Back in 2004, Jim Carrey would take the lead role in a movie adaptation of the first three books in the Lemony Snicket property, 'A Series Of Unfortunate Events'. Whilst many loved his rendition of the evil Count Olaf and enjoyed the flick, it wasn't the best-received movie, and those interested soon learned that its first big screen outing would also be its last.

Can Neil Patrick Harris Unlock The Secret To Hosting The Oscars?

Neil Patrick Harris Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Neil Patrick Harris is the latest personality entrusted with the difficult, risky and often downright stupid responsibility of hosting the biggest night in movies, the Oscars. Such is the emphasis placed on the host of the Academy Awards, it often shapes the reporting, live-blogging and most of the reaction to the ceremony, with the nominees left as an afterthought.

The Academy have struggled to find an appropriate host in recent years. Seth MacFarlane was smug, James Franco and Anne Hathaway were a disaster, Billy Crystal seemed past it and Ellen DeGeneres was.well, fine. And so Neil Patrick Harris - a notable stage performer with the likeability factor - is next up to try and replicate the likes of Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg and Crystal of yesteryear. That is, to glide effortlessly in-and-out of the ceremony. To be funny when they need to be. To keep things moving.

Neil Patrick Harris's Career Reinvention Continues With Hedwig On Broadway

Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris might be best known as Barney Stinson, the legendary playboy from ‘How I Met Your Mother’, but currently the actor is reinventing himself on Broadway as the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Itch. You might have tales stories of him swearing at an audience member, but that was far from the really story to come out of the show’s opening week. Harris is earning rave reviews in the musical which, whilst being anything but traditional, is currently rocking up a storm on Broadway.

If you’re not familiar with Hedwig and the Angry Itch, some background information is definitely necessary. With music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Itch made its off-Broadway debut in 1998. Taking influence from the 70’s glam rock era and its large than life stars, such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop. The musical tells the story of Hedwig, an East German transsexual who after suffering a botched sex change operation, goes on to front a rock band, named The Angry Itch. The musical’s initial off-Broadway run lasted for 857 performances and it would go on to be staged all over the world, including in London’s West End and even as far afield a Brazil. In 2001 actor John Cameron Mitchell brought Hedwig to the big screen, acting and directing in the film adaptation. For his performance in the lead role Mitchell was nominated for the Golden Globe award for best actor in a musical or comedy.

There'll be How I Met Your Mother fans with knots in their stomach all day today as they wait anxiously for the final episode of the hit CBS sitcom. It has been a long road for the comedy show which by tonight will have run its course over nine seasons. When "HIMYM" debuted back in the fall of 2005, no one could have predicted the consistent success and comedic legacy of such a simple premise: a man in 2030 telling his two kids the tale of how he met their mother.

An entire series told in flashbacks, HIMYM only revealed the identity of "the mother" at the end of series eight, played by Cristin Milioti. Certain signals from her interaction with Ted (Josh Radnor) lead fans to believe that the mother actually is dead in 2030, and that's why the dad is reminiscing with his kids. This rumour was quickly played down by the cast but shows a keenness amongst fans for a "legen-dary" twist to top of their favourite show.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 Review

Very Good

With new writers and directors, this frenetic sequel indulges in silliness with less substance than last time. It's a lot of fun, but also rather forgettable, like the movie's surprisingly unimaginative title (honestly, the sky was literally the limit here). So while we laugh at the constant barrage of jokes and the colourful visual mayhem, there's nothing to engage us on a more satisfying level.

It opens with a recap of the first film, then carries on immediately, as young inventor Flint (voiced by Hader) is thrilled that his idol Chester (Forte), head of super-cool mega-company Live Corp, is put in charge of cleaning up the food storm Flint started. With a secret plan to get his hands on Flint's invention, Chester evacuates everyone from the island community Swallow Falls and offers Flint a job at his headquarters in San Franjose, California. But back home the food has come to life and is threatening to attack the world, so Flint is sent to solve the problem, unofficially accompanied by his pals (Faris' weathergirl, Samberg's surfer dude, Bratt's cameraman and Crews' muscle-cop) and his fisherman dad (Caan).

These characters are so hilariously goofy that we can't help but enjoy the chaos as they return to the island, which has been transformed into a Jurassic Park-style jungle overrun by food-pun creatures like shrimpanzees, tacodiles and watermelephants. The animation is gorgeously detailed, with all kinds of visual gags to match the deranged verbal banter. And the snappy voice cast dive in with gusto. The new characters fit in perfectly: Forte is hilariously slimy, while Schaal (as his talking baboon assistant Barb) steals the show as the only person on-screen who has a story arc.

'Two And A Half Men' Stars Top Rich List - Ashton Kutcher Is The Man

Ashton Kutcher Jon Cryer Neil Patrick Harris

Ashton Kutcher tops a heady list of stars that earn – to be candid – loads and loads of money. The Two and a Half Men star was joined by his co-star on the hit U.S comedy, Jon Cryer as the comedy pair comprise the top two.

