The 5th Wave Review

Very Good

Also based on the first in a trilogy of post-apocalyptic teen novels, this thriller feels like it could be a worthy successor to The Hunger Games saga, with its smart story and strong characters. The premise feels remarkably grounded, as it follows a feisty teen while her world is turned upside down by an alien invasion. And Chloe Grace Moretz gives one of her most complex performances to date as a quick, flawed heroine.

The title refers to the stages of invasion, as unseen aliens quietly take over the planet. And then not so quietly. Most of humanity has been killed by disasters or disease, with the survivors waiting for whatever the next wave of attack might be. Before this, Cassie (Moretz) was a normal 16-year-old with a crush on the cute Ben (Nick Robinson). Now she's running for her life, trying to rescue her little brother Sam (Zackary Arthur), who has been whisked to safety by the gung-ho Colonel Vosch (Liev Schreiber) and his military resistance. Along the way, she meets farm boy Evan (Alex Roe), whom she reluctantly trusts mainly because he's such a hunk. Meanwhile, Ben finds himself in Sam's unit in the newly formed child's army Vosch is training to hunt down aliens who have taken human form.

Director Blakeson keeps the pace brisk without rushing past important details. This makes what happens feel unusually believable, and it also allows the actors to add personal touches to their performances. Moretz finds Cassie's innate courage and quick physicality, but nicely balances it with her impulsive decisions and adolescent self-doubt. As in most of these movies, she has to be in a love triangle, but her scenes with both Robinson and Roe offer something a bit more intriguing, mainly because both actors have surprises up their sleeves. There's also a fourth person in this relationship in the form of Maika Monroe's tough-girl fighter Ringer, perhaps the most intriguing character on-screen.

'The Kings Of Summer' Brilliantly Entertaining Red Band Trailer Now Here [Trailer]

Nick Robinson Nick Offerman Gabriel Basso Moises Arias Jordan Vogt-Roberts

Jordan Vogt-Roberts' new coming-of-age comedy drama 'The Kings of Summer' is set to make its cinematic debut imminently after an exceptional reception at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

In celebration of its nearing release date, a brand new red band trailer has hit the web with snapshots of some of the movie's most hilarious moments. After some tit-for-tat verbal humiliation between Joe Toy (Nick Robinson) and his father Frank (Nick Offerman), with the pair of them failing completely to understand each other and their predicaments, Joe decides to make his own way in life and runs away with his best friend Patrick Keenan (Gabriel Basso), who is having an equally tough time with his overbearing folks, and a strange boy they just met called Biaggio (Moises Arias). They plan out their new house which they will build entirely from scratch and have much fun finding their own entertainment (such as the tribal dance/ pipe-banging scene that featured in the initial teaser trailer). Unfortunately, being impulsive teenage boys, they didn't quite comprehend just how much they'd have to contend with and even the simplest thing of general wildlife becomes a terrifying obstacle.

'The Kings of Summer' is due out in selected US cities on May 31st 2013. With a hilarious cast talented in sarcasm and a myriad of teenage antics invoking nostalgia in everyone, it's sure to be one of the most memorable independent films of the summer and a true triumph to Chris Galletta as his screenplay debut.

Joe Toy is struggling under the weight of his over-bearing single father Frank; his rules, curfews and sanctions are suffocating him as his independence is slowly quashed day by day during his summer vacation. In a bid for the first taste of freedom in his life, he grabs his best friend Patrick Keenan, an equally suppressed teenage boy, and takes him on a trip to the woods where he shows him where they will build their own house free from any kind of parental strain. Tagging along is a weird and unpredictable kid named Biaggio who they're too afraid to reject, and who thinks up an idea of a kidnapping to explain their dramatic runaway to their worried parents. While they struggle to live off the land and take care of themselves, their friendships are tested as they discover just how difficult it is to be independent, parents or no parents.

Joe Toy is not so different from your average hormone-ravaged adolescent boy; he, like many teenagers, struggles with his limits of independence as his father Frank, who brings Joe up alone, insists on keeping control over Joe's life as he tries in vain to gain a little freedom. In a bid for autonomy and liberation, he enlists the help of his best friend Patrick Keenan and their peculiar acquaintance Biaggio to help him build a home in the woods during their summer vacation and thus become entirely self-sufficient, living off the land. However, tempers rise and friendships are put to the test as they discover that true independence is almost impossible as even the kind of family you choose becomes just as restricting as the one you were born with.
