The 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards took place over the weekend, with some stellar performers and some very well-deserved award recipients. Shawn Mendes was the big winner of the night, taking home four gongs in total and playing his winning single 'There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back' live.

As well as landing Best Song for the third single of his number one second album 'Illuminate', the 19-year-old singer-songwriter also landed Best Artist, Biggest Fans and Best Canadian Act at the award ceremony last night (November 12th 2017), held at the SSE Wembley Arena in London. It appears he's the only nominee of the night to take home multiple awards.

While Shawn landed Best Canadian Act, other regional winners included Louis Tomlinson for Best UK & Ireland Act and Fifth Harmony for Best US Act. Stormzy landed the Worldwide Act award for UK and Ireland, and proved his lyrical dexterity with a live performance of 'Big For Your Boots'.

In the genre categories, the winners were former Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello for Best Pop (who performed an excellent rendition of her infectious hit 'Havana'), David Guetta for Best Electronic, Coldplay for Best Rock and Thirty Seconds To Mars for Best Alternative. But it was Eminem who appeared the most surprised at winning Best Hip Hop.

'Yo, first off... I wanna start off, I'm not really sure how I got this, because I haven't had an album out in a few years', he told the audience during his acceptance speech. It obviously didn't seem to matter. He also performed his new single 'Walk On Water' (from his forthcoming album 'Revival') with Skylar Grey - original vocalist Beyonce not being present at the EMAs.

More winners included Zayn for Best Look, Dua Lipa as Best New Act, Kendrick Lamar for Best Video with 'Humble', Ed Sheeran for Best Live Act, Hailee Steinfeld for Best Push and The Chainsmokers for Best World Stage after their Live from Isle of MTV Malta 2017 event.

U2 got the Global Icon Award, and accepted it with the charisma and hilarity that we've come to expect from the group. Bono sang a little impromptu a cappella version of Stormzy's 'Blinded By Your Grace, Pt. 2', while The Edge jokingly claimed leadership.

'There has to be one leader, one guy who calls the shots, does the heavy lifting, comes up with all the ideas, and it's not an easy gig, I tell ya', the guitarist said, looking at Bono before adding cheekily: 'But I could not have done it without these guys' support.'
