MS MR - How Does It Feel Album Review

New York duo Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow  - otherwise known as Ms Mr - laid considerable groundwork in proving themselves as electro pop professionals with their debut 'Secondhand Rapture'; though lacking in anything that shook the ground of the well-trodden genre, they showed their credentials and potential with memorable tracks that carried themselves live and were, like the title of the debut, rapturous in nature. Excitement for their second LP was subsequently not unfounded.

MS MR - How Does It Feel Album Review

Where 'Secondhand Rapture' set the tone of the duo's debut from the off - the depth and darkness of 'Hurricane', followed by the similarly catchy and soaring 'Bones' - album number two, 'How Does It Feel' sets off on a slightly lacklustre footing; 'Painted' is pleasingly rhythmic and a fine reintroduction to the unwilted vocal of Plapinger, but it doesn't quite hit the ground running with the dark ferocity of their previous work.

Tracks like 'Criminals' and 'No Guilt in Pleasure' show the pair embracing their familiar intensity - creeping tracks that Plapinger traverses with her crisp vocal, with a varied and building production from Hershenow; overlapping vocals, techy undertones and a scintillating pop vibe that propels the tracks along.

Arguably what could be Florida's most fun-packed 3-day event of the year, Big Guava Music Festival makes its debut today (May 2nd 2014) with an impressive line-up headlined by Outkast, Vampire Weekend and Foster The People.

There's a lot of things we like about Florida, and we reckon Big Guava's inaugural event will definitely be one of them. Set against the glorious city backdrop of Tampa, this festival is bound to be the highlight of your year as it arrives at the Florida State Fairgrounds and Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre. As well as  40 awesome bands on 4 different stages, you got your craft beers, your diverse food trucks and your epic fairground rides (which are free, by the way) that will keep you busy in between performances from a line-up that prides itself on its quality over quantity. Having said that, we still think you're going to be spoilt for choice with this lot.

MS MR 2013 promo 1

Some bands are worth getting excited about and, with the festival season well under way, we're keeping an eye out on the most innovative new arrivals - and New York-based duo MS MR certainly fit the criteria.

The alt-pop twosome have already been wowing crowds with their appearances at SXSW back in March and Coachella this month; the latter of which they will be embarking on again soon for the festival's second weekend; and they are due to continue throughout the year. June sees a busy month for Ms Mr (pronounced Miz Mister) with Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee alongside artists such as Rudimental, Ty Segall, Sam Smith and Jake Bugg, before they then hit up Delaware for the equally sensational Firefly Music Festival. 'In a club setting, you can sort of see everyone; you know they're your fans and it's really exciting to see people sing along with you', MS MR's male half Max Hershenow explained in an interview. 'But then on a festival stage, you get to play this way bigger stage than you normally play, there's way more people there than would ever come to your normal show. So we treat it as a chance to win over the crowd.'
