For those of you that still don’t believe a movie adaption of Jem and The Holograms is – or at least will – exist, it just got a whole lot more believable. Deadline is reporting that Juliette Lewis and Molly Ringwald are signed on to star.

Lewis, the Oscar-nominated star of Natural Born Killers and Due Date, will join the live-action film adaption, which is based on the 1980s cartoon and popular line of toys in a ‘mystery role’, reports the industry site.

Ringwald, the “actress, writer, singer, mother, your former teen-age crush” – according to her Twitter bio – revealed her role on the micro-blogging site, tweeting a link to a Hollywood Reporter story containing the news and the words: “Finally get to talk about it!”

The film, which has already begun filming in Los Angeles, is being directed by G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer John M. Chu. Aubrey Peeples will play the titular character. Hayley Kiyoko (Lemonade Mouth) is Aja, Stefanie Scott (A.N.T. Farm) is Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, and Ryan Guzman will play Jem’s love interest Rio.

“I’m especially curious to see how well the show can appeal to a current generation of kids. My hunch is that in spite of the age of the show, the underlying appeal of the stories will be strong enough to draw in new viewers,” explained Christy Marx, the creator of Jem and the holograms explained in an interview with The Mary Sue way back in September 2011.

“I certainly love to write strong, independent female characters, no matter what the medium. The two projects are pretty far removed in every other way, though. As much as I loved Jem, it was someone else’s property, whereas I created and own The Sisterhood completely.”
