Actress Mischa Barton has said her recent hospitalisation was due to her drink being spiked with date rape drug GBH during her birthday celebrations.

On Friday TMZ reported the actress had been take to hospital for a voluntary psychiatric evaluation after police responded to a disturbance at her home.

In a statement to People magazine, the actress explained: “On the evening of the 25th, I went out with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. While having drinks, I realised that something was not right as my behaviour was becoming erratic and continued to intensify over the next several hours.”

“I voluntarily went to get professional help, and I was informed by their staff that I had been given GHB. After an overnight stay, I am home and doing well,” the statement continued.

“I would like to extend a big thanks of gratitude to the professionals at Cedars-Sinai for their great care and professionalism. This is a lesson to all young women out there, be aware of your surroundings.”

On Friday TMZ published pictures of the actress in her back garden wearing just a shirt and a tie, in which she appeared to be screaming over her fence. A source told the gossip site Mischa had been “rambling about her mom being a witch, the world shattering… and Ziggy Stardust. At one point she fell backward off the fence and said, ‘Oh my God, it's over! I feel it, and it's angry!’”

Mischa was previously placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold back in 2009. She later told People: “It was a full-on breakdown. It was terrifying. I was never suicidal, I was just overworked and depressed. But one slip of the tongue in a heightened moment and you find yourself in that situation.”
