Neil Young has said he’s now alright with Donald Trump using his music and he harbours no resentment against the Republican presidential candidate. Last year Trump announced his candidacy by using Young’s ‘Rockin' in the Free World’ at a rally, causing the singer to accuse him of not having the proper permissions to use the track.

But in a new interview with Reuters Young a Bernie Sanders supporter, said: “The fact that I said I was for Bernie Sanders and then he didn't ask me to use 'Rockin' in the Free World' doesn't mean that he can't use it.”

“He actually got a license to use it," Young continued. "I mean, he said he did and I believe him. So I got nothing against him. You know, once the music goes out, everybody can use it for anything. But if the artist who made it is saying you never spoke to them, if that means something to you, you probably will stop playing it. And it meant something to Donald and he stopped.”

When Trump initially used the song last year a spokesperson for Young released a statement saying: "Donald Trump was not authorized to use 'Rockin' in the Free World' in his presidential candidacy announcement. Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for President of the United States of America.”

A representative for Trump later commented: "Through a license agreement with ASCAP, Mr. Trump's campaign paid for and obtained the legal right to use Neil Young's recording of 'Rockin' in the Free World' at today's event.”

"Mr. Trump is a huge fan of Neil Young and his music and will continue to be regardless of Neil's political views.” However Trump soon stopped using the song and later tweeted ‘@Neilyoung’s song, “Rockin’ In The Free World” was just one of 10 songs used as background music. Didn’t love it anyway.’
