Actress Diana Douglas the mother of Michael Douglas and the first wife of Kirk Douglas has died aged 92, her husband Donald Webster confirmed. Douglas died on Friday at the Motion Picture and Television Home in Woodland Hills, California, following a battle with cancer.

The actress was married to the legendary Kirk Douglas from 1943 until their divorce in 1951 and they had two children together, actor Michael and Joel who is a film producer. Diana and Kirk had maintained a good relationship even after the end of their marriage and they went on to star together in 2003 comedy It Runs In The Family.

In the film Kirk and Diana starred as the husband and wife at the head of a dysfunctional New York family, alongside Michael as their son and Cameron Douglas (Michael’s son with Diandra Douglas) as their grandson. It would Diana’s final film.

Speaking to CNN, Donald Webster, who married the actress in 2002, described Diana as, “A person much beloved by everyone. One of her greatest qualities was that she was always thinking of the other person.”

Born Diana Dill in Bermuda in 1923, Douglas began her film career in the early 1940s. Before the war she had met Kirk Douglas while they were both studying acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, they eventually married in 1943.

In 1956 she marred actor Bill Darrid and the couple stayed together until his death in 1992. Diana is survived by her sons Michael Douglas and Joel Douglas, as well as grandchildren Cameron Douglas, Dylan Michael Douglas and Carys Zeta Douglas.
