Paul McCartney On Miley Cyrus And A New Crop Of Pop Stars: "Only Mildly Shocking"

It’s hard to deny that Miley Cyrus is the talk of the town these days, but one person, who isn’t all that impressed, is Sir Paul McCartney. Not impressed by all the heat the young singer has been getting that is. McCartney is a respected name in the music business and has managed to maintain a near spotless reputation through the years, so he might know a thing or two about surviving in show business.

After Miley’s twerk-tastic VMA performance from August, everyone and their grandmother rushed to condemn her for “corrupting the youth of America” and/or offered advice on cleaning up her image, protecting her dignity, etc. McCartney, on the other hand, provided a more level-headed opinion, saying in an interview with Sky News: "Come on, we’ve seen worse than that!"

In fact, he sounded almost disappointed that Miley wasn’t wreaking worse havoc, after witnessing her highly publicized performance: “I watched it as an experiment to check, but you look at it and you say 'what’s everyone shouting about?'" he added.

"I think it was only mildly shocking […] it wasn’t explicit at all."

Or was that a challenge?

By now the VMA performance is old news and Miley has survived to shock another day. Lest anyone thinks that McCartney is anything, but current, however, he also spoke his mind about One Direction. In what must be quite a blow to scores of Beatles shirt-wearing hipsters out there, Macca admitted to enjoying a bit of 1D himself. He also disagreed with the comparison between the boy band and the Beatles.

"I always think it’s unfortunate for a band to be called the new Beatles because it can be the kiss of death," he said, adding: "People expect you to live up to what we did, and we did what we did in a particular period in time, which is very different from now."

Some One Direction talk was also on the agenda.
