Melissa McCarthy Absolutely Nails Sean Spicer On 'Saturday Night Live'

Melissa McCarthy Saturday Night Live

Melissa McCarthy is the reigning Queen of the Internet after her spot-on impression of White House press secretary Sean Spicer on 'Saturday Night Live' last week. The crazy gum-chewing, aggressive shouting and extremely convincing wig have earned the comedienne over 10.5 million views online.

Melissa McCarthyMelissa McCarthy's impersonation of Sean Spicer is the best thing about SNL

She's best known for starring in the likes of 'Mike and Molly', 'Gilmore Girls' and 'Ghostbusters' but Melissa McCarthy truly outdid herself with her impersonation of Donald Trump's press aide Sean Spicer, who has been frequently mocked by the media ever since he made outrageously false claims about attendance at Trump's presidential inauguation in Washington D.C..

Jennifer Lawrence Named The Highest Earning Female Hollywood Star For Second Year In A Row

Jennifer Lawrence Melissa McCarthy Scarlett Johansson Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Lawrence has been named as the highest-paid female movie star for the second consecutive year, with her earnings from the final instalment of The Hunger Games primarily responsible.

The 26 year old American star’s income for the 12 months spanning June 2015 to June 2016 was $46 million, according to the annual list published by Forbes. Although this was down by approximately 11.5% from last year, it was accounted for by earnings from Mockingjay Part 2, in which she took a cut of the box office takings, and the big-budget X-Men: Apocalypse as well indie hits such as Joy.

Lawrence was also the youngest actress, and the only one under the age of 30, on the list of twenty stars, which substantially looks the same as it did last year.

'Conan' Explores Just How Funny The Han Solo Auditions Could Have Been

Star Wars Bill Hader Melissa McCarthy

The role of a young Han Solo has got to have been the most coveted part known to Hollywood, even taking James Bond into account, so it's difficult to imagine what the auditions might have been like. Luckily for us, we don't have to imagine because the latest 'Conan' sketch has done that for us.

Melissa McCarthyMelissa McCarthy auditions for Han Solo on 'Conan'

Ultimately, it was 26-year-old Alden Ehrenreich who landed the part of Han Solo, taking over from Harrison Ford for a new stand-alone 'Star Wars' film due to be screened in 2018. We know that the likes of Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Scott Eastwood, Taron Egerton and Jack Reynor all auditioned and subsequently lost out, but a new skit on TBS' 'Conan' shows us just how funny it could've been with it's own series of potential auditionees.

Of the social media backlash, McCarthy just laughs. "I don't even talk about it," she says. "It's not like I can improve myself from the criticism. I can't become a better person or a better actor or a better mother, nothing. If somebody has a good point, I am the first to be like, 'Let me have it.' Reports Indicate 'Ghostbusters' May Be Banned From Release In China

Ghostbusters Paul Feig Kristen Wiig Melissa McCarthy

After all the division and controversy over its roll-out last week, the new all-female Ghostbusters re-boot may not be getting a theatrical release in China – but not for that reason…

According to a report in Variety, the newly-released movie has not yet been screened by Chinese censors, but a source suggests that the film is likely to be blocked from release there because of rules that prohibit the promotion of “cults and superstitions”.

Sony has attempted to give Ghostbusters as much chance as possible of passing the censors – if it does come out in China, it will be re-titled Super Power Dare-To-Die Team.

Very Good

After teaming up with Will Ferrell for Get Hard and Ice Cube for two Ride Along movies, Kevin Hart takes on The Rock in this entertaining action-comedy bromance. They make a great couple, as Dwayne Johnson's bulk cleverly contrasts with Hart's tightly wound intensity. Even more enjoyable is that they've essentially swapped roles, with Hart as the straight guy opposite Johnson's awkward goofball.

They play characters who knew each other in high school, when Calvin (Hart) was the king of the campus, captain of every sports team, star of every theatre production, top student and boyfriend of the sexiest cheerleader (Danielle Nicolet), whom he went on to marry. On the other hand, Bob (Johnson) was a badly bullied, overweight kid, who now turns up in town for their 20th reunion as a beefy muscleman. Clearly a little unhinged, Bob is also a rogue CIA operative, hunted by his boss Pam (Amy Ryan) for killing his partner (Aaron Paul) and other crimes he insists he didn't commit. So he ropes Calvin in to help clear his name, but Calvin finds this situation so insane that he's not sure who to believe.

