Dan Mazer made 'I Give It A Year' because he was bored of romantic comedies.
The 'Borat' screenwriter has revealed he wanted to surprise the public with his directorial debut and give a fresh perspective on marital comedies by telling the story of an ill-matched couple falling out of love and turning to better-suited alternatives.
Speaking at the London premiere of 'I Give It A Year' last Thursday night (24.01.13), Dan exclusively told BANG Showbiz: ''I don't know whether the public are bored of traditional romantic comedies, but I definitely am! I've been bitten once too often; it's utterly predictable, has three laughs in it and you know from beginning to end exactly what's going to happen.
''I wanted to make a film that slightly reacted to that and subverted that and a film that was actually true about romance and relationships that felt authentic and something I could relate to.''
The writer-turned-director - who is a long-time friend and collaborator of Sacha Baron Cohen - said he knew Rose Byrne was perfect for the part of uptight high-flyer Nat the second he saw her stellar performance in hit comedy 'Bridesmaids'.
He explained: ''I was in the middle of writing this when I saw 'Bridesmaids' and I immediately thought, 'You have the incredibly unique combination of beauty and intelligence''. The character that she plays in this is quite a hard character but beneath that she has incredible warmth and kindness and heart, she's a rising a brilliant film star.''
Leading lady Rose was keen to praise the film's cast and crew as well as British production company Working Title, famed for movies such as 'Love Actually' and now 'Les Miserables'.
She said: ''We just laughed a lot, the people were fantastic. Stephen Merchant would just make me laugh constantly he was hysterical. It was a lot of fun.
''It was great to be part of a Working Title film, I'm a huge fan of their body of work they're really the most iconic British producing company, so it was really exciting to be part of that.''
The film's stars Simon Baker, Stephen Merchant and Rafe Spall also walked the red carpet in Leicester Square.
