The hit Showtime series will be available to stream on 31 October
Dexter is back! Well, not back, but it is available to watch once again as online streaming giants Netflix have bought the full rights to the hit Showtime series. The show, which ended for good in September, won't be available to binge watch unfortunately though, as the streaming service will only be making season one to four available at the end of the month, with the rest of the series being uploaded on 1 January.
This won't be Dexter's first foray into the world of online streaming, as fans will remember that the show was initially made available on Netflix until 2011. The show was taken down from the subscriber service two years ago when CBS and Netflix renegotiated their streaming contract - a move that also took Californication away from the site - but now both sides have come to an agreement and will begin distributing the show to online viewers once again.
“We’re thrilled to have Dexter, one of Showtime’s highest-rated shows on Netflix, and so quickly after it completed its record-breaking run,” Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, said in a statement (quoted by Variety). "This is one of the great serialized dramas of the past decade and we know our members will enjoy discovering or reliving the twisted world of Dexter Morgan anywhere and anytime they want.”
CBS responded to the agreement by saying that they are pleased to able to distribute the hit program to its "passionate fan base" as well as flaunting it "to a whole new online audience."
The move is extra good news for Netflix as it give them another critically acclaimed series to put among its rooster. The streaming service took note of the importance of these shows when it published its most recent quarterly earnings, which marked a significant interest in show it had acquired from cable and network broadcasters, as opposed to their own programming.