While all of this plays out in a blissfully silly way, there's also a bit of an edge to the movie as it explores the issue of bullying with some gentle nuance that includes racism, sexism and homophobia. So even when it's rude or mindlessly corny, the movie is making a point. That said, the message might have been more convincing without the over-the-top violence that fills all of the action sequences. Thankfully, that never drowns out the terrific chemistry between Johnson and Hart, who bounce hilariously off each other as two men who have been emasculated in very different ways and need to prove themselves. This vulnerability makes both of them easy to identify with, especially as they play with their usual on-screen personas.

The Boss Review

Bad

Melissa McCarthy brings another of her improvisational alter-egos to the big screen with this energetic comedy. The first cause for pause comes because this is a reteaming with her filmmaker husband Ben Falcone, with whom she made the bizarrely unfunny Tammy, as opposed to the filmmaker Paul Feig who directed her to box office triumph with Spy and The Heat and an Oscar nomination in Bridesmaids. Yes, there's a significance difference.

This time she plays hugely popular financial guru Michelle Darnell, whose stardom ends abruptly when she is sent to prison for four months for insider trading. When she's released, everyone she stepped on as she rose to the top turns their back on her, and her nemesis/ex Renault (Peter Dinklage) is still determined to get revenge. The only person who will talk to her is former assistant Claire (Kristen Bell), so Michelle moves in with her family. Unable to restart her business, she also takes over the Dandelion Scout troup of Claire's daughter Rachel (Ella Anderson), pushing the girls to take aggressive measures to sell their cookies.

As always, McCarthy throws herself into the role, creating a vivid character who indulges in a lot of outrageously silly slapstick. As with Tammy, the humour centres more on abusive interaction and humiliation than actual wit. McCarthy and Falcone strain to get laughs from physical wackiness rather than anything based on the character, so the movie only ever feels mildly amusing thanks to its high energy. But there's nothing engaging about Michelle, and it's only in a few cute-warm scenes with the terrific Bell that the film springs to anything resembling life. Thankfully, her scenes with the likeable Tyler Labine (as a potential boyfriend) have a loose humour to them. And Dinklage is surprisingly amusing as the sputtering cartoonish villain, while Kathy Bates generates a few sparks as Michelle's sassy mentor.

Melissa Mccarthy Expanded A Favourite Alter-Ego With The Boss

Melissa McCarthy

This is a character McCarthy has been living with for some 15 years, having created her as part of her stand-up improv routine when she was with The Groundlings. "For me, my favourite character that I created was always Michelle Darnell," McCarthy says. "I loved her so much that I couldn't let her go, and I would randomly bring her up in conversation and talk about her over the years. She's a tricky one, though, because she is so dynamic, so forceful and so confident. Yet Michelle is someone who makes you wonder what lies beneath it all when she says, 'I don't need anyone - other than myself.' In the weirdest way, no matter how extreme she was, she always kind of made sense to me."

Working with her husband, director Ben Falcone, McCarthy was determined not to make a movie that felt like a sketch comedy stretched to feature length. "It's not that Michelle changed very much," she says, "but we figured out how to change or expand her world. We wanted to take this character who had enjoyed everything she ever wanted, but was kind of a terrible human being, then take all of the good stuff away from her and see what she does about it. That's a wonderful journey, I think."

Ghostbusters Paul Feig Kristen Wiig Melissa McCarthy

Nearly 32 years after Ghostbusters first hit cinemas, the full trailer for the all-female re-boot has finally been released – and everything looks pretty faithful to the offbeat, deadpan humour of the original, despite what the sexist naysayers are prophesying.

Director Paul Feig reunites with his long-term creative foils Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy as well as ‘Saturday Night Live’ regulars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. The 53 year old filmmaker has previously described the irate response to the all-girl line-up as “vile, misogynistic s***”, and the trailer looks as if it’ll go a long way to proving him right.

Sharp wit and humour is on display, as well as some neatly touched-up special effects and digitally rendered music, and looks like it’s avoided the pitfall over being overdone in comparison to the much-beloved originals.

At the end, a date of March 3rd is promised for a full trailer, ahead of a scheduled July 15th theatrical release later this year.

The 52 year old director, who has previously helmed movies such as Bridesmaids and Knocked Up, told The Huffington Post on Monday: “I want to write to the things I want them to be discussing and not be discussing. I have no desire to do, at this point in time, a romantic comedy where it's all about… talking about a guy or this and that. I love to be able to pass the Bechdel test.”

