X-Men: Apocalypse Review

Very Good

This closing chapter of the First Class trilogy falls into the same trap as The Last Stand, the final part in the original X-Men trilogy: it shifts the focus from character detail and social commentary into a more standard effects-heavy action brawl. There's still a lot of strong character detail, and a big story that can't help but be entertaining. But it's impossible to escape the feeling that the film's scale is far bigger than it needed to be.

It's now 1983, and while Professor X (James McAvoy) works with Hank (Nicholas Hoult) to set up his school for young mutants, his old friend and nemesis Erik (Michael Fassbender) has started a family in a rural corner of Poland. But he can't hide forever. Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) is roaming the world helping mutants where she can, meeting the teleporting Kurt (Kodi Smit-McPhee) in Berlin before heading to Cairo. There, CIA operative Moira (Rose Byrne) has just uncovered a bizarre underground cult that has revived the ancient super-mutant Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), who immediately sets out on a quest to cleanse the planet and start over again. He needs four assistants, and the question is which of the X-Men will go over to the dark side.

This is the third comic book movie in a row about superheroes fighting each other, after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War. And it's similarly enormous (all three films are around two-and-a-half hours long), with mammoth battles that don't quite make logical sense but are compelling enough that the audience goes with them. This film has a bit more emotional depth, including back-stories that have been developed with unusual complexity. But some characters fall through the cracks.

Lawrence looks more than a little miffed, while Hoult appears to be gently lowering her hand, according the the News. The photo isn’t really clear.

Brits Take The Lead! 2013 Sees America Ship In Overseas Talent

Idris Elba Henry Cavill Chiwetel Ejiofor Benedict Cumberbatch Daniel Day Lewis Andrew Garfield Tom Hiddleston Dominic West Ben Barnes Max Irons Nicholas Hoult Aaron Johnson

It used to be that British actors were traditionally cast by Hollywood filmmakers as villains; in endless kids' Disney flicks we'd hear exaggeratedly posh English voices coming out of the most evil of witches ('Snow White'), scary giant octopuses ('The Little Mermaid') and murderous lions ('The Lion King'), and even the creators of some of the biggest blockbusters such as 'Die Hard' and 'The Silence Of The Lambs' scoured the UK for the perfect sinister accent.

However, now the Brits are playing the good guys with a surge of overseas talent showcasing their well-practised foreign accents over the past few years - even one of the most American flicks of 2012, Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln' cast London born Daniel Day-Lewis as the iconic US President. Here are our four biggest British stars that have been making their mark in Hollywood with seminal roles over the past and coming months.

Jennifer Lawrence Dating Nicholas Hoult Again? Never Say Never

Jennifer Lawrence Nicholas Hoult

The blogs are all atwitter with news of Jennifer Lawrence dating her ex-boyfriend Nicholas Hould again. The reason? The two shared what People magazine described as “a cozy dinner”. Naturally, with the couple’s split just three months ago, still fresh in everyone’s mind, people started wondering. "They arrived together," an observer told the magazine. Which tells us nothing really, since people, who have dinner together, tend to arrive together as well. But everyone is hoping that the couple have rekindled their romance, if only so that we get to hear some more adorable gushing from Lawrence on her beau. Last summer, Lawrence said of her then-boyfriend: "[My boyfriend] is honestly my best friend, and hopefully I'm his best friend, too. He's my favorite person and he makes me laugh harder than anybody."

How cute is that? Of course, it's probably too early to start speculating about a reunion, but still. Now would be the perfect time for a lovey-dovey reunion as well, since both the Hunger Games star and the Warm Bodies actor are filming the X-Men sequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past. Lots of time, on set, together, in really tight outfits… do you see where we’re going with this? But anyway, nothing is official just yet and sometimes, a dinner date is just a dinner date.

Jennifer Lawrence, West Hollywood
Rekindling old romances is definitely in this season.

Jack The Giant Slayer: Move Along Folks, Nothing To See Here

Nicholas Hoult

There is an obvious trend of fairytales being converted into high budget action flicks of late (to varying levels of success) and Jack the Giant Slayer is just the latest production to ride the wave.

Is it any good though? Well, no, if you believe the reviews. The LA Times’ Kenneth Turan goes as far as to say that “Despite some good acting, there may never have been a Jack tale that delivers so little pleasure for so many dollars.” Harsh. At the same time, though, it is obvious where this flick suffers. You can add all of the shiny CGI and high action you like to a film, but without an interesting script it’s still just hanging tinsel on a pile of trash.

The Huff Post’s Mike Ryan, on the other hand, has something to say in defense of the film. Namely, hold on past the first 25 minutes and it actually turns into an enjoyable flick: “Once the beanstalk goes up, the story tightens and becomes something that could be described as enjoyable.” Well, it’s not much, but that’s all we have.

