Nicki Minaj is one of hip-hop's leading ladies, but in her own opinion it is quite astonishing she is at the forefront of the music genre.

The 31 year-old star has been doing press tours as of late to promote her newest single 'Pills N Potions," which is garnering a large amount of interest as it is much more heartfelt and melodic track, rather than her her usual synth pop/aggressive rap style.

But the change may be something Minaj was forced to do, she was recently interviewed by her hometown radio station, New York's 'The Breakfast Club Power 105.1, and described hip-hop as "not female friendly."

The radio DJ's asked Nicki to shed some light on why other female artists in the same genre haven't achieved the level of commercial success she has.

"I can't really speak for anybody's grind or how pop culture receives people," she said. "I'm not surprised because even when I was grinding and putting out tapes and stuff like that, it was hard for me. It takes a lot of work. It doesn't just happen overnight. It's not a female-friendly business. Hip Hop is not female friendly at all."

Instead of targeting a certain individual in a diss track, 'Pill N Potions' tells the very personal story of Nicki still being in love with someone, and how hard it was to go through the bad times alone.

"I've come across a lot of people who I've given amazing opportunities to, who continue to bite the hand that fed them, and I always give people enough rope to hang themselves with," she said of her verses. "In general, I think in life, I try to be super fair to everyone so when you cross me it's just like, 'Really? Hmmm... OK.' It is what it is. I still love."
