Colin Trevorrow, the director and co-writer of the summer blockbuster Jurassic World, shared the inspiration for the film’s sequel in a recent podcast. 39-year-old Trevorrow is currently co-writing (along with Derek Connolly) and producing the sequel to Jurassic World. A quotation by Jeff Goldblum’s character, Ian Malcolm, from the 1993 film Jurassic Park is where Trevorrow’s inspiration came from.

“Honestly, the trilogy is articulated in Jurassic Park, it’s all in there,” Trevorrow revealed (via EW). “Jurassic World is all based on Ian Malcolm’s quote [sic]. It’s, ‘You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you knew what you had, you patented it, you packaged it, slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you want to sell it.’ That to me is Jurassic World. That’s why I had all the product placement, that’s what it was.”

The Jurassic World franchise, like the original Jurassic Park movies, is expected to be made into a trilogy. Trevorrow discussed the future of the franchise and further emphasised how the basis of the trilogy is very much rooted in Jurassic Park. Trevorrow also explained how the financial success of Jurassic World (the film made over $1 billion worldwide) has given them a good basis for developing the next film and allowing them to continue with their original vision for the trilogy.

“‘Dinosaurs and man, separated by 65 million years of evolution have been thrown back into the mix together. How can we know what to expect?’” Trevorrow said, using a Sam Neill quotation from the original film. “That’s why it’s exciting that the movie did well, that leaves us a lot of room to run, and it was part of this design, it had a beginning, middle, and end when we wrote the first movie. Now that the movie did well, we get to play that out.”

Trevorrow was keen to stress how the scale of the sequel will not be any bigger than the first Jurassic World. He implied he and Connolly are planning on focusses more on the interaction between humans and the dinosaurs, as we’ve partly seen in Jurassic World with Owen (Chris Pratt) and his trained velociraptors.

“I don’t necessarily mean in scale,” Trevorrow said. “I feel very strongly that it’s not about more dinosaurs or bigger and better dinosaurs. It’s about using this as a starting point for a much larger story about our relationship with these animals, and with animals in general, and the dynamic created by bringing them back to life.”

Furthermore, the sequel will be different in terms of setting. Trevorrow and Connolly are contemplating taking the sequel off the series of islands on which the Jurassic Park trilogy and Jurassic World are set.

“We made the film with the fans very much in mind and I’m not going to forget that,” Trevorrow said of Jurassic World. “But we’ve seen a lot of ‘dinosaurs chasing people around on an island’ movies. And I think you guys and the general audience are going to be down to explore where else we can go.
