Jennifer Lawrence Pays Surprise Visit To Montreal Children's Hospital

Jennifer Lawrence Michael Fassbender James McAvoy Nicholas Hoult

Hollywood A-list star Jennifer Lawrence took some time out of her manic filming schedule to visit a children’s hospital in Montreal, Canada and surprise some young patients. Obviously, there were pictures taken of her with the kids and chatting to staff, which is another reminder of why everybody loves J-Law. As if we needed another reason.

The 24 year old Hunger Games star is in the Canadian city filming X-Men: Apocalypse alongside James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and her ex-boyfriend Nicholas Hoult. It’s rumoured to be the last time she stars as Mystique in the franchise before it’s refreshed with new blood next time around.

Dark Places Trailer

Libby Day is a young woman, still permanently scarred from the events of her childhood. As a 7-year-old girl living in Kansas, she witnessed the brutal slaughter of her family, only weeks after discovering a bizarre interest of her brother Ben's and evidence that he practiced Satanism. After she accused Ben, then 16-years-old, of murder, he was locked up for life and her name went down in crime history. It left her with money from a charitable fund and royalities from her autobiography, but now in her early 30s she's completely broke. Soon though she meets Lyle Wirth, a member of a ghoulish group named The Kill Club, full of crime obsessed wannabe detectives who enjoy solving vicious crimes. They offer her money to help them solve what really happened when she was a girl, because hardly any of them believe her brother was the perpetrator of the massacre. She's sure it was him, but now she's forced to return to that time in her life and remember exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the tragedy - and that gets even more complicated when she finally visits Ben in prison.

Mad Max: Fury Road Review

Extraordinary

Leave it to a veteran to show the young sparks how to do it: it's been 30 years since George Miller last visited his post-apocalyptic hero Max Rockatansky, and now he's back with the best-staged action thriller of the year, a blockbuster that dares to have meaningful themes and complex characters. He also recreates Mad Max as a kind of James Bond franchise with a story that sits alongside the earlier films, not before or after, and an actor who brings a new energy to the role.

In a desert wasteland where people trade water and oil to survive, Max (Tom Hardy) is a loner haunted by the death of his family. Then he's captured by a gang from the Citadel, a towering rock city run by the tyrant Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), who has positioned himself as a god who keeps his enslaved people on a short leash. On a mission to collect oil, Joe's top imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) veers her war-rig off into the desert. So Joe sends a gang after her. Leading the charge is the gung-ho Nux (Nicholas Hoult), who uses Max, strapped to his car like a grille ornament, as a blood-bag to supply energy. But after a series of clashes involving three other gangs of desert marauders, Max and Nux end up on board Furiosa's rig, in which she is hoping to smuggle Joe's five young wives to safety.

The plot itself is fairly blunt, which means that the film requires very little dialogue (Max doesn't speak at all for the first 45 minutes, mainly because his houth is actually bolted shut). Even so, Miller fills every shot with telling details that strengthen the characters and provide insight into what they are doing, building more intriguing relationships with suspicious glances than most filmmakers do with endless conversation.

X-men: Days Of Future Past Review

Excellent

Continuing to be the most original and resonant of the Marvel superhero franchises, the X-men return in the capable hands of director Bryan Singer, who again stirs plenty of meaty subtext beneath the thrilling action. He also has one of the best casts imaginable, including Oscar winners, cinema royalty, rising stars and matinee idols.

Best of all, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) returns to the fold after two less-than-thrilling solo adventures. He's at the centre of everything here, as Professor X and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) ask Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) to send Wolverine's consciousness back 50 years to 1973. His mission is to prevent Dr Trask (Peter Dinklage) from inventing mutant-hunting robots, because they will go out of control and cause a present-day dystopia in which mutants and anyone who sympathises with them are killed. But Wolverine's biggest task will be to get the then-feuding Professor X and Magneto (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) to work together to keep renegade mutant Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) from making everything worse.

Thankfully, Simon Kinberg's script doesn't worry too much about the whole time-travel thing, shrugging off dubious logic by keeping the focus on the characters. And there are a lot of people to keep an eye on, which makes the film sometimes feel a bit crowded and leaves some characters barely on-screen at all (blink and you'll miss Anna Paquin's Rogue). The best newbie is Evan Peters' Quicksilver, who gets the film's most entertaining sequence as he races around tweaking an action sequence frame by frame. Other set-pieces are grippingly darker, and some don't quite make sense (why does Magneto feel the need to levitate an entire stadium?).

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Trailer

The mutants of the world are quickly dwindling in their numbers, tearing each other apart until they are almost wiped out. Two of the wisest X-Men of the universe, Charles Xavier and Magneto, must now join forces despite their hostile relationship to go back in time and fix the world so that their kind can survive the horrors of their ravaged future. The duo enlist Wolverine to help them on their mission; a mutant whose healing powers make him the only one strong enough to travel in time. He must find the impulsive fools that are Xavier and Magneto as much younger mutants and warn them of what their actions will do for their future, while on the way attempt to save the life of an important political figure. Will the X-Men succeed in changing their future? Or are there some things in the past that can never be changed?
