The multi-award winning White House comedy Veep is to move production from Maryland to California to benefit from better tax incentives. The show starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a U.S vice president is one of four shows selected to receive tax credits for relocated to the west coast.

The panel has earmarked $6.5 million in filming credits to Veep, the commission's executive director Amy Lemisch said in a statement on Tuesday.

HBO spokesman Quentin Schaffer said: "We're exploring our options right now"

Veep has been shooting in Maryland for four years, principally in Columbia, Baltimore and Sykesville. It received $13.9 million in tax credits in its first three seasons, though the state had not earmarked any further credits toward the next season, said Karen Bell Hood of Maryland's Department of Business and Economic Development.

Last year, California tripled its tax incentives fund for television and film production to $330 million.

Ryan Murphy's horror anthology American Horror Story is expected to begin shooting its fifth season Hotel in California in early July, while VH1's Hindsight, which formerly shot in Atlantic, and ABC's Secrets and Lies, previously shot in North Carolina, are relocating.

The estimated tax credit for Hindsight is $3.9 million, while the credit for Secrets and Lies was $5.9 million.

Created by Armando Iannucci, Veep has been nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy series three years in a row. Its second season won the Writers Guild of America Award for Television Comedy Series and its third season won the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. It is one of only four shows since 2000 - the others being The Office, 30 Rock and Modern Family - to win awards from both the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of America in the same year.