Kutcher capitalized – probably not consciously – on Charlie Sheen’s very public breakdown back in 2011. He was pretty much forced to leave the show – either by his employees or by his own actions, and accord – and the former Punk'd star stepped in duly.

"TV's highest-paid actor is laughing all the way to the bank since replacing Sheen on 'Two and a Half Men' after the troubled star's 2011 flameout," said Forbes, adding that Kutcher is also an investor in technology companies.

Whilst seated at the front row wearing 3D glasses and eating a rather large bag of popcorn, both Fey and Peohler butted in on how they thought he could improve the show.

Smurfette (voiced by Katy Perry) becomes their victim as she holds a spell the Naughties desperately need. Set in Paris, as opposed to the first film's location of New York, The Smurfs 2 shows the Smurfs with a little help from their friends set off on a quest to rescue the innocent Smurfette. The film is set half in reality and half in the Smurf's animated world.

Neil Patrick Harris Dances With Mike Tyson And Smooches A Pooch During Tony Awards Hosting Job [Video]

Neil Patrick Harris Mike Tyson

Neil Patrick Harris was on hand to present this year's Tony Awards and the How I Met Your Mother actor was on fine form as he delivered one helluva opening and closing performance, continuing to deliver the gods throughout the length of the show. On hand to help him during his hosting duties was Mike Tyson, Sandy; the dog from the Annie musical, and all but closed the case as to why he should be a future Oscar host with a very well-received hosting job.

Harris' opening medley during the Sunday (June 9) night ceremony saw the actor begin with a 'solo-show' featuring just himself and an acoustic guitar, before the whole thing turned into a marvellously Broadway-esque spectacle. During a tribute to Bring It On, Tyson - who had a one-man show on Broadway last spring - then emerged from behind some cheerleaders and promptly joined NPH in the song-and-dance routine.

That wasn't all for NPH during the night though, as the actor made sure the laughs kept coming with a joke-filled routine. When it came time for him to introduce the cast of A Christmas Story: The Musical, the actor brought in Sandy to help him out. At first things were fine and there was no sexual tension between the two, but once Sandy started kissing Neil's cheek things began to get weird and things started getting French between the two. Understandably, the show caused quite a bit of controversy on Twitter after, with viewers outraged that a dog got to make out with NPH but they didn't. It is a cruel world after all.

Pam MacKinnon Beats Heavyweights To Win Tony For 'Virginia Woolf' [Pictures]

Neil Patrick Harris Tony Awards

Pam MacKinnon beat Broadway heavyweights George C. Wolfe and Barlett Sher to win the Tony Award for best direction on Sunday night (June 9, 2013) for her work on a revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? McKinnon, who narrowly missed out on the same award last year, credited her cast for the big win, "I have been so fortunate, so fortunate to work with these people who challenged me and opened me. And all shows close eventually, and this production will live in my memory for a very long time," she said in her acceptance speech.

MacKinnon's 'Virginia Woolf' was lauded by critics and prove hugely popular with theatregoers over the last year. It also won the Tony award for best revival of a play. She was one of two women to scoop notable awards at the 67th Tony Awards, with Diane Paulus winning for her direction of Pippin. Other big winners included Cyndi Lauper's Kinky Boots winning best musical and Cicely Tyson winning for her role in The Trip To Bountiful.

The televised ceremony was once again hosted by the popular TV actor Neil Patrick Harris, despite ratings dropping 1.4 million over the last four telecasts.

Tony Awards Keep Getting Bigger And Better With Each Year

Neil Patrick Harris Scarlett Johansson Tom Hanks

The Tony awards are approaching! This year’s award show, to be held this Sunday at Radio City Music Hall, is sure to hold a lot of surprises and a lot of amazing performances. Starting with the venue itself – the Tony’s return this year to their rightful home in RCMH after two years at the Beacon Theatre. This of course means a bigger venue, a bigger stage and plenty more space for those clever producers to work their magic. Speaking of space, the bigger venue also offers the chance for the castmembers of several beloved to team up for a number of collaborations. And if there’s anything music theatre fans love unconditionally (besides a good umbrella number,) it’s collaborations.

"You'll see different shows interacting with each other," along with musical numbers from proven hits, among them Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, The Lion King and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, says co-executive producer Ricky Kirshner for USA Today. "In many other worlds, like the music world or TV, everyone is off doing their own thing. But here, they're all friends."

