Rock singer Nick Cave’s teenage son has died in hospital after falling from the top of chalk cliffs near Brighton.

15 year old Arthur Cave was airlifted to Royal Sussex county hospital on Tuesday (July 14th) after walkers found him with life-threatening injuries at around 6pm at the foot of a 60ft. drop below the Ovingdean Gap. Those who found him attempted to administer first aid and quickly rang for emergency services.

However, he died of his injuries later that evening. Cave and his wife Susie released a short public statement on Wednesday paying tribute to Arthur, who leaves behind his twin brother Earl. It read: “Our son Arthur died on Tuesday evening. He was our beautiful, happy, loving boy. We ask that we be given the privacy our family needs to grieve at this difficult time.”

The circumstances of the accident are not being viewed as suspicious. A spokesperson for Sussex Police released a statement saying: “A 15 year old boy who was found with life-threatening injuries on the underpass of Ovingdean Gap, having fallen from the cliff above, has sadly died in hospital on Tuesday. He later died there of his injuries. The death is being dealt with by the coroner’s office.”

Arthur’s year 10 schoolmates assembled at the scene of the accident to leave floral and written tributes, which Cave and his wife are believed to have seen and read. The Guardian reports that they briefly attended the scene on Wednesday, speaking with their son’s friends.

57 year old Cave is best known as the lead singer of the critically acclaimed Australian alternative rock group Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, which has released 15 albums since forming in 1983. He was also a part of The Birthday Party before that, and released two albums as Grinderman in 2007 and 2010.
