Michael Douglas Shifts From Ant-Man To Beyond The Reach

Michael Douglas

Michael Douglas' two movies this year couldn't be much more different, moving from the snappy thrills of Ant-Man to the dark tension of Beyond the Reach. The two-time Oscar-winner admits that he likes to try new things with each project.

Ant-Man was something of a dream come true. "Well, I just wanted to do one of these pics, you know," he says. "My entire career is movies that have just been contemporary stories, with no special effects. So this was just the excitement of saying, 'Hey, I want to get into Marvel world!' It's larger than life, and there's a certain theatricality about it."

Beyond The Reach Review

Good

With a spectacular setting and two solid actors on-screen, this thriller builds enough solid suspense to distract the audience from the implausible premise. Frankly, the screenwriter might have got away with it if he had avoided the temptation to indulge in some wacky bunny-boiler plotting. But Michael Douglas and Jeremy Irvine throw themselves into the situation in a way that's both gripping and entertaining.

In rural New Mexico, local orphan Ben (Irvine) has found happiness with his girlfriend Laina (Hanna Mangan Lawrence). Then she heads to Denver for university, so he throws himself into his job as a tracker working with the local small-town sheriff (Ronny Cox). His next job is to escort the cocky billionaire John (Douglas) out to the reach to hunt bighorn. But once the two men are in the wilderness, an unexpected incident reveals John's willingness to ignore the law. And now he needs to silence Ben. So John sends Ben into the desert wearing just his underpants, following him to make sure he dies unsuspiciously in the cruel sunshine. But he of course underestimates Ben's experience and resourcefulness.

The cat-and-mouse story holds the interest due to the actors, because it's never remotely believable that John's fancy jeep could keep up with the fleet-footed Ben through all of these rock-strewn mountains and ravines. And there's never even the slightest explanation for John's sudden burst of sadism. But never mind, Douglas sells the character through sheer charisma, swaggering across the Wild West like a man who has never lost at anything and doesn't intend to now. Meanwhile, Irvine throws himself into a physically demanding role that has some surprising emotional resonance. His moral dilemma is palpable, as his integrity wobbles in the face of a fistful of cash. Together, they make a terrific odd couple, with their constant distrusting glances and bald-faced bravado.

Ant-Man Review

Excellent

The increasingly stale Marvel formula gets a blast of fresh air in this rollocking adventure movie, which combines a steady stream of character-based comedy with action sequences that are integrated seamlessly into the plot. Like last summer's Guardians of the Galaxy, the film departs from the usual tired structure to joyously tell a story that's more than pure escapism.

Released from prison after a stint for burglary, Scott (Paul Rudd) is struggling to restart his life when he has an unexpected encounter with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), an inventor who needs his help. Hank's technology company is being steered away from his original vision to help mankind by his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and his protege Darren (Corey Stoll), who see a chance to make a lot of money by selling Hank's ideas to the highest bidder. Hank's biggest breakthrough is a suit that shrinks the wearer down to ant-size, allowing for all kinds of unexpected possibilities. Pushed into a corner, Scott starts learning how to master the suit. But his ex-wife (Judy Greer) is now engaged to a cop (Bobby Cannavale) who's keeping his eye on Scott.

One of director Peyton Reed's main challenges was to sell the whole idea of an insect-sized warrior, and he does that fairly effortlessly, revealing an increasingly cool series of possibilities in each action sequence. These set-pieces emerge organically from the story, combining comedy and exhilaratingly coherent action to push the narrative forward. One of the best moments is an encounter with one of the Avengers (Anthony Mackie's Falcon), which offers a strong hint about how Ant-Man can liven up the franchise as a whole. And the climactic sequence is an inspired collision of mind-bending effects and inventive humorous touches (Thomas the Tank Engine nearly steals the whole film). Plus two post-credit stings for the fanboys.

Michael Douglas Says Social Media Is To Blame For American Actors Missing Out On Biggest Roles

Michael Douglas Dustin Hoffman Tom Holland Andrew Garfield

Michael Douglas has bemoaned what he calls a “crisis” in the American movie industry, based on diminishing opportunities given to home-grown actors ahead of their British and Australian counterparts which he believes is down to their pre-occupation with social media and image instead of formal training.

He believes that young British actors are more likely to take acting school seriously and learn their profession the old-fashioned way, while Australian male stars are more overtly “masculine” in their image than U.S. actors.

70 year old Douglas said to The Independent: “There's something going on with young American actors - both men and women - because the Brits and Australians are taking many of the best American roles from them.”

Deserts are inhospitable places at the best of times. For one young man, things are about to become a whole lot worse. Ben (Jeremy Irvine) has been living on the edge of civilisation for years, helping to lead trappers and hunters safely through the desert to experience some of the most wild and dangerous hunting on the planet. Paul Rudd Michael Douglas

Marvel Studios has released the first full trailer for Ant-Man, giving fans their first real look at Paul Rudd as the shrinking man himself. The internet pretty much imploded when this one hit last night and where better to gauge the critical reaction than on the hallowed pages of Reddit?

Ant ManPaul Rudd as Scott Lang in Ant-Man

But first: a little background. Ant-Man is a weird one. It doesn't carry the same anticipation as The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America 3 or even Doctor Strange, though it's an intriguing movie with an intriguing cast. It was intended as a project for the innovative British filmmaker Edgar Wright though after disagreements over the script, he moved on. Still the major cast - Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas - remained and Peyton Reed came in as director.

Marvel Announces Release Date For Unknown Movie - What Could It Be?

