Director Cary Fukunaga adapts Charlotte Bronte's classic novel Jane Eyre. The plot stays true to the book and shows Jane at different stages of her life. It tries to show the darker and more gothic undertones that Bronte would've been surrounded by whilst she was writing the novel.
Jane Eyre was never given an easy life, orphaned early on she was taken in by her aunt but never treated as one of her family, she was then sent to school where she also suffered hardship. Finally growing up, she found herself working as a governess for the affluent Edward Rochester Jane feels the need to escape the grounds of Thornfield House. As Jane looks back on her life, she must look to her past which haunts her to enable her to secure a future.
