Biography

Morgan Spurlock (born 7.11.1970) Morgan Spurlock is a US documentary film-maker, TV producer, journalist and screenwriter. He is perhaps best known for the documentary Super Size Me.

Career: As a child, Morgan Spurlock attended Woodrow Wilson High School in West Virginia and graduated in 1989. IN 1993, he then graduated with a film degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

Spurlock then enjoyed a spell as a successful playwright and won awards for his play The Phoenix. He then went on to create the series I Bet You Will, for the MTV channel. It was a light-hearted series of 5-minute programmes, featuring members of the public doing unusual or disgusting things for cash. It started out as a webcast and was so popular that MTV adopted the show.

In 2004, Morgan Spurlock released Super Size Me in the US. The film was then nominated for Best Documentary at that year's Academy Award. The idea for the documentary came when Spurlock watched a news story about two teenage girls suing McDonald's for causing their obesity. The documentary itself focuses on Spurlock eating nothing but three McDonalds meals a day for 30 days. When offered the 'Super Size Me' option, he would always take it, but not when it wasn't. When the 30 day trial was over, he had gained 25 pounds and was suffering from depression and liver dysfunction.

The next feature length documentary that Morgan Spurlock worked on was Where in the World is Obama Bin Laden. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. The documentary shows Spurlock's exploration of the fight against terrorism and tries to find Osama Bin Laden, whilst investigating numerous views of terrorism in the US and beyond.

The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special - In 3-D! On Ice! was the next project from Spurlock; a documentary that explored the cultural phenomenon of The Simpsons - the animated series created by Matt Groening.

Spurlock then went on to co-direct Freakonomics, a documentary based on the popular book by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J Dubner.

In 2010, Morgan Spurlock worked alongside Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon, Harry Knowles and Stan Lee, to create a documentary about the Comic-Con convention. The film was entitled Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan's Hope and looked at the stories of the convention's fans.

Spurlock then went on to make The Greatest Move Ever Sold, about product placement, marketing and advertising in the film world. In 30 Days, Spurlock (and others) spends 30 days at a time immersing themselves in a different way of life to their own. The series was split into episodes, with each episode focusing on a different way of life.

Artisanship used to be the foundation of human living, with the manual process of crafting everything from tools to decorative pieces being the most important skills needed amongst people. Since the industrial revolution, however, artisanship has become more in the way of a grand passion for those who practise it, as its importance to society slowly begins to dwindle. Three artisans of the modern age take us into their world of craftsmanship; there are the chefs of San Francisco's rustic Bar Tartine serving up some amazingly unique European dishes, the knife-makers of Bloodroot Blades in Georgia who rely on not getting injured in order to put food on the table, and the crafters of fine cookware at the legendary Nagatani-en in Iga, Japan. Find out how artisanship affects the lives of these skilled individuals, and how the modern world they live in affects their products.

One Direction: This Is Us Review

Good

Filmmaker Spurlock (Super Size Me) is known for his investigative wit, but there's none of that in this on-message doc about the most successful boy band in history. Still, the fans won't be able to get enough of the backstage antics and lively performance clips. And those unfamiliar with One Direction will have fun too. Just don't expect to learn much about these five young men who continually say, "Back when we were little," even though they're still only 19-21 years old.

The filmmakers follow Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis on their world tour, visiting four continents as they play nearly 130 concerts for their hysterical fans, who all seem to be pre-teen girls. As we see them larking around on-stage, in the wings and on their tour bus, we also get their back-story, as they auditioned individually for The X Factor in 2010 and were assembled as a group in a spontaneous decision by Cowell. Their global success is the result of a viral Twitter onslaught, and the fans also get their say on-screen, gushing with their love for these five skinny, mop-haired guys who have serious vocal talents but have yet to prove themselves as musicians.

While the film captures the boys' strong camaraderie, cheeky energy and constant pranks (including silly Jackass-style closing-credits clips), we never really learn much about them. There is no attempt to explore their off-stage identities, what they do in their down-time, their romantic lives or musical inspirations. Some depth is provided in interviews with their parents, who offer emotional insight into how fame has changed their families. Aside from some lively off-handed moments, their interviews feel carefully media-trained, and there's no commentary from anyone outside their inner circle. But they emerge as grounded, likeable young guys who know how lucky they are, so they're making the most of their success in the short time they have at the top.

Movie Stars Too? One Direction's 'This Is Us' To Dominate Box-Office

One Direction Morgan Spurlock

Morgan Spurlock's One Direction documentary This Is Us is expected to top the box office chart following its North American release this weekend. Early ticket sales suggest it will comfortably dispose of Lee Daniels' The Butler and comedy We're The Millers, as well as fellow new release Getaway, with Selena Gomez.

Most analysts suggest This Is Us will take somewhere in the region of $30 million to capitalize on an expected 20% drop in ticket sales for The Butler. Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis's We're The Millers and the Simon Pegg starring World's End - the final movie in the Cornetto trilogy - should take the third and fourth spots.

Over 80,000 fans turned up for the premiere of One Direction's movie in London's Leicester Square last week, pretty much cementing the group's status as the biggest pop act in the world.

One Direction Morgan Spurlock

Morgan Spurlock has carved out a reputation for himself as a documentary master, covering global issues like fast food and politics. So why exactly did he take on the British boy band One Direction for his latest project?

You don’t have to look too far beyond 1D’s incredible fan base to get your answer. Ample, dedicated - sometimes to the point of insanity – and primarily constituted of teenage girls, the British quintet can’t be dismissed as a passing fad. They’re a monumental part of culture, for some, hence Spurlock’s involvement.