On Its Second Weekend, "Transformers: Age Of Extinction" Trumps Tammy At The Box Office

Mark Wahlberg Melissa McCarthy

Box office winner time. No need for a spoiler alert here – it was Transformers: Age of Extinction. The franchise’s only competitor this weekend was Melissa McCarthey’s Tammy and with lukewarm reviews, the indie comedy was just no match for the selling power of a bunch of giant robots. Age of Extinction’s $36.4 million mark a 63% drop in its second weekend, but still managed to keep its lead in the chart, with Tammy taking in just $21,2 million for the three-day period. It was a low week for the box office in general, despite the 4th of July being a typical sales booster.

Transformers: Age of Extinction Still
Despite unfavorable reviews, Transformers is doing well at the box office.

"This ranks as one of the lowest Fourth of Julys ever," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak, Said for the Huffington Post. "We always think of Fourth of July being a big weekend. This year, we just have to lick our wounds and look forward to 'Planet of the Apes' and some other films to get us back on track."

'Tammy' Sees McCarthy In A Familiar Role

Melissa McCarthy

After a career playing bubbly, enthusiastic characters in small roles, Melissa McCarthy hit the big time with her Oscar-nominated turn in 2011's Bridesmaids. But she has played essentially the same character in her last three films: as a sociopath in Identity Thief, a cop in The Heat and now a woman on the run in Tammy.

All three of these characters begin as out-of-control slobs, overweight and unkempt, impulsive and self-absorbed. And over the course of the film they discover others might like them better if they wore slightly less hideous clothing and combed their hair. Admittedly, McCarthy is great at this kind of role, but the joke is beginning to wear rather thin.

‘Tammy’ Has All The Makings Of A Hilarious Hit, So Why Aren’t Critics Impressed?

Melissa McCarthy Ben Falcone Susan Sarandon

It's nearly July 4th which means at least one thing: Melissa McCarthy's new comedy Tammy is being released this weekend. The hilarious trailer for the movie gives a glimpse into the hijinks of McCarthy's titular "heroine" as she is forced to turn to crime to get herself out of a pickle.

The Bridesmaids actress finally takes centre stage in her own comedy, which is directed by her husband Ben Falcone. After somehow managing to pull off an unlikely robbery at a fast foopd restaurant, the now-fugitive Tammy hits the road with her grandmother (Susan Sarandon) and heads to Niagara Falls. However, the pair must work hard to evade the police, getting caught up in many hilariously outrageous situations along the way.

Early critics have had chance to mull over the movie, and unfortunately for Melissa, Tammy hasn't been given a clean bill of health. Describing the film as an "unfortunate, though ambitious and intermittently enjoyable, misfire," the AP's Jocelyn Noveck fails to be immersed in the movie structure of Tammy, saying "Other recent comedies have been described as elongated "Saturday Night Live" skits, but it's especially apt here.

However, it doesn't take a top designer to look the bee's knees while walking the red carpet, just ask Melissa McCarthy.

The comedic actress, who doesn't have your average female Hollywood body figure, recently revealed that several designers refused to make a dress in her size for the Oscars.

Champion Of Positive Body Image Lena Dunham Responds To Vogue Cover Controversy

Lena Dunham Melissa McCarthy Gabourey Sidibe Mindy Kaling Jennifer Lawrence

More and more attention has been brought to magazines’ rampant retouching of stars on their covers – Melissa McCarthy, Gabourey Sidibe, Mindy Kaling and even Jennifer Lawrence have been retouched beyond recognition in recent months. The most recent victim of this trend is Lena Dunham, who graces the cover of this month’s Vogue.

Lena Dunham, Girls UK Premiere
The creator of Girls was confused by the backlash against her Vogue shots.

The situation is made even more complicated by the fact that Dunham advocates and writes about body positivity and self acceptance. It’s no surprise then, that her edited cover made a big splash online.

Teen Choice Awards List Nominees Anounced: The Usual Suspects

Katy Perry Leonardo Dicaprio Channing Tatum Hugh Jackman Johnny Depp Robert Downey Jr Sandra Bullock Gwyneth Paltrow Jennifer Aniston Melissa McCarthy Scarlett Johansson

It’s that time of the year again – time for the most important awards of the season, the People’s Choice Awards (wink, wink, nudge, nudge.) This year the favorites are easy to pick out from the crowd. The award show will be held in January and today was the day that the nominees were finally announced.

