Kiss And (Almost) Make Up At Nirvana Hall Of Fame Induction

Nirvana Kiss

Thursday’a Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was an emotional event in more ways than one. Not only was the late Kurt Cobain inducted into the hall of fame (with former bandmates Dave Grohl and Chris Novoselik present), but the members of Kiss, all four of them, found it an appropriate time to finally kiss and make up, pun intended.

Nirvana
The induction aptly coincided with the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death.

According to the NY Daily News, it was Gene Simmons, who initiated the touching moment during his speech. “I’m just here to say a few kind words about the four knuckleheads who made this,” said Gene Simmons, as the three others looked on, happily. At least it seemed so at the time. You’d think the feud between Simmons and Paul Stanley, and the other original players, Ace Frehley and Peter Kriss would end there, right? Wrong. It was a nice first step, but the band still didn’t perform together, which means there’s probably some more making up to do.

Kurt Cobain Death Conspiracy Theorist, Richard Lee, Files Lawsuit Against Seattle Police

Journalist Richard Lee, a Kurt Cobain death conspiracy theorist, has opened a lawsuit against the Seattle police. Lee alleges recently published photographs taken at the scene of Cobain's death should have been made public before now.

Nirvana
The anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death has prompted a investigation into the case.

Lee believes Cobain was murdered although the general belief is that he committed suicide. There were numerous incidents throughout 1994 which suggested he was suicidal and he was hospitalised on more than one occasion. Lee's foundation for his belief in Cobain's murder rests on the Nirvana frontman's use of a shotgun and the three days between his death and the discovery of the body.

Two Decades Later, Seattle Police Are (Not) Re-Opening The Kurt Cobain Case

Nirvana Kurt Cobain

The morbid fascination with celebrity deaths seems never ending. This week it’s Kurt Cobain’s turn under the spotlight – one more time – as rumors that Seattle police are reopening the Nirvana frontman’s murder case started circulating online on Thursday. They’re not, for all you conspiracy theorists out there. They most definitely aren’t, as the Washington Post reports, but read on to find out how the whole thing started.

Nirvana Kurt Cobain

News that Kurt Cobain’s former roommate is flogging the deceased Nirvana frontman’s belongings on the internet has temporarily brought Kurt’s name back from the dead. Cobain committed suicide in 1994, but enthusiasm for the singer’s music has never waned, while Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind remains one of the best-selling albums of all time.

nirvana kurt cobain Kurt was just 27 when he commited suicide

Kurt was the quintessential grunge rocker, sadly he struggled with depression and heroin addiction and was found dead at his Lake Washington home on April 8, 1994, with an apparent gun shot wound to the head. Cobain left a suicide note in which he famously claimed ‘It’s better to burn out that to fade away’, lyrics taken from Neil Young’s 1979 song Hey Hey, My My. Cobain was just 27 when he died, joining the infamous ’27 Club’, a group of musicians who have all died at the age of 27. Other members of this sad group include Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and Jim Morrison.

For Nirvana, their first single came in 1988 with the release of 'Love Buzz,' with their induction coming as "no surprise" to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO Joel Peresman or many other people for that matter.

Jay-Z raps the lyrics of late rocker Kurt Cobain on new track 'Holy Grail,' from his forthcoming new album 'Magna Carta Holy Grail'. The hip-hop superstar was granted permission to use words from Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit by Cobain's widow Courtney Love, who is notoriously cautious of requests to sample the band's work.

Jay-Z sings the lines "and we all just / entertainers / and we're stupid / and contagious," as the hook on Holy Grail, a collaboration with Justin Timberlake. Though not verbatim, the words are similar to those on Smells Like Teen Spirit, when Cobain sings, "'Here we are now / entertain us / I feel stupid and contagious." Elsewhere on the track, Jay-Z references the late Nirvana frontman by name, rapping, "Momma please just get my bail / I know nobody to blame / Kurt Cobain / I did it to myself."

