Starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis, this wildly inventive film is unlike any other film we’ve seen in a long time. This comedy-drama revolves around a Chinese-American immigrant who, while audited by the IRS, makes a connection with a parallel universe and has to become the universe's unlikely hero.

With a mix of comedy, science fiction, martial arts, and fantasy, Everything Everywhere All At Once just blows everything else out of the water for how original and unbelievable it is. The film has gained critical acclaim for its storyline and portrayal of generational trauma and the Asian-American identity.

The film was nominated for 11 categories at the 2023 Oscars.

2.   Women Talking (Nominated for Best Picture)

This American drama film by Sarah Polley is inspired by real-life events and centres around a relatively heavy subject matter. The film, which stars Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, and Frances McDormand tells the story of a religious Manitoba Colony and how the colony's men have been drugging and raping the colony’s women. The film has a 91 percent approval rating on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

3.   All Quiet On The Western Front (Nominated for Best Picture)

Based on a 1929 novel of the same name, this German anti-war film is by director Edward Berger. The movie follows the life of an idealistic German soldier named Paul who, after enlisting in the army, realises the painful realities of war and how difficult it is to survive the war's events.

The movie received particular acclaim for its storytelling, screenplay, and soundtrack. All Quiet On The Western Front has received nine nominations at the Oscars, including those for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature.

4.   The Whale (Brendan Fraser was nominated for Best Actor)

No film was as widely anticipated as The Whale in 2022. The movie, directed by Darren Aronofsky, marks actor Brendan Fraser’s return to the industry and saw the actor taking on his most challenging role yet.

In the film, Fraser plays a morbidly obese English teacher who’s trying to fix his relationship with his estranged teenage daughter. Despite the simple storyline, the film manages to tell the story of the different levels of heartbreak people experience and the representation of father-daughter relationships.

5.   Tár (Nominated for Best Picture)

This psychological drama by Todd Field centres around renowned orchestra conductor Lydia Tár who has been accused of sexual abuse and the subsequent events after it. Despite negative criticism from some film critics, Tár has been nominated for six categories at the Oscars. Lead actress Cate Blanchett was also nominated for Best Actress.