Katy Perry
The super successful Katy Perry is the favorite in several musical categories.

In the world of TV, Glee is the favorite, with eight nominations, proving that nothing can keep this show down. That may or may not be a good thing. Meanwhile, Katy Perry seems to be the people’s favorite when it comes to music. The Roar singer has nabbed five nods. Coincidentally, that’s also Sandra Bullock’s number. The Gravity actress heads up the movie division.

Melissa McCarthy Penelope Cruz Reese Witherspoon Naomie Harris Marion Cotillard

Melissa McCarthy is covering this month’s issue of Elle magazine, following a year of career successes. The other five women included in the annual Women in Hollywood issue are Penelope Cruz, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Harris, Shailene Woodley and Marion Cotillard. The problem with this lineup is that, while all of the other women were photographed in form-fitting, rather revealing dresses, crop tops, bodysuits and the like, McCarthy’s cover shows her wearing a bulky trench coat in what is a very “editorial” look, but at the same time, makes it seem like the comedienne is getting a different treatment to her peers because of her size. There are, of course, other problems with the issue as well, such as the fact that only one actress out of the lineup is a woman of colour.

Melissa McCarthy, The Heat Premiere
The trenchcoat does seem to fit in with McCarthy's usual style.

Despite some commenters interpreting it this way, according to McCarthy’s reps, the actress picked out the outfit herself – surely there could be no objection to that. For her part, the actress isn’t offended by the stylistic choice and, in fact, feels delighted to have taken part in the shoot."

Poor Pacific Rim: Is Sandler's Soaring 'Grown Ups 2' The Worst Movie...Ever?

Adam Sandler Guillermo Del Toro Disney Sandra Bullock Melissa McCarthy Russell Brand Steve Carell

Yeah, we had a feeling this might happen. The $190 million budget of Pacific Rim is seemingly looking further away than ever after Guillermo Del Toro's blockbuster took just $38.3 million on its box-office debut over the weekend. The Idris-Elba starring movie - which courted mainly negative reviews - is now on course to become a loss making movie for Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures.

As expected, it was the superb Despicable Me 2 that maintained the No.1 spot on its second weekend, grossing $44.8 million for a domestic total of $229.2 million and establishing itself as one of the success stories of the year. The animated flick featuring the voices of Russell Brand and Steve Carell also topped the global box office for the weekend with $100.5 million in ticket sales, Pacific Rim followed with $91.3 million.

Sony executives will have been jumping for joy on Sunday, with news that Adam Sandler's comedy sequel Grown Ups 2 opened to a stellar $42.5 million domestically. In fact, Sony were so happy they released a cheery statement for us all to read, via the Hollywood Reporter:

Critics may have universally panned Adam Sandler's latest comedic contribution yet it's somehow managed to beat the other new release, Pacific Rim, in the US Weekend Box Office (12th-14th July). Despicable Me 2 topped the Box Office charts for the second week in a row.

Monsters University spent its second week at No.1 in the US Weekend Box Office grossing $46.2 million. Monsters University includes some big names from the acting community including Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Dame Helen Mirren.

The Heat's Wave Of Reviews Is Hardly Warm - Melissa McCarthy And Sandra Bullock Play It Safe

Melissa McCarthy Sandra Bullock Michael Caine Demian Bichir Michael Rapaport Marlon Wayans Jane Curtin

Critical reviews of The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, have been more lukewarm than scolding.

Sandra Bullock plays Sarah Ashburn, an FBI agent incapable of having fun (sounds familiar?), who is paired up with rotund police officer Shannon Mullins, played by Melissa McCarthy (again –does this remind you of everything?)

In fact, throw in a camp Michael Caine and an awkward ginger haired English actor and voilà! You have a bizarre combination of Miss Congeniality and Hot Fuzz

Melissa McCarthy Responds (At Last) To Critic Who Called Her A "Hippo" And "Tractor-Sized"

Melissa McCarthy

Melissa McCarthy will be the first to admit that she doesn't exactly adhere to the usual conventions of a Hollywood leading lady, but when someone directly and harshly pokes fun at her weight you can bet that she won't take the jibes lying down. That has been the case of one New York Observer reviewer who described the actress as "tractor-sized" and being a "hippo" in a review about her film Identity Thief back in February this year, with the actress (finally) hitting back at the critic.