Jay-Z Is Using 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Lyrics On New Album, Says Courtney Love

Jay Z Courtney Love Kurt Cobain Nirvana

Jay-Z announced last weekend that he is going to release his new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, as part of a special service with smartphone manufacturers Samsung. He has so far been relatively quiet in revealing examples of what we can hear on the album, but one person who hasn't been so quiet is Courtney Love, who told the Huffington Post this week that the rapper will be using some lyrics written by her late husband on the release.

Love said that the rapper is intending on using some of Kurt Cobain's lyrics from Nirvana's most famous song, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' on an unspecified track. She told the Huff. Post, "I'm letting Jay-Z use lyrics-- [daughter] Frances would freak [if she knew this]. Jay-Z's huge and we're friends. I mean we're not besties or anything.... They [used the lyrics] without asking, which is kind of nervy but the business side has been taken care of so it's fine."

Magna Carta Holy Grail will be released on July 4 via an app available exclusively on Samsung Galaxy phones. Samsung purchased one million advance copies of the album for its customers to give away with the app, a move which could have secured Jay with the number one spot on album immediately. Unfortunately for Jay however, it has since confirmed that those 'sales' will not count towards the Billboard 200 chart, as is the case in the UK and other charts across the globe.

The Landmark Performance That Never Was: How PJ Harvey Nearly Fronted Nirvana

PJ Harvey Nirvana Dave Grohl Foo Fighters

PJ Harvey very nearly collaborated with the remaining members of Nirvana, for a special one-off performance of the band’s song ‘Milk It,’ earlier this year. In an interview with NME, Dave Grohl, now the frontman of Foo Fighters, revealed that he asked the British songwriter to perform with him and Krist Novoselic because she was of Kurt Cobain’s favourite songwriters. Kurt was the singer and guitarist of Nirvana until he took his own life in 1994.

The performance in question would have taken place on February 19, Grohl revealed. He was planning for a concert with the Sound City Players and realised that Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty weren’t going to be able to make it, so started to think about alternative additions to the evening’s performance. “Someone came up with the idea of doing a Nirvana song with PJ Harvey. Kurt loved her and we love her and we thought, 'Yeah, what would we do?' I said: 'God, what if we were to do 'Milk It' from 'In Utero' with Polly singing?' We all looked at each other like, 'Woah, that would be amazing…' and then she couldn't do it!"

It’s been 19 years since Kurt’s death and the remaining members of Nirvana have never performed any of the band’s songs in public, since. “It's sacred ground,” said Grohl. If we were ever to do something like that it would have to be right because you want to pay tribute. There's a reason Foo Fighters don't do Nirvana songs, and it's a good reason." If the PJ Harvey collaboration had come off, it would have been a momentous occasion for fans of the band.

12-12-12 Benefit Concert Raises Over $30 Million For Hurricane Relief

Rolling Stones Bruce Springsteen Nirvana Kristen Stewart Adam Sandler Blake Lively

The 12-12-12 Concert, which took place on, yes, the 12th this month, was a rousing success, with over 20 million viewers tuning in nation-wide and $30 million raised, according to Nielsen estimates.

The lineup was an eclectic mix of big names in the business like Bruce Springsteen, Nirvana along with Sir Paul McCartney (that was definitely a curious collaboration), Alicia Keys and Eric Clapton, among others. It featured a number of New York natives, who urged the nation to open their pockets and donate to the relief effort. The show also featured a number of guest appearances by celebrities, representing their native areas, like Kristen Stewart, Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon and Blake Lively among others.

The event wasn’t without its controversy either, as a comment made by Mick Jagger sparked a mini storm (no pun intended) among Twitter users. The line, which went “When it rains in London, you’ve got to come in and help us.” quickly made the rounds and managed to enrage some of the more sensitive viewers, but it seemed to be more of a foot-in-mouth moment, rather than carry any malicious intent on Jagger’s part. Regardless of that little moment though, the event seems to have been a success all round, with Americans all over the country pitching in to rebuild one of the nation’s most prominent cities.

Nirvana Fronted By Paul McCartney - What Did Courtney Love Think?

