Lamar Davenport was arrested and charged over the death of Edena Hines, 33, in August (15) after she succumbed to injuries sustained in a brutal knife attack outside her New York City home.

Davenport, who is being held under doctors' care in a psychiatric hospital, appeared in a Manhattan court on Tuesday (22Sep15), when prosecutors revealed Hines had been stabbed 25 times in the attack.

Authorities also claimed to have obtained witness statements placing Davenport at the scene of the crime, but he denied all responsibility for the slaying, reports

During the hearing, Davenport's attorneys also revealed their client, 31, is set to begin psychiatric examinations at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital to determine whether he is mentally stable enough to be transferred to jail.

In the hours after Hines' death hit headlines, Freeman paid tribute to his beloved relative, stating, "The world will never know her artistry in talent, and how much she had to offer. Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace."

The aspiring actress, who accompanied Freeman to the 2005 Golden Globe Awards as his date, was the granddaughter of the actor's first wife, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw.
