The Back Room

One I am still not too sure on. Having previously reviewed the single Munich for my uni mag and being disappointed with it. First song on the album is the rem/las sounding Lights. Nothing great, not an inspiring first song for a debut album. Munich is actually a better song and would perhaps have been a better choice as the first song on the album. Munich for me sounds very coldplay like and I suppose the more I hear it the more it grows on me. No song on the album jumps out as being spectacular and aw inspiring. Fall for me is the best song on the album and again sounds very coldplayish. Having given my boyfriend the album to listen to he decided it had a slight joy

division sound to it, which is not a bad thing if you are a joy division fan (which my boyfriend is), but I think this could hinder rather than help the band. I just do not feel anything listening to this album. I think it is the kind of album you would need to really listen to over and over again until you finally liked it and I think if I did this then I may appreciate it a bit more. A debut album should grab the listener’s attention and when the album finishes, the listener will just put it straight back to the first track and want to play it again and again, and I just don’t want to do that with this album. I have no doubt however that this album will draw the band fans, my boyfriend being one of them but considering the rakes have released their debut album and hard fi as well I think it will be perhaps difficult for editors to make a impression on the music industry’s fans.