Critic Rex Reed made his review of McCarthy's recent film a little more personal that others, describing the Bridesmaids star as "tractor-sized” and “a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success."

In the time between then and now a number of people have lambasted on Reed's harsh comments, but it wasn't until this week, during an interview with the New York Times, that McCarthy herself got to give Reed a piece of her mind. Whilst being interviewed about her part in the new buddy-cop movie The Heat (in which she stars alongside Sandra Bullock), the in-demand actress said, “I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought, that’s someone who’s in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs.”

The Hangover Part III Review

Bad

For the final instalment of the trilogy, filmmaker Todd Phillips takes a sharp left turn, abandoning the formula of the first two movies to send the Wolf Pack on a road thriller that isn't remotely funny. A few wacky moments are provided by the actors, but there isn't one punchline in the entire film. And it doesn't really work as a thriller either, since there's no real suspense.

Once again it starts in Los Angeles, where everyone has recovered from their antics in Bangkok. But Phil, Stu and Doug (Cooper, Helms and Bartha) are worried that Alan (Galifianakis) is refusing to grow up, so they hold an intervention and set out to drive him to a desert retreat. On the way, they're waylaid by mobster Marshall (Goodman), who holds Doug hostage to force the the Wolf Pack to find renegade nutcase Chow (Jeong), who has stolen Marshall's stash of gold bars. They track Chow to Mexico, but things quickly get even messier as Chow slips through their fingers. And to catch him, they'll have to return to the scene of their original adventure: Las Vegas.

There isn't much to the screenplay, which is a series of action scenes and caper-style set-pieces strung together with rapid-fire dialog and general vulgarity. But while the film is expertly shot and edited, with a solid cast and terrific settings, there simply isn't any actual humour. No one gets drunk, so there's no hangover this time. And the only amusing moments are offhanded character bits that are utterly irrelevant to the nonsensical chaos of the plot. Which kind of makes us wonder why we ever found these losers so hilarious to begin with.

Sandra Bullock Promotes 'The Heat' At CinemaCon, Director Paul Feig Expresses Support For Boston

Sandra Bullock Melissa McCarthy Paul Feig

Paul Feig, director of the upcoming cop flick “The Heat”, starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, expressed his support for Boston and its citizens, following the marathon bombing earlier this week.

Feig, whose upcoming flick is set in Boston, praised the resilience of bostonions, saying: "If any city had to get through adversity, this is the city to do it" during a talk at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. His mention of the attack was one of few at the convention. The other one was made by Chris Pine, prior to the screening of “Star Treck Into Darkness” on Monday. Pine’s statement aimed to draw a parallel between the bombings and the plot of his upcoming movie, in which a terrorist attack is executed against “Starfleet”. "Terrorism is a big part of our lives," Pine said.

Feig’s “The Heat” has been eagerly anticipated ever since the first trailer was released. As an addition to the “buddy cop” sub-genre, it puts somewhat of a fresh twist on the story, by making the main characters female. Despite the grim comment before the screening, the film itself was received very well by the initial audience. “The Heat” is due for official release across US theatres on June 28th.

The Hangover III Trailer

Alan Garner is going through real emotional trauma when his beloved father passes away. Following the funeral, his friends Stu, Phil and Doug decide to take him back to Las Vegas to recuperate with the hope that previous experience and lack of upcoming weddings will prevent them from getting into any major trouble again with gangs or escaped wild animals. However, that hope is soon shattered when they are jumped by a brutal gang who demand to know where they can find their flamboyant gangster friend Leslie Chow who has allegedly stole $21 million dollars. As expected, the Wolfpack end up in enormous, but hilarious, trouble yet again which leads them to question their friendship ties and vacation choices. Will the foursome survive Sin City this time round? And will Alan find the peace he's looking for?

The Wolfpack returns in the last instalment of this side-splitting trilogy. Academy Award nominated director Todd Phillips ('Road Trip', 'Due Date') returns once more with the co-writer from 'Part II', Craig Mazin ('Identity Thief', 'Superhero Movie', 'Scary Movie 4'). It looks to be a spectacular end to the film series as the foursome's previous alcohol-fuelled vacations come back to haunt them. It is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on May 24th 2013.