Warm Bodies Predicted For Box Office Win This Weekend

Nicholas Hoult Teresa Palmer

Who else knows movies better than one of the guys behind IMDB? Probably very few people, so as the LA Times reports, when Keith Simonton, the managing editor for the website, predicts that Warm Bodies will take the box office top spot over the weekend in North America, he's probably worth listening to.

Simonton predicts that Warm Bodies, starring Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer, will take $17.4 million from Friday to Sunday this weekend. He compared it to Zombieland, another zombie flick that has a similar premise of the teenage-love-story-zombie-horror genre, which scored $24.7 million. "People had heard that Bill Murray was in [Zombieland], and that added a cool factor," he said. "Something like 'Warm Bodies' doesn't have that cachet, so I'm already bumping the per-screen average down."

Warm Bodies goes against all the zombie movie conventions by making one of the zombies have emotion. Nicholos Hoult plays 'R', a member of the un-dead who falls for a living girl (Palmer), whose boyfriend he's just killed. Reviews so far are middling, with some die-hard fans of the genre not enjoying its parodying style. But, out just in time for Valentines day should swing in its favour, as a love story with a twist.

Hot Tickets! US Movie Releases: Nicholas Hoult Stars In Zom Com 'Warm Bodies,' Stellar Cast Can't Save 'Stand Up Guys,' Another Stallone Doozy In 'Bullet To The Head'

Nicholas Hoult Teresa Palmer John Malkovich Christopher Walken Al Pacino Alan Arkin Sylvester Stallone

We’re going to ease in to our round-up of this week’s movie releases, by starting with the ‘above average’ and moving gently down the quality scale, to the truly awful. We already know, by the fact that Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is riding high at the top of the box office, that there is literally no accounting for taste, so we will no longer try to influence your movie-going habits. We will simply present you with the facts and leave you to queue for your popcorn.

First up, Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer star in Warm Bodies, a zombie comedy that gets the laughs from Hoult’s slightly unusual zombie character who decides to save a living human, rather than chomp down on her arteries for a nice snack. Of course, that living human happens to be an attractive young female, in the form of Teresa Palmer (who, for the record, looks a lot like Kristen Stewart in this movie). John Malkovich also stars in this zom-com, which is a little bit ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ (pretending to be a zombie? Been there, done that) but looks like an entertaining way to pass a couple of hours.

Richard Roper of Chicago Sun-Times came up trumps with the most enthusiastic review so far, writing “I kinda love this movie. "Warm Bodies" is a well-paced, nicely directed, post-apocalyptic love story with a terrific sense of humor and the, um, guts to be unabashedly romantic and unapologetically optimistic.”

'Bloodless Romance And Bloodless Carnage': Warm Bodies Leaves Reviewers Cold

Nicholas Hoult Teresa Palmer

In many respects, zombies are inherently funny. They're slow moving, grunting, dishevilled creatures of the undead whom no one seems to be able to get away from despite their laggard  advancement. Sure, in great quantities they're pretty scary, and if they bite you you're doomed, but otherwise the zombie horror is a genre primed for parody and pastiche. Warm Bodies is one of these parodies and as reviews roll in, it appears it could have been done a little better.

Despite generally positive ratings from critics, plenty of faults were found. Starring Nicolous Hoult (About a Boy, Skins) and Teresa Palmer (Bedtime stories), as well as an appearance from John Malcovich, it's not doing terribly in terms of cast, but the general premise seems to have let it down somewhat. As the Village Voice points out, the novel the movie was based on is an incredibly loose adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. The general premise sounds a little off, but the Village Voice were most annoyed by how tame it was describing the central romance as 'bloodless' adding that "Nobody kisses anyone else until it becomes clear that both parties have pulses, and everyone gets to keep all their limbs."

Variety were a little more favourable considers it a zombie movie made for girls (and hitting cinemas in time for Valentine's Day, that judgement fits). "The pic keeps the horror quotient in check," they write, "while focusing on the femme-friendly comedy and romance angles, offsetting the plentiful moments of suspense with cutesy scenes." The Hollywood Reporter didn't hate it, and understood the angle it was going for, and while they enjoyed Hoult's performance, the most complimentary they could be about it as a whole was saying: "At its best, Warm Bodies paints a dead zone's slow awakening with gloomy giddiness, brimming with visual humor."

Jennifer Lawrence And Nicholas Hoult Break Up!

Jennifer Lawrence Nicholas Hoult

Say it ain't so! Jennifer Lawrence and boyfriend Nicholas Hoult have called time on their relationship it seems, with US Weekly reporting earlier today that the two had in fact split.

The pair have been together for the past two years, having met one another on the set for the film X Men: First Class (coincidentally playing lovers in the film). Despite a positively gushing statement from Lawrence in last December's (12) Elle magazine in regards to her love life, things have taken a turn for the worse in their relationship it seems and have called it a day.

