Hollywood A-lister Natalie Portman is set to make her television debut in a new HBO mini-series ‘We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves’, adapted from the Man Booker Prize-shortlisted novel and executive produced by ‘Friends’ co-creator Marta Kauffman.

Outside of a guest spot on ‘The Simpsons’, the new drama series will be the first time that 35 year old Portman has starred in a TV show. Her decision to branch out into the small screen from Hollywood is reflective of a growing trend of major names making the same move.

‘We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves’, a 2013 novel by American author Karen Joy Fowler, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize the following year. Deadline reported on Monday (August 8th) that Kauffman, part of the brain trust behind ‘Friends’, will be assisting on executive production.

Concerning the travails of university student Rosemary Cooke (whom Portman will be portraying) who investigates the disappearance of a “twin sister” at the age of five. The book is being adapted into a script by Christopher Monger, who was nominated for an Emmy for his work on HBO’s TV movie Temple Grandin, which also landed Claire Danes an Emmy and a Golden Globe in 2010.

‘Homeland’ co-creator Gideon Raff has also signed up to be an executive producer, but no broadcast date has yet been announced.

The announcement of this project comes soon after Portman was confirmed to star alongside pop sensation Adele in the singer’s first ever film. The untitled project, news of which emerged over the weekend, will be directed by Xavier Dolan – the Canadian filmmaker who created the music video for her comeback single ‘Hello’ last year.

Portman is also preparing to get behind the camera for the first time, making her directorial debut in an adaptation of Israeli author Amos Oz’s autobiography ‘A Tale of Love and Darkness’.