Robert Downey Jr Michael Douglas

Last week Marvel studios took the unusual step of announcing five upcoming movie release dates stretching into 2019 without actually announcing what movies they would be. Now they’ve added another date for that schedule: May 4th 2018.

Robert Downey Jr Susan Downey
Robert Downey Jr, pictured here with wife Susan, is unsure of his future role with the Iron Man films

Presumably this has been made possible because of the recent news that Sony has pushed back the release date of The Amazing Spiderman 3. The projected Amazing Spiderman 4 movie had been due to be released on May 4th 2018, but obviously that date has now become available.

SuperMensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon Review

Excellent

For his lively film directing debut, Mike Myers (aka Austin Powers) traces the remarkable life of his friend, the almost too-likeable music manager Shep Gordon. A mensch is a really nice guy, and this film documents how Gordon has created a makeshift family of loyal friends around him, even though he's never had a proper family of his own. It's an engaging movie that reminds audiences that the most important thing in life is certainly not fame.

Shep Gordon came to Los Angeles as a young man and happened to stay in the same hotel where Joplin, Hendrix and Morrison were hanging out. Quickly getting involved in their blurry world of drugs and money, Shep won over everyone he met simply because of his integrity and generosity. As a manager, he lived the high-life with high-powered girlfriends like Sharon Stone (who introduced him to Buddhism) and a Playboy Playmate wife. He helped Groucho Marx sort out his finances, and worked with lifelong pal Alice Cooper to create Cooper's iconic on-stage persona. And he's still considered one of the best fix-it men in the business. His home in Maui is a bolt-hole for any of his celebrity buddies who are trying to escape the limelight.

The film is assembled with a snappy rhythm that catches a sense of Shep's fast-paced lifestyle. It's packed with great film clips, hilarious home movies and even a few re-enactments. But the best stories are told by the starry interviewees who clearly adore Shep and recount riotous backstage anecdotes about their experiences with him, as well as his larger-than-life personality and unstoppable libido. The most jaw-dropping story is about how he ramped up clean-cut Canadian singer Anne Murray's reputation and career by having her photographed with super-cool lothario Teddy Pendergrass. But with a life this high-flying, Shep has never found a life partner or had his own children. Although he has become a father figure to his ex-wife's kids, essentially raising them himself.

Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon Trailer

Shep Gordon may not be as famous as some of the biggest celebrities in the world, but you can bet they count him among their closest friends. A popular Jewish music manager who took on the career after meeting Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, Shep's first subject was shock rocker Alice Cooper in 1965. Since then, his Hollywood career has exploded having also worked alongside the likes of Pink Floyd, Luther Vandross, Blondie, Ann Murray and others. Not only that, but Shep instigated the breakthrough of celebrity chefs and also become close personal friends with the 14th Dalai Lama during his venture into Buddhism. Now, though, after a life of luxury and living other people's lives, this 'mensch' as his star friends call him (a Yiddish word essentially meaning 'a good person') is looking for a life of his own.

Adam McKay Paul Rudd Evangeline Lilly Michael Douglas Edgar Wright

It's another is he-isn't he situations which will never truly be resolved unless Adam McKay chooses to take the position as Ant Man director, or it'll just remain another unconfirmed rumour. Ant Man has been in a state of development since 2003 and there still seems to be some troubles even with filming about to start this summer. Adam McKay
Adam McKay is rumoured to be in talks with Marvel.

Edgar Wright, who has been working on the movie's script since 2003, resigned last week over creative differences. Reports suggest Marvel changed Wright's script without his permission. Wright not only penned the screenplay but was also set to direct, leaving the Ant Man team in dire need of a director. As Variety reported, McKay was seemingly in talks with the film's producers and may be stepping in to take over from Wright.

Evangeline Lilly In Talks With Marvel For 'Ant-Man'

Evangeline Lilly Paul Rudd Michael Pena Michael Douglas

Ant-Man's love interest may be played by Evangeline Lilly. Lilly who has most recently appeared as the elf Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, is rumoured to be in early talks with Marvel, according to Variety.

The 34-year-old actress could be, should talks prove successful and media outlets accurate, starring as the daughter of Hank Pym and the love interest of Scott Lang/Ant-Man in the 2015 Marvel film adaptation of their comic-book classic. Paul Rudd, best known for his comedic roles in Friends and Anchorman, is set to star as Ant-Man, a superhero who is able to change his size. Michael Douglas will be involved in the project and Michael Peña (Gangster Squad) is also rumoured to have been cast in the film.

In comic book lore, there have been three Ant-Men: the first being Hank Pym, a scientist who first discovers how to alter his size using a substance he creates. Pym, in the upcoming adaptation, will be played by Michael Douglas. Although Pym did not have a daughter in the comics (strangely Lang did) this may be director and co-writer Edgar Wright's new different approach to the film.

How Homophobic Were Jared Leto And Michael Douglas' Golden Globes Acceptance Speeches? [Video]

Jared Leto Michael Douglas

Jared Leto and Michael Douglas each won a Golden Globe award last night for their stand-out performances in very different films. Both actors' characters share the similarity of being part of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community with Leto's Rayon a transgender woman suffering with AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club and Douglas' gay Liberace lifted from real life in Behind The Candelabra.

With such high profile awards for what would have traditionally been controversial roles, the actors' wins mark a great leap forward for the portrayal of LGBT characters in movies and a move to eradicate homophobia and stereotyping in cinema. Whilst these positives cannot be denied, it has been noted in the wake of the initial glow and glamour of the awards that not every aspect of Leto and Douglas' win is cause for celebration.
