A Campaign By Hollywood Moviemakers Mike Leigh, Ken Loach And Pedro Almodovar Has Failed To Secure The Freedom Of UKrainian Director Oleg Sentsov And He Has Been Put On Trial In Russia On Terrorism Charges.
The Gamer moviemaker was arrested in May, 2014 after attending a protest against the invasion of his native Crimea by Russian troops earlier in the year (14).
Russian authorities accused him of organising terrorist activities, and a group of European directors, including Leigh, Loach, Almodovar, Stephen Daldry and Wim Wenders, launched a public campaign urging Russian leader Vladimir Putin to release him.
The drive was unsuccessful and Sentsov, 39, went on trial in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don this week (beg20Jul15), with prosecutors alleging he created a terrorist group and carried out a series of attacks in an attempt to destabilise the region.
Sentsov has denied the charges against him, and declared in court, "I consider this case to be political and falsified."
