MidiMidis - The Good Ship, London, 9th October Live Review

Review of Midimidis live at The Good Ship London 9th October 09.

Midimidis

Well, we don't like to be smug here at Contactmusic .com but it seems we were right to back the MidiMidis earlier on in the year - they have since been taking the industry by storm! It was recently announced they were one of the winners of the Sentric Music's In The City Showcase competition. They saw off thousands of other unsigned artists to win the chance to play at the massive industry event in Manchester later this month. So what's all the fuss about? We went down to their recent London gig to find out.

The sunken stage at The Good Ship is one of London's great small venues and saw host to a number of bands during the course of the evening, but it was the opening act and the MidiMidis that really stood out. Kicking off events were Elliot To Hong Kong, one of the most energetic live bands we've seen in a while. Their frenetic electro indie pop and male-female vocals immediately drew in the crowd.think Crystal Castles but more engaging -these guys are definitely ones to watch!

Then taking to the stage with a Super Mario Brothers intro, the MidiMidis launched into their brilliant 8 bit mash up, combining it with flashes of Sonic Youth and The Strokes to create their unique sound. The likes of Mayuko and the upcoming debut single Ambulance Café made it very clear they are much more than your standard 8 bit electro band. Their songs, despite being full of eclectic noise are strong on melody and identity. Fairley's unique vocals and intonation act as another instrument thrown into the mix. His heartfelt Strokes esq drawl coupled with the shoe-gazing, thrashy guitar transports you straight back to 70s New York yet their overall sound is visionary and fresh.

The chaotic delivery of MidiMidis 'classics' Note-To-Self and closing track Nemesis got by far the biggest reaction of the night, but if there was one complaint, it was that the set was too short. That said, with the speed and amount of energy it takes to deliver their frantic songs, it is not surprising and the MidiMidis are nothing short of a joy to watch live.

MidiMidis' debut single 'Ambulance Café' is out on November 2nd on iTunes.
