Withdrawn sports hustler Cornelius Rawlings disappeared from his family's Tennessee farm eighteen years ago. As suddenly as he left, he returns; his parents are dead but his brothers - Ezra and Amos - are still there, although Cornelius' absence has impacted on their everyday lives.
While they want to know where he's been and despite attempts by his brothers to bond as a family, Cornelius is still as reclusive as ever, preferring to hustle cash on the basketball and tennis courts, where he shows exceptional but unexpected talent. The brothers, too, are as distant as Cornelius. Ezra is house proud to an almost obsessive compulsive degree and Amos is a self-taught artist whose pictures are violently disturbing.
Rather than facing their collective demons, which come in the form of a plumber disguised as their high-school football coach one day and a young girl the next, the three brothers' retreat into their respective talents. In order to bring their lives and consciences back to normal, it will take the work of a strange, wandering preacher.