And to add to the hype, audience favorite Neil Patrick Harris returns to host again this year, for what will be his fourth time at the Tonys. Clearly, the producers couldn’t get enough of the witty, multi-talented performer and frankly, who can. Harris, who is a busy father of two, will also be hosting the Emmys later this year. On the occasion, he recently tweeted: Pulling the bi-fecta."But the Tonys have even more to offer this year, especially in the way of nominees. Several Hollywood screen actors have made a more or less successful transition to the stage in recent years and this year’s award show might be honoring some of them, Like Tom Hanks for Nora Ephron's Lucky Guy this Sunday ("Tony loves movie stars when they're game and credible," wrote USA TODAY's Elysa Gardner) and of course, there’s ScarJo. No, sadly the actress got looked over for her part in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, along with the likes of Bette Midler, Alec Baldwin, Jessica Chastain, Katie Holmes and Alan Cumming. However, in the name of sportsmanship, Johansson will take a break from shooting Captain America: Winter Soldier, to stop by and present an award or two. And with such a star-studded cast and producers who have been working for a year to make this happen, it’s almost certain that this year’s Tony Award ceremony will go all out.

Smurfs 2: I'm Too Smurfy - Clip

The Smurfs are back in a brilliant movie sequel that sees them take on evil magician Gargamel for a second time as he makes another attempt at harnessing the blue power of the Smurf people. This time, he has successfully created a group of similar creatures called Naughties, which he has plans to use to lure the impressionable Smurfette to him in order to finally win their potent magic. Aware of the kidnapping, the rest of the Smurfs band together on a rescue mission alongside their human acquaintances Patrick and Grace Winslow who agree to help them get to Smurfette and convince her that she belongs at home.

Right Said Fred, the nineties duo responsible for the number one 1991 hit 'I'm Too Sexy', has got involved in the promotions for the new film, marking the celebrations of Global Smurfs Day on June 22nd 2013, the day after 'The Smurfs 2' is released on the 21st. They have recorded a brand new track called 'I'm Too Smurfy', which isn't too dissimilar from their debut hit as you'd imagine, in a video featuring people in Smurf costumes getting funky and the duo painting their faces blue in honour of the Smurfs' return.

How I Met Your Mother To Be Renewed For Ninth Season

Jason Segel Neil Patrick Harris

How I Met Your Mother, or All The Women I Slept With Before I Met Your Mother, will return for a ninth season, it was announced last night.

There had been some doubts over whether or not the show would return for another season after Jason Segel, who plays Marshall on the show, was reportedly sat on the fence over whether to return or not. However, according to Deadline, Segel decided to stick with the show for at least one more year after a last-minute change of heart during last night's negotiations. Deadline quotes a source as saying that Segel "decided to bail and leave the cast hanging, but he just got turned around today at the last second. The show was literally dead."

Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Barney, was also reportedly undecided whether or not to return to the show, but decided to pledge his time to the HIMYM some weeks earlier, leaving everyone hanging on Segel's word. Now though, it looks as though Christmas may have come early for HIMYM  fans as the show will definitely be returning next year. In fact, executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have even hinted that this season may very well be the last when speaking to E! last month. Bay said: "It's obvious this show is around one central question, so that meeting [of the mother] will be part of the endgame of the show. How much the show will go beyond that, we can't really say one way or the other."

Katy Perry Fails To Come Up With Original Fancy Dress Outfit

Katy Perry John Mayer Skrillex Ellie Goulding Neil Patrick Harris Kristen Stewart

Katy Perry kicked off her birthday festivities this weekend by throwing a predictably lavish costume-party at Los Angeles' Magic Castle nightspot. The singer turns 28 on Thursday (Oct 25, 2012), though hardly made an effort to upstage her famous guests by dressing as a fairly standard vampire.

It was beau John Mayer who put a little more thought into his outfit, opting to arrive as a vampire hunter complete with prosthetic nose and chin, reports US Weekly. Elsewhere, Kristen Stewart snuck into the event fairly unnoticed, while house music DJ Skrillex and girlfriend Ellie Goulding were snapped in some pretty poor looking skeleton outfits. Diane Warren, Johnny Wujek, David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris were also in attendance. The 'How I Met Your Mother' star tweeted a photograph from the event, adding, "Thank you @KatyPerry for having @DavidBurtka and me at your frightfully fun B'day Bash at the @MagicCastle last night."

Earlier in the weekend, Katy had joined Mayer's family and friends to celebrate his 35th birthday at Freemans restaurant on Manhattan's Lower East Side.

The Oscars 2013: Is Seth MacFarlane The Best Man For The Job?

Seth Macfarlane Jason Segel Neil Patrick Harris Mila Kunis

The Oscars is the biggest annual event in western film culture, perhaps matched only by the Cannes Film Festival. Winning an Oscar is a director's, actor's or writer's proudest moment and one that will ensure career longevity and continued success. So, to host the Oscars is a pretty big deal- is Seth Macfarlane, a squat comedy writer whose shows have been censored and even banned in the past the right man for the role? And, if he's not, who may have been a better choice?