The Hangover Part III - Teaser Trailer

Stu, Phil, Alan and Doug return to Las Vegas in the hilarious third instalment of 'The Hangover' movie series. Nobody's getting married this time, but if you think the absence of a bachelor party will calm this lot down, you are so wrong. Following the events of 'The Hangover' which saw them get attacked by gangsters, mauled by a tiger, tasered by cops and inadvertently married, and of course the events of 'The Hangover Part II' which took them to Thailand where they got tattooed, shot by Russian mobsters and had sex with transgender hookers, the conclusion to this trilogy doesn't look to fare much better as these wild boys set out for one last mayhem-fuelled weekend in Sin City.

Second Time Around: Melissa McCarthy To Host 'Saturday Night Live' In April

Melissa McCarthy Justin Timberlake

One of Hollywood’s most sought-after comic actresses is set to host Saturday Night Live once more. Melissa McCarthy is rumored to be hosting the show in April, according to Us Weekly. It’s the second time in two years that the Bridesmaids star has taken on the hosting duties for the high profile chat show and she’ll be reappearing on our screens on April 6, 2013.

The Oscar-nominated comic star has been in the cinemas recently with Identity Thief, which defied the seriously negative response that it got from movie critics, to top the box office charts on its release. Also starring Jason Bateman, the movie is a comic caper about a con-woman (McCarthy) who steals a man’s identity (Bateman) and subsequently threatens his chances of a work promotion. He manages to track her down and a battle of wills commences. McCarthy’s career began when she worked for an improv troupe in Los Angeles. Her debut Saturday Night Live stint in October got rave reviews and it’s likely that the loveable actress will do the same this time around.

A Good Day To Die Hard - Not Dead Yet As Bruce Willis Tops The Box Office

Bruce Willis Melissa McCarthy

No longer a solid trilogy, the Die Hard franchise now boasts a quintet of films with arrival of A Good Day To Die Hard. And while many critics denounced the film as rubbish, plans are to make a 6th. And why wouldn’t you if you keep topping the box office?

A round $25m saw the latest Bruce Willis action bonanza shoot to the top spot, but it’s not as if it was surrounded by critically acclaimed films – far from it. Second was Identity Thief, starring Melissa McCarthy, which managed a paltry 24% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. That didn’t stop it from accumulating over $23m over the weekend, though. Another film with a derisory review score (13% to be exact), Safe Haven managed 3rd in the box office with a touch over $21m. All we can confidently surmise from these figures is that a lot of people have seen a lot of bad films this weekend.

Escape From Planet Earth, as you probably guessed, also didn’t fair too well with the critics, but as a silly kids film, claims redemption from the rest. It came in 4th with $16m. And what’s this? A film with a decent review score? It is! Warm Bodies - last week at #2 drops down to fifth position with $9m on its third week of release. There’s your top 5 box office films this weekend, now scram!

This Is 40 Review

Very Good

This overlong comedy is so episodic that watching it is exactly like sitting through five episodes of a sitcom back-to-back. It's funny and enjoyable, with characters we enjoy watching, but they continually spiral back to where they started, and in the end we feel like there's been a lot of fuss about nothing. Even so, the script offers plenty of hilarious observational humour, and the cast is thoroughly entertaining.

Reprising their roles from Knocked Up, Rudd and Mann play Debbie and Pete, who turn 40 within a week of each other. But Debbie isn't coping very well with it, and her emotions swing wildly from steamy lust to fiery rage while Pete just tries to hang on. Their daughters (played by Apatow and Mann's real daughters Maude and Iris) each have their own issues to stir into the mix. And then Pete's needy father (Brooks) turns up with problems of his own, forcing Debbie to think about her own distant father (Lithgow). Meanwhile, the economic crunch is causing problems for both of their businesses.

Yes, both of them own businesses. This is not the typical struggling 40-something couple, so it's not easy to sympathise with many of their issues. Fortunately, Apatow's dialog is packed with brazen honesty and an appreciation for rude gags that keep us laughing even in the absence of an actual storyline we can get involved in (although there's one major plot point along the way). Rudd and Mann were arguably the best thing in Knocked Up, so it's great to let them take the spotlight here, making the most of their sparky interaction. And aside from experts like Brooks and Lithgow, there is a continual stream of superb side roles, including Fox as Debbie's oversexed and possibly embezzling employee and McCarthy as a furious school parent (her big scene is expanded into a brilliantly improvised outtake riff in the closing credits).

