Michael Douglas' speech at the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday was one of the highlights of the show, and not just because the show itself was a bit of a bore itself and he gave one of the funniest, and most innuendo-ridden monologues of the night. But after his light-hearted response to winning the award, the acting great moved on to more serious matters, bringing up his "wife Catherine," and his son, Cameron Douglas.

Cameron is currently serving a 10 year prison sentence for drug peddling and backstage at the Emmys, where Michael won the award for 'Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie' for his role as Liberace in Behind the Candelabra, he discussed his son's incarceration and what he described as "disappointing" reflection on the US justice system.

"I'm hoping I'll be able to...[they'll] allow me to see him soon," he said in his speech, before leaving the stage with his award.

It's been two years since Cameron was put away, and although Michael admitted that he was "disappointed" in his son at the time, and still is now, he went on to say that as the years have gone by he's reevaluated his thought process on what he now sees is an ineffective prison system. He told reportes, as quoted by Us Weekly; "Well, my son is in federal prison based upon – he's been a drug addict for a large part of his life and was arrested for selling drugs and is in federal prison. And part of their punishments if you happen to have a slip - this is for a prisoner who is nonviolent - as about a half a million of our drug addicted prisoners are, they punish you. So for my son's case, he's spent almost 2 years in solitary confinement and right now I'm being told that I cannot see him for two years."

"It's over a year now and I'm questioning the system," he continued. "Obviously, at first, I was certainly disappointed with my son, but I've reached a point now where I'm very very disappointed with the system and, as you can see, from what [U.S.] Attorney General Eric Holder has been doing - and other issues regarding our prison system - I think things are going to be revived regarding nonviolent drug addicts/criminals. My last comment on that is the United States represents 5 percent of the world's population and we have 25 percent of the world's prisoners."

Douglas' other serious mention on the night was about his wife, with whom he is reportedly separated from and has been for some time. The two were last spotted together in April this year, but according to Douglas, there is hope that the two might get back together again. For the time-being though, the actor and actress will continue to spend time apart and work on their relationship in their own separate ways.
