Winning a total of eight awards, Beyonce dominated a MTV Video Music Awards ceremony that was thankfully free of controversy on Sunday night (August 28th).

Both before and throughout the entire evening, Bey was a one-woman headline generator, as she firstly stole the red carpet, along with her daughter Blue Ivy, who was wearing an eye-watering $11,000 dress, before winning in eight of the 11 categories in which she was nominated – including the prestigious Video of the Year prize for track ‘Formation’.

“First of all I'd like to thank my beautiful daughter and my incredible husband for all of their support,” she said during one of her acceptance speeches.

The 34 year old megastar also won Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, Best Editing, Breakthrough Long Form Video for Lemonade. It took her total haul of awards over the years to 24, beating Madonna for most awards given to one artist.

During the ceremony itself, she performed a 15-minute medley of hits from her recent visual album Lemonade. Furthermore, she also aligned herself with the Black Lives Matter movement by bringing the mothers of four unarmed black men killed in the States over recent years (Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and Eric Garner) to the cermeony as part of her entourage.

Rihanna, who performed four separate medleys of her hits throughout the evening, was presented with the Video Vanguard Award – acknowledging a career of dazzling visual artistry – by Drake.

The Canadian rapper – who had congratulated her publicly buy buying an entire billboard earlier this week - promptly stole the headlines by declaring his “love” for RiRi that basically only just stopped short of a full-blown proposal.

And, in what is by now a traditional ‘Kanye doing a Kanye’ moment at every VMAs, the rapper took to the stage for an uninterrupted four-minute speech – and chose to throw shade at his ex Amber Rose, who was in the audience, and pop rival Taylor Swift, who wasn’t.

“I might lose to Beyonce, but I can't be mad, I'm always wishing for Beyonce to win,” he said in praise of his friend, before discussing his controversial ‘Famous’ video and shouting out Amber in the crowd. “I see you Amber! My wife is a G. We came over in the same boat now we’re in the same bed.”

He also made sure to reference the Taylor Swift feud: “Bro, I love all of y’all. That’s why I called her.”
