Standing three apples high, the tiny Smurfs live happily and peacefully in their medieval Smurfs village. However, their quiet way of life is threatened by the evil wizard Gargamel and his long-suffering, wise cracking cat Azrael. Gargamel wants to become the most powerful sorcerer in the world and to do that, he needs the Smurfs' essence.
While being chased out of their village, Clumsy Smurf comes across a mysterious portal, which the Smurfs jump through to escape Gargamel. The portal turns out to be linked to Central Park, New York City in the present day. Alienated and disoriented, the Smurfs start looking for a way back to their village, with the help of married couple Patrick and Grace Winslow, before Gargamel finds them.
Patrick and Grace are expecting their first child together. While Grace is overjoyed at starting a family, Patrick, who works for a cosmetics company, is under pressure from his boss, to think up a new ad campaign. As a result, Patrick doesn't think he will be able to cope as a father. But his encounter with the Smurfs may leave him feeling happier about himself, along with a new lease of life.
