Miley Cyrus opened up in a recent interview about her relationship with ex-fiancé Liam Hemsworth. It seems the couple may well have been undergoing difficulties as early as February.

The interview, which appears in Canada's Fashion Magazine, also includes Cyrus; opinions on fashion, her music and her controversial MTV VMA performance. Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth officially ended their yearlong engagement (and three year relationship) on 17th September. Cyrus alluded to difficulties between the couple many months before their official separation.

Cyrus stated her song 'Drive' was about her troubled relationship with Liam Hemsworth. In the interview she stated, "I wrote it while I was working on Valentine's Day, emotionally it was such a hard time." It appears Cyrus may well have wanted to leave Hemsworth many months before their final separation, as the song is "about needing to leave someone but not really wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It's a time when you want to leave but you can't." However it seems there are positive aspects to Cyrus' song as she stated "It's also about moving on."

On that matter, Cyrus does not appear to have found a new love, unlike Hemsworth who has wasted no time in hooking up with Mexican singer-actress Eiza Gonzalez. Hemsworth was spotted kissing Gonzalez mere days after his representative confirmed his split from Cyrus.

Shortly before the couple's split, Cyrus performed at the MTV VMAs causing controversy with her sexually explicit dancing. Appearing on stage with 'Blurred Lines' singer Robin Thicke, her performance caused outrage worldwide. However, Cyrus claimed her appearance had been deliberately edited. On this subject, Cyrus said "I was trying to slap Robin's ass but no one saw it! Believe me! MTV edited so much. They cut almost everything I did."

Regardless of how she may have appeared on screen, Cyrus continued to defend her performance, stating "I'm proud of that performance. I feel like music is really stale right now. I could have guessed what a lot of artists would have done that night. The reaction to what I did has been insane. I think it was a breath of fresh air! For the people that don't get it, you weren't meant to."

Cyrus' interview comes ahead of the release of her new album Bangerz, due to be released on October 7th.
