Barbra Streisand's Genesis Prize honors her legendary career and unwavering advocacy for social justice, commitment to Jewish values, and philanthropic support for humanitarian causes worldwide.

In 2023, The Genesis Prize Foundation recognized Barbara Streisand's and named her the 10th Anniversary Genesis Prize Laureate. This recognition celebrated her artistic brilliance, steadfast dedication to upholding the values of her Jewish heritage, and use of her platform to inspire positive change.

From the dimly lit stages of Greenwich Village to the global spotlight, Streisand's journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to one's values. Her unparalleled achievements in the entertainment industry are only outshone by her profound impact as a humanitarian and advocate for social justice.

Rising from humble beginnings, Streisand's remarkable talent and tenacity propelled her to new heights, shattering glass ceilings and redefining the boundaries of what was possible for women in the arts. Her success, however, was never a mere pursuit of personal glory; it was a way to amplify her voice and champion causes that resonated with her core beliefs.

Genesis Prize: A Recognition of Jewish Values and Humanitarian Work

"I am delighted to be honored by the special 10th Anniversary Genesis Prize and to work with The Genesis Prize Foundation to support organizations that seek to better society and our shared humanity," Streisand stated upon being announced as the laureate in May 2023. "I am very proud of my Jewish heritage and have always been moved by the Jewish tradition of 'tikkun olam,' which is to repair the world. I hope to join and inspire others in their own commitment to build a better world."

Streisand's connection to her Jewish roots runs deep, shaped by her upbringing in an Orthodox household. Through her art, she has brought nuanced portrayals of Jewish life and culture to the global stage, challenging stereotypes and fostering understanding across communities.

Her performance of "Avinu Malkeinu," a traditional Jewish prayer, and her iconic role in Yentl, in which she portrayed a young woman defying gender norms within her religious community, are powerful examples of how she has woven her Jewish heritage into her artistic expression.

“In addition to delighting audiences all over the world for the past six decades with her amazing talents, Barbra has dedicated her time, resources, and passion to numerous important causes, speaking out whenever and wherever she saw injustice,” stated Stan Polovets, The Genesis Prize Foundation CEO and co-founder.

Beyond her artistic endeavors, Streisand has been a steadfast advocate against antisemitism and a tireless supporter of Jewish causes worldwide. In the wake of the tragic events of Oct. 7, 2023, and the ensuing conflict, she used her platform to call for peace and unity, expressing her sorrow and hope for a better future.

"It's sad about what's going on today — people have to live together, even though they're different religions. People are people, it's true. We all want the same thing. We all want love in our hearts. We all want family. We all want to feel secure. I hope for the best because it is heartbreaking what's happening now with the children, the mothers — it doesn't matter what religion they are. This is beyond religion. This is insanity for us not to learn how to live together in peace," she stated on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Streisand's philanthropic endeavors — and her contributions to Israeli universities and cultural institutions — exemplify her commitment to preserving her roots and supporting Jewish communities globally.

However, Streisand's impact extends far beyond her advocacy for Jewish causes. Her foundation has supported thousands of nonprofit organizations, focusing on health, civil liberties, and the arts, reflecting her multifaceted approach to creating positive change.

"Through my foundation, I make many small grants throughout the year, but I usually have one priority area where a majority of the grant-making is focused," Streisand stated in an interview with the Harvard Business Review.

A Career of Unprecedented Achievements

Her dedication to environmental protection, women's health, fighting disinformation, and supporting Ukraine amid ongoing conflict showcases her unwavering commitment to using her platform and resources to tackle some of humanity's most pressing issues.

Streisand's illustrious career is marked by unprecedented achievements and groundbreaking firsts. From her dazzling start, winning two Grammy Awards in 1964 for her debut album, The Barbra Streisand Album, to her Tony nominations for her memorable performances on Broadway, she has consistently captivated audiences with her raw talent and undeniable stage presence.

Her transition to the silver screen was equally remarkable, culminating in her first Oscar win for the movie adaptation of Funny Girl. But Streisand's most significant achievement may have been her role in Yentl, where she became the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major studio film, shattering barriers and inspiring generations of women in the industry.

Streisand's impact transcends accolades and box office success; she has revolutionized the music and film industries, consistently breaking new ground and leading the way for women in directing and production roles. Having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony – places her among an elite group of only 19 entertainers as of 2024, a testament to her unparalleled versatility and talent.

Her legacy is a winning mix of artistic brilliance, social activism, and an unwavering commitment to her values. From the intimate stages of her early days to the global spotlight, she has consistently used her voice to inspire, challenge, and create positive change.

Her journey is a powerful reminder that true greatness is not measured solely by accolades or commercial success, but by the profound impact one can have on the world. Through her art, advocacy, and philanthropic endeavors, Streisand has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry and the world, inspiring future generations to follow their passions, challenge societal norms, and use their platforms to champion the causes that matter most.

In honoring Streisand as The Genesis Prize Foundation’s 10th Anniversary Genesis Prize Laureate, the world celebrates not only her unparalleled artistic achievements but also her unwavering commitment to upholding the timeless values of her Jewish heritage and using her influence to create a better, more just, and more compassionate world for all.
