'Lethal Weapon' is the latest movie to get the small screen reboot treatment.
Lethal Weapon has become the latest movie to be rebooted for the small screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Fox is said to have handed out a ‘hefty put-pilot commitment’ for a TV reboot of the classic cop franchise, after a bidding war between networks.
Mel Gibson starred as Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon.
THR writes that NBC was also interested in a series based on the film franchise, which starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. The reboot is being produced by Warner Bros. Television whose film division, Warner Bros. Pictures, also helmed the original movies.

The small screen version will centre on the same main story line as the film, with Texas cop and former Navy SEAL Martin Riggs (played by Gibson in the movie) moving to Los Angeles following the loss of his wife and baby. In LA Riggs gets partnered with LAPD detective Roger Murtaugh (Glover), who after a recent "minor" heart attack, must avoid any stress in his life.
The series will be written by Matt Miller (who previously worked on ‘Chuck’) and he will also executive produce under his Good Session banner. Miller will also be re-teaming with his former ‘Forever’ producer Dan Lin, who will executive produce alongside Jennifer Gwartz.
According to THR, while the film’s original producers are not onboard they having given their blessing to the small screen reboot. The Lethal Weapon franchise started in 1987 and spawned three sequels (1989, 1992 and 1998). The four films ended up taking a combined total of over $955million at the worldwide box office.
