It’s got to be nerve wracking anchoring your first newscast, heck it’s got to be nerve wracking doing anything scripted on live TV, so pity poor AJ Clemente who let nerves – and a microphone he didn’t realise was on – get the better of him on his first ever evening report for NBC affiliate KFYR.

Deadspin’s been following the plight of poor AJ and had noted that the news reader had seemed nervous before even stepping in front of the cameras, tweeting on his Twitter profile “Alright News Director and GM checking out my tape that we shot yesterday. Seeing if i am ready for anchoring.....Awkward Turtle.......” And following his debut appearance? “That couldn't have gone any worse!”

So what happened in between? Well as AJ was being introduced he wasn’t aware he was on air, and was heard muttering “gay” (which has since been revealed as his attempt to say the name of London Marathon winner Tsegaye Kebede) and then the words “f*cking sh*t.” Oh dear. Clemente didn’t seem to notice what he’d done, though co-anchor Van Tieu did and looked mortified. Come the 10pm newscast AJ had mysteriously disappeared with an apology made by Van Tieu for the earlier language, and it’s since been revealed that the rookie has been let go. Poor guy.

However, he’s remained upbeat about the situation, writing on his Twitter “Rookie mistake. I'm a free agent. Cant help but laugh at myself and stay positive. Wish i didnt trip over my "Freaking Shoes" out of the gate.” Get him back NBC, surely everyone’s allowed a mistake?