Hot Tickets! US Movie Releases: Will Tom Cruise Make Or Break 'Jack Reacher'? Is 'This Is 40' As Good As 'Knocked Up'?

Tom Cruise Judd Apatow Paul Rudd Melissa McCarthy Megan Fox Ewan McGregor Naomi Watts Kristen Stewart Amy Adams Sam Riley Viggo Mortensen Kirsten Dunst

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is riding high in the US box office charts (way higher than its nearest competitor, Rise of the Guardians) this week and it’s unlikely that will change, though there are at least two releases this weekend that have been causing a stir. Tom Cruise stars in Jack Reacher – the adaptation of the Lee Child novel and This Is 40, the new comedy from Judd Apatow; a sequel to the popular comedy Knocked Up.

Some fans of Lee Child’s novels questioned the decision to cast Tom Cruise in the title role of Jack Reacher. He was, after all, originally on board as a producer only but after reading the script, it seems, he decided he’d like to have a go at starring in the movie too. It looks as though the gamble has just about paid off, as long as you enter the movie theatre with the understanding that what you are about to see is very much A Tom Cruise Movie, with Tom Cruise in standard Tom Cruise “cool and calculating” mode, as described by Betsy Sharkey of Los Angeles Times.

So far, the reviews are just about erring on the side of positive, with an aggregate of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. Let’s face it, Tom Cruise’s rep has hardly had an easy ride this year and this is hardly challenging new ground for the Mission Impossible star, who has frequented many a steely action thriller of late. However, many reviewers have surmised that really, it’s Cruise that makes this movie. “This is Cruise’s show. And he nails it,” says Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. One for the Cruise fans, then. Wherever you are.

Sandra Bullock And Melissa McCarthy Hit Up Disneyland!

Sandra Bullock Melissa McCarthy Alfonso Cuaron George Clooney

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy were snapped wandering around Disneyland on Thursday afternoon, but don't worry, the Hollywood superstars had their young children with them (well, one of them did). The Heat co-stars were joined by Bullock's son Louis and Melissa's husband Ben Falcone, reports E! Online.

Earlier this month, Sandra and Louis, 2, had a 'play date' with Melissa and her daughters Vivian, 5, and Georgette, 2, at the Bridesmaids actress' home. The pair star together in the forthcoming comedy The Heat, about an uptight FBI special agent who is paired with Boston cop Shannon Mullins in order to take down a ruthless drug lord. The problem is that neither have ever had a partner, or a friend for that matter. Director Paul Feig recently told E! Online that Sandra an Melissa "really became the best of friends" during filming, "Their chemistry was so quick and good right off the bat," he said.

Though the movie is likely to perform strongly at the box-office, Bullock will be keeping a close eye on the reception to Gravity - Alfonso Cuaron's forthcoming sci-fi thriller that will be vying for a slew of awards. Also starring George Clooney, it follows astronauts who attempt to return to earth after debris crashes into their space shuttle, leaving them drifting alone in space.

The Heat Trailer

Sarah Ashburn is an FBI special agent with an unmatched record for closed cases. However, she is as much valuable as she is disliked as her flawless reputation has inflated her ego and turned her into a control freak who repeatedly fails to be a team player among her fellow agents. When her boss sends her to Boston, little does she know that she's about to meet her match in the shape of Detective Shannon Mullins; a loud-mouthed cop who has also never been good at working with other cops and makes for a truly formidable adversary. However, it is to everyone's surprise when these tough-talking law enforcers succeed in partnering up to bring in a particularly ruthless mobster with serious drug connections and manage to work together in interrogating his known associates. It soon becomes clear that these ladies are becoming less in the way of crime-fighting partners and more in the way of best friends.

This fantastic bad girl comedy sees Sandra Bullock ('Miss Congeniality') as an FBI agent yet again and, for this reason alone, guarantees it to become a huge comedy flick. Directed by Paul Feig ('Bridesmaids') and written by Katie Dippold ('MADtv', 'Parks and Recreation'), 'The Heat' is set to hit screens on April 5th 2013.

Interview with Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids 23 June 2011

Melissa McCarthy shot to fame as the irrepressible chef Sookie St James in the TV series The Gilmore Girls. On the big screen, she has varied her roles between comedy (The Back-up Plan and Life As We Know It) and suspense (opposite Ryan Reynolds in The Nines). Now she gets to shamelessly steal scenes from Kristen Wiig in this summer's comedy hit Bridesmaids.
