Back in June (15), the actress sent a note to all 535 politicians along with a copy of an equal rights book, calling for the country's laws to be amended to make sure women can no longer face discrimination, but Streep has revealed her letter was largely ignored.

During an appearance at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, Streep told reporters, "I sent them each a book called Equal Means Equal by Jessica Neuwirth. It's about the revival of the attempt to get an ERA (Equal Rights Amendment), that would codify in law that you can't discriminate against women. I got five answers."

In the letter, Streep wrote, "I am writing to ask you to stand up for equality - for your mother, your daughter, your sister, your wife or yourself - by actively supporting the Equal Rights Amendment. A whole new generation of women and girls are talking about equality - equal pay, equal protection from sexual assault, equal rights."
