As their twentieth anniversary approaches, prospects of a Spice Girls reunion seem to be in turmoil, with new reports suggesting that Mel C is the main obstacle to a comeback.

Real name Melanie Chisholm, the Liverpool-born singer is said to be unhappy at her bandmates Geri Horner, Emma Bunton and Melanie Brown’s attempts to reform the Spice Girls as a trio – with Victoria Beckham already turning the down the offer to participate – and is consulting lawyers in a bid to block their efforts.

Mel CIs Mel C potentially threatening to resort to legal action to prevent the Spice Girls / GEM reunion?

The recent YouTube announcement that Emma, Mel B and Geri were going to perform a handful of reunion concerts under the name ‘GEM’ (i.e. representing the initials of their first names) were apparently a bid to try to get around this problem.

A source told The Sun on Friday (August 12th): “Mel has told the other girls she is consulting lawyers about whether the reunion can go ahead without her. She believes she brought music credibility to the group and there is no Spice Girls without her. There was talk of using the nickname GEM but they’ve decided against that because the strength is through the Spice brand.”

The source added that, although the five women were all on good terms, the trio were intent on continuing with a reunion regardless of any legal action – but that such a reunion would have to take place in 2017, the group’s 21st anniversary.

Nine years after their last single in 2007, ‘Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)’, the three singers have reportedly got together to record new material, including one track called ‘Song For Her’.

“It will not be released under the GEM name that they gave themselves in their announcement, this is still very much the Spice Girls,” a source told The Sun last month.