Courtney Love Sir Paul McCartney Nirvana Dave Grohl

So, Paul McCartney joined the surviving members of Nirvana to perform a one off gig in aid of the victims of Hurricane Sandy, which was hardly going to provoke a hostile reception right? I mean one of the 20th century's greatest musicians fronting a generation defining group that haven't performed together in over twenty years in the aid of charity, who could complain at that? Courtney Love (of course), thats who.

Kurt Cobain's widow is said to have been "not amused" following the gig, but was much more critical of the band (Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear) than she was of McCartney, especially so of bassist Novoselic, who retired from music following the parting of the band upon Cobain's death. She wrote on Facebook afterward, "paul better get earmuffs for th bassplaying is all... Uh it was bad."

Love was also critical of the idea that the performance was  being cited as a reunion at all, telling TMZ that her late husband was the "heart" of the band, and that Nirvana had in fact called it quits before his suicide, although, funnily enough, this had never come up before. She told the gossip site, "The only person that would be … with kurt as of june 94 … and would still be … was [second guitarist] pat [Smear]," before adding, "they broke UP."

Standing Out From The Crowd: Katie Holmes And Blake Lively Stuning At Sandy Relief Concert 12-12-12

Katie Holmes Blake Lively Tom Cruise Rolling Stones Sir Paul McCartney Nirvana Bruce Springsteen

Katie Holmes and Blake Lively were in danger of stealing the limelight from the host of rockers performing at last night’s Concert For Sandy Relief at New York’s Madison Square Garden (December 12, 2012). Even Kanye West turning up in a skirt couldn’t upstage these two glamour-pusses, who were all a-shimmer for the big event.

Holmes may be a recent divorcee at 33 and Lively a newlywed at 25, but the pair of them looked equally happy last night. Katie chose to wear a figure-hugging purple dress with velvet panels, designed by Tom Ford, suiting her own classic style down to the ground (well, down to the knees anyway). US Magazine have pictured Tom Cruise’s ex looking relaxed at the charity concert, which featured The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney & Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen, among others and she wore her hair loose, neatly accessorised with black pointy heels. Blake went for a studded red leather mini-dress, designed by Isabel Marant and nude caged ankle boots, designed by Christian Louboutin.

Blake, who recently married Ryan Reynolds, has been keeping a low profile of late, though she and her new husband had been spotted enjoying a break in Paris at the start of this month. Both Katie and Blake were looking stunning last night; they almost put some of the musicians to shame when it came to grabbing the limelight.

Sandy Benefit Concert Highlights: Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney And Nirvana Hit The Mark

Sir Paul McCartney Alicia Keys Kanye West Nirvana Dave Grohl Kurt Cobain Bruce Springsteen Rolling Stones

Yesterday’s Concert For Sandy Relief (December 12, 2012) turned into a year’s worth of rock and pop headlines, all rolled into one. Not only were some of the coolest kids on the block performing (Alicia Keys, we’re looking at you), but they were doing it in tabloid-seeking style (Kanye West in a skirt, anyone?). However, it was the older statesmen of rock and roll that really grabbed the nations’ attention last night.

First up, Sir Paul McCartney, formerly of The Beatles and now, apparently… of Nirvana? Well, maybe not quite. But Sir Paul did perform with the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, playing a new song that they had composed together, entitled ‘Cut Me Some Slack.’ It was part of a wider set performed by McCartney and allayed the fears of devout Nirvana fans, concerned that they would be performing a set of Nirvana covers, with McCartney taking the place of the late Kurt Cobain.

The Rolling Stones made an impressive, if brief, performance, playing ‘You Got Me Rocking’ and ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ before leaving the Madison Square Garden gathered crowd wanting more. Mick Jagger’s seemingly unending reserves of energy put many of the other performers to shame, even if he didn’t have to exert quite the same degree of stamina that he has had to at the band’s recent 2 hour 50th anniversary shows. “Homestate hero” Bruce Springsteen was described by New York Times as “the master of the socially conscious message that’s also a full-tilt rock concert” and last night, he didn’t disappoint. The evening ended on a rousing note, with Alicia Keys joined by a stage full of firefighters to sing ‘Empire State Of Mind Part II,’ with its appropriate chorus of “This is New York… concrete jungle where dreams are made of.”

