Review of Monarchy Album by Monarchy

Having previously remixed the likes of Lady Gaga and Ellie Goulding, London based duo Monarchy now release their own work on the Mercury label. It will be preceded by a handful of shows across the UK, followed by appearances in Germany and France.

Monarchy Monarchy Album

The current popularity of synth based music makes the release of this debut album well timed, as the music of Monarchy is very based around electronic tones. The simple chorus of 'Love Get Out Of My Way' produces a euphoric anthem, while 'We Were Young' proves aptly titled as it is reminiscent of eighties' pop music. 'You Don't Want To Dance For Me' carries a swagger that the London duo just about get away with, but there are lesser shining moments such as the mercifully short 'Around The Sun'. With its vocals not too dissimilar to Brandon Flowers', 'Floating Cars' could be aimed at The Killers' fans, but in truth the track wouldn't make any of the Las Vegas outfits' records. All in all this self-titled effort is very much a mixed bag, with some songs making for an enjoyable listen, but there are equally as many which are quite easily skipped.