Seth MacFarlane is the creative mind behind the animated comedy tour-de-force Family Guy, as well as American Dad and The Cleveland show. He branched his career out further this year writing, directing and starring in the movie “Ted”.

However, MacFarlane had a slight mishap when hosting the Emmys this year, in which he couldn't find the mic. If he has a similar slip-up this year, the award directors may be lamenting not opting for someone else. But who else could step up to the mark? Judging on entertainment value and quality The Muppets would have been an excellent choice, or even the man responsible for bringing them vehemently back to life earlier this year, Jason Segel. Neil Patrick Harris is another all-rounder who would be great for the job, or even Mila Kunis.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3d Christmas Review

Very Good
A warm, squishy centre makes this smutty comedy surprisingly endearing as it bounces from one random set piece to another, by way of a series of outrageous cameos. The sex, drugs and violence get a bit tiring, but the amusing writing and acting keep us laughing.

While stoner Kumar (Penn) is failing to cope with the chaos of his life, now-respectable banker Harold (Cho) is dreading Christmas with his wife's (Garces) extended family, including his terrifying father-in-law Perez (Trejo).

When Kumar drops off a mis-delivered package at Harold's house, their first meeting in six years causes instant chaos. Now they have to team up to replace Perez's prized Christmas tree. This involves scary encounters with a Scarface-style mobster (Koteas), mean-acting tree sellers (RZA and Da'Vone McDonald) and the real Santa (Richard Riehle).

The Smurfs Review

OK
A simplistic approach means that this charming adventure-comedy will only appeal to very young children. While it's lively and enjoyably silly, there's just not enough wit in the story or characters, nor enough skill in the animation.

Life is idyllic for the tiny blue Smurfs, whose village is hidden from view in a European valley. But the evil-but-hapless wizard Gargamel (Azaria) wants to capture their magical essence and, when he finds their village, he chases six of them through a vortex that dumps them into Manhattan. Lost in the city, the Smurfs befriend Patrick (Harris) and his pregnant wife Grace (Mays), whose help they need to both escape Gargamel and regenerate the vortex to get home.

Meanwhile, Patrick's under pressure from his boss (Vergara) to come up with an ad campaign.

Undercover Brother Review

OK

An "Austin Powers"-style blaxploitation spoof, "Undercover Brother" doesn't miss a single joke. Its title sequence alone -- a montage depicting the rise and fall of African-American culture (from Jesse Jackson and James Brown highs to Urkel and Dennis Rodman lows) -- is a laugh riot, in a sad-but-true kind of way.

So is the plot, about The Man, a megalomaniacal Caucasian corporate billionaire, trying to stop a Colin Powell-like black politician (Billy Dee Williams) from running for president ("He's so well-spoken," says a patronizing white news anchor). The Man has him kidnapped and brainwashed into opening a chain of fried chicken joints that will serve "nappy meals" instead. (Politically correct? What's that?)

There's only one man who can stop this evil plan: Undercover Brother, baby!

The Next Best Thing Review

Weak

Homogenized, sterilized and clearly revised by test-audience scoring, "The Next Best Thing" is a disingenuous, emotionally deficient comedy-drama about an earthy yoga teacher who has a baby with a gay friend after a night of booze-fueled accidental amour.

Starring mismatched Madonna and Rupert Everett as the atypical parents who decide to live as a family and raise their son together, there is a core of sincerity in the script that is lead to slaughter by the studio's desire to pat itself on the back for being edgy without losing ticket sales to the lowest common denominator crowd.

The story starts well enough, with our unusual couple commiserating over failed relationships by getting hammered on margaritas one evening, then waking up the next day in a compromising position. Next thing they know, Abbie (Madonna) is knocked up, Robert (Everett) embraces the responsible daddy role, and they move in together -- much to the amazement of friends and family.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle Review

Good

There is a key to good'n'stupid lowbrow comedy that few lowbrow moviemakers understand, and it is this: If you have a thin but serviceable premise upon which to build cheap, vulgar, tasteless, but side-splitting dumb gags, don't slap together some insipid story clogged with clichés to prop it up -- just run with what you've got.

Don't turn your movie into Adam Sandler or Rob Schneider fodder, full of insulting attempts to make audiences genuinely feel for your imbecile heroes and wishy-washy life lessons for your stock characters to learn in the last act. Don't be an "American Pie" and backpedal on your vulgarity at the last minute with a hypocritical-apology "happy" ending.

Instead, be proudly, shamelessly, flippantly stupid, like "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," in which two recent-grad, odd-couple roommates don't discover anything about themselves, they never see any "bigger picture," and they don't grow up at all. They just get stoned out of their gourds on a Friday night, develop the munchies for those famous square hamburgers from the titular eastern-U.S. fast food joint, and spend the rest of the picture having preposterous misadventures while driving all over New Jersey hunting for the nearest franchise location.