Paul McCartney Fronts Nirvana Reunion At Hurricane Benefit

Sir Paul McCartney Nirvana Dave Grohl

If you’ve wondered what it would be like to have Paul McCartney perform with Nirvana – and we’re sure you have in some darker moments – well, now that exists.

McCartney took the stage at last night’s benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy to perform a brand new collaboration. While the ex-Beatle hardly fits within anyone’s definition of “grunge”, the song was actually nothing short of a solid hard rock tune, riffs and all. It will, of course, be available on iTunes soon, but the rumours of McCartney taking Kurt Cobain’s spot more permanently and the end times dawning upon Earth, seem highly exaggerated at this point.

The new song, Cut Me Some Slack, has more of a bluesy feel than the hard grunge sound that Nirvana is known for. McCartney, out of character, played lead guitar, instead of sticking to his usual spot as bassist. Both him, Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic seemed to really get into the performance. The collab got mixed reactions from fans – there were tweets ranging from “I met Kurt Cobain once and I'm pretty sure he said "no, whatever happens, not Macca” to “I never would have though Paul McCartney (at 70!!!) would sound that good with NIRVANA!”

Bruce Springsteen And The Rolling Stones Among The Lineup Of Sandy Benefit Concert

Rolling Stones Jon Bon Jovi Bruce Springsteen Jon Stewart Adam Sandler Alicia Keys The Who Sir Paul McCartney Nirvana Mick Jagger

A slew of New York natives, as well as plenty of Brits performed at last night’s 12-12-12 benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy, which ripped through the city in October.

Bruce Springsteen, a Jersey man himself, took the stage first with Land of Hope and Dreams followed by the evocative Wrecking Ball and the very aptly themed My City in Ruins, all of which was meant to address the rebuilding process and the NY spirit. The musician spoke fondly of his native New Jersey, mentioning its inclusiveness. “I pray that this chraracteristic remains the same” Springsteen went on to say, before going into Born to Run, for which he was joined on stage by Jon Bon Jovi, another Jersey resident.

The concert was definitely geared towards classic rock fans – a smart marketing decision, since this is also the demographic with the highest disposable income. Besides a number of to-the-bone New Yorkers, like Jon Stewart, Adam Sandler and Alicia Keys, it also featured an unexpectedly high number of appearances by British musicians – The Who and Sir Paul McCartney among others. The ex-Beatle joined the surviving members of Nirvana onstage for a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Has The World Gone Mad? Is Sir Paul McCartney Really Replacing Kurt Cobain In Nirvana?

Sir Paul McCartney Nirvana Kurt Cobain Courtney Love

Is Sir Paul McCartney really going to replace Kurt Cobain in a newly-reformed Nirvana?

Well, if you cast a glace over the online chatter today, you would certainly think that. It’s not strictly true, of course (is that a storm brewing, or the sound of the entire world breathing a massive sigh of relief?) but Paul McCartney will be joining the surviving members of Nirvana for a charity concert tonight (December 12, 2012) in aid of the victims of Hurricane Sandy. We just hope that someone has sat Courtney Love down to explain the situation properly, before she gets angry, or confused, or both of those things.

According to The Sun, Sir Paul McCartney rang up Dave Grohl (who used to be Nirvana’s drummer before he promoted himself to the front of the stage with new band Foo Fighters), who asked if the former Beatle would like to “jam with some mates,” without really explaining who those mates might be. Sir Paul McCartney got together with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Nirvana’s occasional fourth member Pat Smear and suggested that they just make something up. McCartney admits to not really knowing who the other guys were and when they started saying how good it was to be back together, he says “somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.” Somehow, we’re struggling with the image of Macca singing ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ so we’re going to keep our fingers crossed they’ll be doing Beatles covers instead.

J Mascis, Dinosaur Jr Frontman Was Asked To Join Nirvana – Twice!

