Evans' Captain America will be joined by the key superheroes: Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).

Other actors from the franchise will also be returning including Sebastian Stan who played Bucky Barnes/Winter Solider in the past two Captain America films. Anthony Mackie, who previously appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will also return as Sam Wilson/Falcon. Two other people will reprise their roles from the Captain America films: Emily Vancamp will return as Sharon Carter/Agent 13 and Frank Gillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones.

Don Cheadle will also star as Jim Rhodes/War Machine, a character who is usually associated with Iron Man.

Some new faces from Avengers: Age of Ultron will also be making an appearance including Paul Bettany as The Vision and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Indeed the majority of the listed actors, with the exception of Stan, appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In addition to the usual suspects, Marvel also announced the casting of other actors as characters we have not previously encountered. Paul Rudd, who plays Ant-Man in the upcoming film, will make a second appearance in Civil War. Chadwick Boseman will appear as T'Challa/Black Panther and William Hurt will play General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross.

Daniel Bruhl will star as the villainous Baron Zemo. Unusually, the announcement did not mention which role he would be playing especially as Bruhl has already confirmed the role he would be playing, according to CinemaBlend. Martin Freeman was the only other actor whose character has yet to be released.

Also included on the release was a plot synopsis for Civil War. The upcoming film will continue on from Avengers: Age of Ultron and will see Captain America in charge of the Avengers team.

"After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain," the synopsis reads.

Filming for the upcoming film has already begun and Captain America: Civil War will be released in cinemas on 19th April 2016 in the UK and on May 6th in the US.
