Natty's Top 10 Tracks

Natty

Natty took us through 10 of his favourite tracks, some have helped shape his music and some have a personal sentiment, there's a few surprises too!

Neil Young - Down By The River
This song is my earliest musical memory. My father used to play music when he got home, and I used to get lost in the guitars in this song as a child. My favourite Neil Young period was when he recorded with crazy horse. This song is taken from the album he did with them called everybody knows this is nowhere.

Paul Simon - Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes
Another song taken from an album (Graceland) which was regularly played in my house when I was growing up. As a child I always thought this song was so funny... how could someone put diamonds on the bottom of their feet, surely they'd get dirty??

Bob Dylan - Girl From The North Country (Feat. Johnny Cash)
I was trying to think which Johnny Cash tune to put on here, at the same time I was thinking which Bob Dylan track to put on here. So I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. So HERE IS Bob Dylan featuring Johnny Cash, taken from the album Nashville Skyline.

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
One of the only times I can think where a cover is better than the original. I listened to Jimi a lot when I was really young, this was through my parents... and so one of the first albums I went and bought for myself was a greatest hits compilation on tape and this was the first song on the album. I had never heard it before, and I remember playing it over and over again, it must have taken me a week to get to track 2.

Finley Quaye - Your Love Gets Sweeter
I remember when he came out, and was a breath of fresh air from all the Britpop stuff at the time. I overplayed his album Maverick A Strike, none more so than this song. I was a big fan of burning spear and his vocal delivery reminded me of him, but new and from my town (London). He was also the first modern artist I can remember relating to.

Bob Marley - Time Will Tell
Man's a legend, was hard to choose one song, but this one holds a special place in my heart, I guess cos it's a little different from his hits, it don't really have a structure to it, and he mumbles through some of it, but the vibe is all there.

Arcade Fire - Wake Up
I was always a fan of arcade fire, however this was never my favourite song it was always rebellion. However I was lucky enough to perform at Glastonbury last year and when I got there I got the programme and made sure I knew when they were playing. They blew my mind, and on this song I remember the crowd reaching a point of almost euphoria... it was special.

The Streets - Has It Come To This
Reminds me of the days of a teenager when I was carefree, when Mike Skinner came out, I felt like he had a voice I could relate to, that has only happened a couple times in my lifetime, this song will always be my favourite of his, as I remember when I first heard it, on someone's walkman on the way to school.

Junior Byles - Beat Down Babylon
Probably my favourite song of all time, it's a Lee Perry production so it's not quite standard reggae in the production sense. But the combination of Perry's production and the resonating lyric make this song powerful. Whenever I in a situation where I feel uncomfortable, I sing this to myself and it gives me that likkle sumn to drive on.

Santogold - Lights Out
I thought I'd put a modern track as my last choice, I was lucky enough to get the Santogold album quite early because she on the same label as me, and most of it I love, which is more than I can say about most new artists, this song spoke to me the most, it reminds me a little of a modern Joan Armatrading, who I think has the wickedest melodies. Anyway it's a cool tune.

Natty releases his new single 'Bedroom Eyes' on November 10th 2008, check out the video here.
