10 Of The Best Big Budget Film Trailers For 2013

Next year looks set to be a seminal year for movies. Forget sequels and the so-called impending apocalypse; 2013 is all about beginnings as we discover the dubious past of 'The Wizard of Oz' in upcoming sequel 'Oz: The Great and Powerful' and how loveable 'Monsters, Inc.' protagonists Sulley and Mike got qualified to become scarers. Move over 'Breaking Dawn', 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Skyfall', and let's see what 2013 has in store! There have been plenty of dodgy trailers come out for 2013 releases, but here are ten of the trailers we consider worthy of your time! 

 The Great Gatsby

2013 will continue an exceptional year of movie adaptations from some of the greatest pieces of literature ever written (2012 saw Tolstoy's 'Anna Karenina' and is soon to see Dickens' 'Great Expectations') with F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'. A seminal story about the tragedy and corruption hidden under the glamour and sparkle of the 1920's upper-class, the upcoming movie sees Leonardo Dicaprio take on the role of the slightly unhinged Gatsby with Baz Luhrmann ('Moulin Rouge', 'Romeo + Juliet') directing. As you can probably expect from a man like Baz, he injects such colour and emotion into this already thrilling tale that it definitely looks worth a watch even if you already know the ending.

World War Z

Okay, so I know we said 'forget the impending apocalypse' but this is definitely an exception. Here we have the happy family of a respectable UN employee (Brad Pitt) being torn apart by the majority of the earth's population which have turned into angry, blood thirsty zombies and are easily overtaking the major cities of the world. Don't dismiss it as just another zombie flick though because the scale of it is enormous. The trailer shows the family escaping from the undead creatures chasing them; fairly standard zombie horror; but what you don't expect to see is hundreds of animated corpses piling on top of each other to scale a wall several feet high in one of the most organised looking zombie takeovers since 'Land of the Dead'. It gives you one of those rare moments where you can't help but feel doubt for the main character's survival which undoubtedly makes for a truly thrilling ride.

Oz: The Great and Powerful

From the producer of 'Alice in Wonderland' is the prequel to Victor Fleming's 'The Wizard of Oz' - and it's only taken just over half a century to be made! Even so, it looks worth the wait with the opening Kansas scenes featuring the magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) in black and white mimicking the 1939 movie and as soon as we are blown into the land of Oz we are overwhelmed by an explosion of colour. The creatures are cuter, the good witches are sexier and the battles are more deadly turning this much-loved children's tale into an Oscar-worthy journey appropriate for all ages.

Epic

Kids' films are becoming just too appealing these days and we're not ashamed to say that we are looking forward to this stunning and hilarious 20th Century Fox production from the creators of 'Ice Age'. With a star-studded cast featuring the voices of Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farrell, Beyonce and even Steven Tyler, it'll be you dragging your little ones to the cinema to see it, not the other way round. We love to use the word 'epic' to describe anything that looks amazing, but 'Epic' truly is what it says on the tin with its stirring soundtrack and elaborately vibrant animation. It's one of those that really shows how far we've come with computer-generated imagery.

Man of Steel

We just can't help loving these big budget comic action movies that Hollywood seems to have become addicted to. What with 'The Dark Knight Rises', 'Avengers Assemble' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man' being 2012's top three DC/Marvel flicks, it's only appropriate we bring back the biggest star of them all: Superman. This new movie is a reboot of the 80s Superman film series and focuses on the origins of Clark Kent, from when his home planet Krypton was destroyed and his adoption to the moment he made the choice to use his abilities to become a hero. It's going to be great not just for action nuts and comic geeks, but for those who are a sucker for the tear-inducing stuff behind it. 

Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Now 'The Twilight Saga' has ended, the time calls for another teen fantasy to take its place and it is soon to arrive in the shape of this adaptation of Cassandra Clare's first novel of a series. Forget vampires and werewolves, hellish demons and demon slayers are here now giving dark fantasy a fresh new face. With romance and love triangles, sinister fiends and vicious battles, it's definitely got something in it for everyone and, although it would be foolish to suggest it will do as well as 'Twilight', we can't see any reason why this film could flop; after all, romance and frightening demons made 'Buffy' huge 10 years ago.

The Lone Ranger

One has to look at Johnny Depp's filmography and laugh; he's not exactly a man to play a character lacking in charisma and this Disney movie is no exception as he accompanies our protagonist (Armie Hammer) as the Native American Tonto in this legendary Western tale. With modern humour and more eccentric costumes, this upcoming flick dusts off and renovates this old story that originally began on the radio in the 1930s before preceding the 50s TV adaptation. To the uncultured youth out there who know nothing of this masked hero, you are about to discover your new favourite movie character. Yes, we reckon 'The Lone Ranger' will do just as well these days as it has ever done.

Monster's University

Alright, naughties' kids! Remember 'Monsters, Inc.'? Ever wonder how Mike and Sulley came to work at that scaring organization? No? Well, you're going to find out anyway with this upcoming prequel just over ten years later (and incidentally set ten years before). Even if you're not into those kind of movies anymore, we're sure you'll want to see this. They were the kind of monsters you hoped were under your bed and now you'll find out just how these loveable characters graduated at the University of Fear. With the same voice actors and new director Dan Scanlon behind it, this is going to be a blast from the past you'll want to experience.

The third instalment of the 'Iron Man' series will come as a bit of a surprise for some. You might have assumed it would be bigger, better and with a slightly more arrogant Tony Stark but it looks set to be the total opposite. He is stripped back, made vulnerable and forced to be the hero everyone expects him to be without his usual tools. Rather than feeling a little sorry for his latest nemesis, it seems like this time Stark is the weaker opponent when he has to come to terms with the fact that, he may be a genius, but he really has no super powers at all without his formidable iron suit. This looks to be the most nail-bitingly gripping 'Iron Man' movie yet - will the Marvel hero even live to see a fourth film?

A Good Day To Die Hard

Old Brucey may be approaching his sixties, but that doesn't mean he can't still kick ass. The only problem is, we keep having to wait longer and longer for the next instalment of the 'Die Hard' franchise! Although many will argue that it won't ever get as good as the original movie, we can't help but still feel excited for the next one - the action looks just as intense as ever and Bruce Willis' character John McClane's one-liners look to be just as funny. Unless he refuses to say the legendary line, 'Yippee kai yay, m*****f*****', we can't imagine this one becoming a flop at the box office.

Starring: Bruce Willis and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

If this isn't enough for you movie addicts out there, there's plenty more to look forward to. To add to the barrage of comic based films being released are 'Thor: The Dark World', the sequel to 2011 movie 'Thor' starring Chris Hemsworth yet again, and 'Sin City: A Dame To Kill For' which follows Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's 'Sin City' both of which are based on the gritty graphic novel series. We even see yet another instalment of the Star Trek franchise in the shape of 'Star Trek: Into Darkness', the sequel to the seminal comedy 'Anchorman' in '... The Legend Continues' and the similarly superb 'Kick-Ass 2' for those of you who like laughing - a lot! 'Stoker' is another movie set to bring a thrill to your year as we see the Oscar winning Nicole Kidman take to the big screen again in another questioning role for this chilling psychological thriller. So then, plenty to come in 2013!
