Will 'Despicable Me 2' Break More Records For Universal?

Steve Carell Russell Brand Miranda Cosgrove Kristen Wiig

Despicable Me 2’s special July 4th was independent in more ways that one: it was Universals biggest ever opening for a movie, with a total of $34.3m on Wednesday, despite most American’s enjoying the seasonally good weather. This has set it up to perform well over the weekend, as those little minions continue to delight audiences.

Despicable Me 2 GruGru being a family man

The hilarious animation – starring Steve Carell as the evil genius-cum-family man Gru – followed up the impressive Wednesday with a solid Thursday, managing $23.5m. All in all, a domestic total of $84.3m so far is good going, especially considering it’s still got a holiday weekend to sell. Even better news for Universal is, considering it’s an animation, it was rather cheap, costing a mere $76m to make – it’s already broken even and more!

Despicable Me 2, the sequel to the first 2010 film, is due to be released in cinemas on Wednesday. Early critical reviews have been largely positive. Keith Uhlich of the New York Times said the franchise has improved since the last film and that it is "delights more often than it disappoints".

Whilst most of the critics have enjoyed the film there are others who criticised Universal Pictures for its lack of originality. Ryan Gilbey of The Statesman said the film is "a completely redundant follow-up to the perfectly delightful 2010 original". Others have drawn comparisons with Monsters University, claiming Despicable Me 2 "has more laughs in the first 5 minutes" than Monsters managed in 90 (according to Roger Moore of McClatchy-Tribune News Service).

Video - Miranda Cosgrove Talks Gru-Zinkerbell, Romance And Singing Minions In 'Despicable Me 2' Interview

Miranda Cosgrove is interviewed about her role as Gru's adopted daughter Margo in the animated comedy sequel 'Despicable Me 2'. She mentions Gru's new fatherly role, the differences from the first one and her favourite bits of the movie.

'In the beginning of 'Despicable Me 2' he's Gru-zinkerbell', she says, citing an example of the newly lovable Gru. 'The fairy princess that's gonna come to the big birthday party can't make it so he doesn't want to let all the little kids down so he dresses up. It's really sweet and I think it definitely shows how much he cares.' Despite having many of the same characters, Miranda insists the sequel is pretty different. 'This one I feel there's a lot of romance in it and it's more about love; like Gru's falling in love for the first time and my character Margo has a love interest', she reveals. She also adds, 'I'm really excited for audiences to see the Minions singing. I think those were some of my favourite parts.'

Despicable Me 2 Trailer

Having hatched an evil plot to steal the moon in the first movie, Gru appears to have let fatherhood take over from his dastardly passions after the adoption of Agnes, Edith and Margo. However, his bad deeds have not been forgotten. As his new daughters get older, he is forced to join Agent Lucy Wilde of the Anti-Villain League in their plot to overthrow a new evil rival with plans way beyond their competency. While his minions attempt to rescue him from this difficult new project, he is ultimately forced to agree to the mission after facing formidable, if ridiculously named, company director Silas Ramsbottom. It's Gru's first time on the side of good - but will he find it a suitable career move from his former immoral ways? Or will this new evil give him plenty of new ideas?

'Despicable Me 2' was the hugely anticipated follow-up to Golden Globe nominated animation 'Despicable Me'. From the producers of 'Ice Age' and 'Shark Tale', it has been directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud ('The Lorax') alongside writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio ('The Santa Clause 2', 'Horton Hears a Who!', 'Hop'). Featuring that smash hit single 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams, the film was released in July 2013.