Although US Weekly offers no details on why the former flames have ended things, but as of yet no-one from either camp Lawrence or camp Hoult have come forward and refuted the claims. In last month's Elle, cover-star Lawrence was questioned on her relationship and said quite reassuringly:"[My boyfriend] is honestly my best friend, and hopefully I’m his best friend too. He’s my favorite person to be around and makes me laugh harder than anybody.”

Fairytales On The Big Screen, Jack The Giant Slayer Trailer Unveiled

Ewan McGregor Nicholas Hoult Bryan Singer

It's been three years in the making and has changed form quite a bit in that time, but finally the trailer for Jack the Giant Slayer has been released, and it looks amazing!

With an incredible array of British stars including Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor and Eleanor Tomlinson (who you may not know yet, but will soon) appearing in the film, the very foundations of the movie already seem promising. Plus, Bryan Singer is directing which is another great sign. He's the man behind X-Men, X2 and X-Men: First Class, so when it comes to heroes and villains he knows what he's doing. Fundamentally a re-envisioning of the classic fairytale, Jack and the Bean Stalk has plenty of those polemical characters, and the giants do look truly grotesque.

Singer spoke to Total Film earlier this year and said: "It's a very traditional fairytale, probably the most traditional thing I've ever done. But it'll also be a fun twist on the notion of how these tales are told," he said. "There might be some scary moments. The giants do like to eat people. There's a little of that. They're giants, you know? It's what they do!"

Jennifer Lawrence Dishes The Dirt On Relationships, Living With Her Parents And Being 'Obese'

Jennifer Lawrence Nicholas Hoult

By far one of Hollywood's brightest shining rising stars, Jennifer Lawrence seems as down to Earth as can be and really opened up during a recent interview with Elle magazine. In it, she spoke about her universally praised film roles, her relationship with British actor Nicholas Hoult and most absurdly of all, on being considered "obese."

"In Hollywood, I'm obese," she told the magazine in the interview earlier this week. Lawrence is nobodies idea of obese, unless you're utterly mad because the girl has a body to die for, but she went on to say that her choice not to be a stick-thin actress like so many others is down to her dedication as a role model for young people, "I'm never going to starve myself for a part. I don't want little girls to be like, 'Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I'm going to skip dinner."

Lawrence goes on to talk about living with her parent too, as the thought of living alone in a large Beverley Hills mansion rather than being surrounded by her family just seemed strange and unappealing to the young actress, as well as discussing her "best friend" and boyfriend Nicholas Hoult, "He's my favorite person to be around and makes me laugh harder than anybody."

Britain Is Kinder To Celebrities Than LA: Why Jennifer Lawrence Loves London

Jennifer Lawrence Nicholas Hoult

Jennifer Lawrence reckons that Britain is kinder to celebrities than the USA. The Hunger Games star clearly hasn’t been following the recent phone hacking scandal, or the subsequent Leveson inquiry and we have a feeling that the likes of Hugh Grant and Charlotte Church might disagree with her, after having their phones hacked by the British press, but there you have it. Apparently, Jennifer can’t even go shopping at her local Wholefoods store in Los Angeles, after the press discovered that that was where she went shopping for healthy snacks.

Jennifer Lawrence’s boyfriend is Nicholas Hoult, so she has been spending a fair bit of time in Blighty recently with the British actor and has a soft spot for London, saying “I love London. All these perfect little pubs in every corner where everyone is fine. The more I travel, the more I get tired of LA when I get back. I’ve been to maybe six restaurants in the four years I’ve lived there.”

Talking of her relationship with Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence is the latest cover star of Vogue in the UK and told the style magazine that her new beau isn’t too fussed over fashion. She explains that he’s not usually bothered about what she’s wearing and what’s more, he has no idea of how good looking he is. “Oh, he really doesn't care," she said. "Like he'll sometimes wear these white tennis shoes with jeans, then tuck his pants into his socks. He has absolutely no idea how good-looking he is. I think a lot of women and men hate me because of that.” Yeah, that and your own good looks. And the fame. And the money…

Jack The Giant Slayer Trailer

Jack is a young farmhand working for the King. One day, he comes across small bean-like objects, which are described as 'holy relics' from a faraway land. The relics, however, are full of dark magic and could change the world if placed in the wrong hands. Jack is entrusted with them, on the condition that he doesn't lose them or get them wet. Jack is puzzled but accepts the relics anyway.

That night, a terrible storm rages. Jack has left the bean shaped objects on a surface in his hut, where rain falls on them through a hole in the ceiling. At first, nothing happens; then Jack looks on in horror as a beanstalk grows from the ground under his hut. The beanstalk connects the human world to a world where giants roam.

Jack lands himself in trouble when a giant kidnaps the beautiful Princess Isabelle. The King sends some of his best men up the beanstalk with Jack to rescue Isabelle.
