured by settlers at Jamestown, taught English, and taken to England where she was celebrated as an "Indian princess" and married off. Before much time could pass, though, she got smallpox (or some other disease) and died at the ripe old age of 23.