Dinosaur Jr. J Mascis Kurt Cobain Nirvana Mudhoney Built To Spill

Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis has revealed that Kurt Cobain asked him to join Nirvana, on more than one occasion. In an article with Spin magazine, Mascis reveals that the first time he was asked to join the legendary grunge band back in 1989. “Nirvana was playing Maxwell's and after the show I was talking to Kurt and [Sonic Youth's] Thurston Moore… Kurt said, 'you should join my band.'” He added that he thought Kurt was sick of the guitarist at the time, Jason Everman, though he recalls that he “didn’t think much about it.”

The second time that he was asked to join the band, was around the time of the release of ‘Sliver,’ when there was talk of him playing drums for the 1990 single, though he thinks that Mudhoney’s Dan Peters did the honors instead. It wasn’t just Nirvana that tried to poach J Mascis, either. Built To Spill’s Doug Martsch reportedly wanted the formidable guitarist in his own ensemble as well. He told Spin “When we signed to Warner Brothers [in 1995], I didn't have a band," Martsch says. "One idea I had was to play all the instruments myself and just get a drummer. I ended up doing that and scrapping it, but another idea was to have J play drums on the record. He was willing to do it, but then I kinda decided it wouldn't be a good idea.”

It seems as though Mascis’ evident confidence and experience may have been a little too much for Martsch to work with, as he explains “I felt like I needed to work with someone who I could really work with a little more, you know? I didn't know how we could work together, I had no idea and I didn't want to get started on something like that. I didn't want to be telling J Mascis what to play on drums. I wanted to find someone I felt comfortable really expressing myself with. But there was a moment where he was almost the drummer on that record.”

After hinting that the Foo Fighters will be going on hiatus at last weekend's Global Citizen Festival in New York, Dave Grohl has confirmed this on the band's Facebook page in a warm letter to fans.

At Saturday's concert Dave Grohl said that he wanted to make the most of their performance as he was unsure when they would be performing together again. In his letter on Facebook he said “Yes... I was serious. I'm not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again”. But, do not despair! He followed this up by saying “I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it's good to just... put it back in the garage for a while...” He also referred to the band as his 'family', his 'life' and his 'world'.

Grohl also encouraged fans that they would all see more of his work very soon, as the hiatus allows him to work on his latest project, a documentary called 'Sound City' which he referred to as the “most important project [he's] ever worked on.”

Nirvana, Nevermind: 20th Anniversary Edition Album Review

It's difficult to argue with the fuss that's being made about Nevermind's 20th anniversary. This is after all a groundbreaking album for a number of reasons. It reintroduced loud guitars to the charts, was pivotal to the success of Grunge, dictated the musical landscape of the early 90's (which was struggling to escape the mire of 80's pop), and introduced a mainstream audience to the tragic figure of Kurt Cobain.

Nirvana Manager: Courtney Love Led To Band's Downfall

Nirvana Courtney Love Kurt Cobain Saturday Night Live

Danny Goldberg, former manager of Nirvana, has said Courtney Love was a toxic presence among the band.

Love married Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain in 1992, with the couple having a daughter, Frances Bean, before Cobain's suicide in 1994.

And according to Goldberg, Love had an instrumental role in Cobain's struggles with heroin and acted as the frontman's "mouthpiece".

"Courtney's very presence was a metaphor for the end of one era in the band's life and the beginning of another," he writes in his upcoming book Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock And Roll Business.

Goldberg discusses an incident in which he delivered money to the couple, believing they were about to spend it on heroin.

"The weekend in January 1992 that Nirvana did Saturday Night Live for the first time was a turning point that put into focus the heroin problem that was to haunt Kurt for the rest of his life.

"Courtney called me at home the morning the show aired," Goldberg continues in an excerpt, reproduced at Spinner.com, "and asked me to get Kurt $5,000 (£2,800) in cash so they could do some 'shopping'.

"I felt pretty uncomfortable as I delivered the package of $100 (£56) bills to her [Love] at the hotel," he explains.

"Abruptly, the dark cloud of drug excess had entered the band's life. I was confronted by the baroque facade of lies and the awful glassy-eyed deadness that regular heroin use provides."

Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock and Roll Business is released in the US on Thursday September 18th.
