Album Of The Week: The Fourteenth Anniversary Of Sound Of Silver By LCD Soundsystem

LCD Soundsystem

Arriving seemingly fully formed and creatively fertile just after the turn of the century, LCD Soundsystem shifted the world of dance and electronic music with their innovative sound. By the time the band were only a few years old and ready to unleash their debut, eponymous, album on the world back in 2005 they were already a highly regarded band. With the release of their single Daft Punk Is Playing In My House they cemented their ever growing reputation. The album and single were both Grammy nominated.

It didn't take long for LCD Soundsystem to get to work on the follow up to their debut, as well as also providing a 45 minute soundtrack to Nike's Original Run series. Sound Of Silver, their second album, was as well received as it's predecessor and it too became Grammy nominated for best Electronic/Dance album. The band's sophomore album was recorded during 2006 at both Long View Farm in Massachusetts and the DFA Studios in New York. The nine song record, released on March 12th 2007, gave rise to four singles in total, the first of which, North American Scum was released ahead of the album in February.

Primavera Sound Festival - Live Review

Thursday: As you walk the steady incline up to the festival site, chatter sparks from all directions from your fellow festival-goers as you reach the first gate to pass through. Swallowed by the atmosphere, you briefly snap out of your daze and remind yourself that you're surrounded by your friends equally happy to be reunited together.

Primavera Sound Festival - Live Review

Todd Terje is on in 20 minutes at the Bowers & Wilkins Sound System stage. Inhaling from my cigarette I look up and see a small stage to my left but more impressively, the Parc Del Forum at large. It's a beautiful structure which dominates the immediate skyline, towering over the site and its weekend habitants with the Mediterranean ocean stretching out behind it. You're at Primavera Sound - and trust me when I say that it's one of the best festivals you can experience on this side of the Atlantic.

We enter the Sound System Stage and I immediately notice that the speakers are ridiculously crisp. With Terje about to start, we queue up for some incredibly boozy mojitos and caipirinhas and head over to the tent which is already packed at 4pm. He is warmly welcomed onto the stage by a happy-go-lucky crowd as he punches into his much loved disco-revivalism, fiddles with classics and modern tracks alike as well as throwing in a couple of his much beloved hits.

James Murphy Shares 'Remixes Made From Tennis Data'

James Murphy LCD Soundsystem

He was the frontman of one of the most critically well-received bands of the noughties, but James Murphy hasn’t been kicking his heels since the split of LCD Soundsystem. The musician and record label owner has shared a collection of remixes he has made which used data from this year’s US Open tennis competition.

Having teamed up with IBM, who used an algorithm which took a multitude of data from the tournament’s individual matches and produced them into over 400 hours of music, Murphy agreed to remix some of the results and has come up with twelve compositions. It’s something of a labour of love, suffice to say.

James Murphy's Subway Dream: Soundtrack The Underground

LCD Soundsystem James Murphy

James Murphy’s days with LCD Soundsystem are over, but he’s still experimenting with ways to innovate with music. His Subway Symphony project sets out to accompany the daily commute with musical compositions, each unique to a certain subway line.

James MurphyJames Murphy Wants Subway: The Musical

According to a brand new website set up for the purposes of explanation and recruitment of thought, Murphy explains that he’s been “trying for 15 years” to forge a musical partnership between New York’s famous transport system and his brand of electronic music. Currently, he says, “each turnstile emits its own beep, all of which are slightly out of tune with one another, creating a dissonant rubbing-styrofoam-on-glass squeak in stations all around New York City,” on the petition site.

Arcade Fire David Bowie LCD Soundsystem Tina Fey

Arcade Fire are back with a whole heap of new material and album details to share with the ever-loving fans, with the band beginning to slowly leak more and more information about Reflektor over the course of 9 September. First we got the single and video for 'Reflektor,' then the news that Reflektor will be the name of the next album, and most recently we learned that it would be a double album, whilst also being treated to the artwork for the album. Monday was a good day.

Frontman Win Butler will return with his bandmates next month

The Anton Corbijn-directed video for the first track from the album, which features someone with an uncannily similar voice to David Bowie appearing mid-way through, began the torrent of AF album news that flooded newsfeeds across the web yesterday, and soon more and more information about the album was being revealed over the course of the day. The band's online store was updated to feature an album image baring Renaissance sculptor Auguste Rodin's marble imagining of Orpheus and Eurydice, which we asume is the official artwork for the album. The online store where the artwork was found also seemed to reveal that the upcoming fourth release from the Canadian band will be a double album too.

LCD Soundsystem, Manchester Academy, 1st May 2010 Live Review

After spearheading a new generation's take on punk and penning the default floorfiller ('Daft Punk.') and, arguably, the single best track ('All My Friends') of the last ten years, the news that LCD Soundsystem's forthcoming third album is set to be James Murphy's last marks the end of a remarkable period in dance music. From the synth-pop implosions of 'Movement' and 'Yeah' - tonight both catalysts for near-riot - to the tear-jerking likes of 'Someone Great', the notion of anything less than downright astounding is one with which Murphy evidently struggles, and one that marks him out as one of the genre's most vital figures.
