Will Smith Launches Defence Of Netflix At Cannes Film Festival

Will Smith Cannes Film Festival Netflix

Will Smith has used his position on the jury of this year’s Cannes Film Festival to launch a passionate defence of streaming giant Netflix, in disagreement with the jury’s president, director Pedro Almodovar.

Smith was part of a four-strong jury that gave a press conference at the annual film festival in the south of France on Wednesday afternoon (May 17th), alongside president Almodovar, another director in the shape of Paolo Sorrentino and Hollywood A-lister Jessica Chastain.

The topic of discussion soon got onto the Netflix revolution, which is disrupting the conventional film industry because it distributes films often without giving them a theatrical release at all. Two of the films touted for the Palme d’Or this year didn’t get a French cinematic release until very recently (Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories), and it has made French distributors upset.

'13 Reasons Why' Was Almost An Anthology Series

Netflix

Whether you love it or hate it, Netflix original series '13 Reasons Why' - based on the Jay Asher-written young adult novel of the same name - is one of the most talked about new television shows of the year so far. Many people thank the series for handling the usually taboo topics of suicide and rape with such a brute force, and praise showrunners for refusing to sugar coat brutal scenes which depict both. Others think that certain scenes in the series should have been shot or presented a little differently, as they may be "triggering" for the viewing public who have a history of struggles with their own mental health. Whatever the case may be, '13 Reasons Why' is a series that splits everybody right down the middle.

It's a show that's very close to the bone with every moment. Depicting scenes of rape and suicide and showing the acts graphically in the series was for those who created the show very important, but it's something that's also allowed the show to be criticised. Many have labelled those behind it as careless in showing such scenes, with professionals in the mental health industry saying the suicide scene in particular could be "triggering" for particular viewers.

Netflix Adding More Warnings To '13 Reasons Why'

Netflix

Released to Netflix over a month ago now, the controversy and discussion surrounding their original series '13 Reasons Why' - based on the young adult novel of the same name by Jay Asher - continues to ramp on. Telling the story of the young Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) who takes her own life and leaves behind a series of cassette tapes for those she says pushed her over the edge, it's an eye-opening piece of television that really does well to capture the various emotions one can go through when navigating the tricky waters of high school life.

Despite that, there are those who aren't very happy with the way in which the series presents some of its more explicit scenes. Netflix

It means you watch things, at home, tag them based on content, rinse, repeat. "The role will offer flexible hours working from home" reads the spec for the dream job, and "would suit those with a passion for films and TV programmes".

"It teaches science in a way that transcends generations," he said, via the NY Times.

Marvel & Netflix Leaves Competitors Out In The Cold With New TV Deal

Netflix Disney

A major deal was struck between online streaming service Netflix and the Disney-owned comic book publishing house Marvel this week, securing the website's rights to four new superhero-based programmes and a mini-series. Described as an “unprecedented deal” and “Marvel‘s most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling,” the deal will see the programmes come to life beginning in 2015, Deadline reported on Thursday, 7 November.

Netflix are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with

A live action series is to begin based upon the heroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, culminating in a mini-series The Defenders, which probably means we'll have a couple of inter-twining story-lines between shows. The four heroes are all to be based in the gritty setting of Hell's Kitchen, New York, and Netflix have initially signed on for at least four, 13 episode series over “multiple years,” beginning in 2015. The introduction of the heroes will then lead to the spin-off mini-series, The Defenders, which according to Netflix/Disney “reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.”

The Future Is... Red? Netflix Bag Major Deal With Weinstein

Harvey Weinstein Bob Weinstein Netflix

Netflix have made yet another bold move – this time with movies – to try and secure monthly payments of £5.99 from content-happy consumers. They’ve put pen to paper with The Weinstein company, securing the rights to stream all of their movies from 2016.

This basically means two things: every film Weinstein releases will end up on Netflix once the movie has a physical release – i.e. DVD – and everything written about Netflix in the next few years will read like paid-for copy. They really are tying up the market.

"The deal that we've just completed with Netflix is probably the biggest deal in the history of the Weinstein Co.," co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein said in a statement. "Together, we are discussing ways to reinvent the pay-TV experience so that the audience can get even more for their money."

Netflix Announces Phenomenally Successful First Quarter With 2 Million New Users

Netflix Kevin Spacey

Netflix stock rose yesterday by a record 24 per cent, which means the company is finally making money again, instead of losing it. Netflix execs attribute the development to the company’s 2 million new subscribers in the last quarter, as well as their recent strategy of focusing on original programming. It looks like the company is finally getting back on its feet after a stock plunge two years ago. Back then, Netflix pushed away customers with the decision to separate its streaming service from its DVD rental service and to raise prices overall. It finally seems like the new strategy is taking effect, as the company announced that it finally topped $1 billion in revenue.

Market ananysts are also giving the service their seal of approval. “Unlike last year, Netflix stock appears to be set for clear sailing now,” Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Vasily Karasyov said in a research note, quoted by The Boston Herald. “What we think is interesting is how the company’s original programming strategy is converging with that of a domestic premium network. … Netflix is racing to ramp up original hours of versatile programming in an effort to build a brand identity with different segments of the market.”

And really, if the company’s first original production, House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey, is anything to go by, that can only spell good things for Netflix users.
