We all know Stephen Hawking is a genius who can give us answers on some of the universe’s most mind-boggling questions. So what better person is there to ask about the most troubling and puzzling question of recent times, what is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction?

Stephen Hawking may have just given million of One Directioners hope.

Professor Hawking was speaking at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday night via a 3D hologram projection from his actual location at Cambridge University in the U.K. During the talk Hawking answered questions from his daughter, journalist Lucy Hawking and physicist Paul Davies, as well as audience members at the Opera house.

After nearly a month of social media silence, former One Direction member Zayn Malik has tweeted for the first time since his departure from the group in the middle of the South East Asian leg of their world tour.

“Wanna say thanks to everyone that's been there for me over the last few weeks,” he wrote. “Love you all.. you know who you are x.” Nothing too profound or revelatory, but it’s a sign that the 22 year old is ready to re-engage with the world and, perhaps, some word of solo material.

Morgan Spurlock, the documentary filmmaker who directed One Direction's This Is Us movie, has claimed that Harry Styles will be next to leave the band. Speaking to TMZ.com, the Supersize Me star admitted he didn't think the group would stay together for much longer.

Zayn Malik has made his first public appearance since leaving One Direction, at the fifth Annual Asian Awards. The 22 year old debut a new shaved hairstyle at the event, where he was accompanied by his mother Trisha Malik.

Zayn was accompanied to the event by his mother, Trisha.

The 22-year-old was presented with the award for Outstanding Contribution to Music at the ceremony, which was held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. Accepting the award Zayn referenced his time in the million selling pop group and thanked his former bandmates.

We knew it would happen one day, but One Direction have officially picked up the pieces and moved on since saying goodbye to Zayn Malik last month. In news which might be upsetting to some, the group have just released their first official photo as a four piece, showing life will go on for the boyband after Zayn's departure.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper Liam Payne said, “We’re gutted that Zayn chose to leave but now after a few performances as a four piece, we’re feeling confident and are determined to carry on stronger than ever.”

First they were afraid, they were petrified, kept thinking they could never live without him by their side... but One Direction seem to have moved on from Zayn Malik’s departure fairly quickly. So says Niall Horan, in a series of tweets which revealed that the band is already planning a return to the studio.

One Direction are now going in separate directions.

Zayn Malik’s plans of leading the life of a normal 22 year old might have hit bit of a roadblock, as it appears the former One Directioner is about to embark on a solo career. Zayn sent One Direction fans into a meltdown on Wednesday when he announced his departure from the boyband, after previously being signed off the group’s current tour due to stress.

In announcing his departure from the band Malik said in a statement, "My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart.”

Simon Cowell has praised Dermot O'Leary after the presenter announced he would no longer be hosting The X-Factor. 41-year-old Leary announced he would be leaving the show on Friday (27th March). The presenter, who has hosted the show for eight years since taking over from Kate Thornton in 2007, informed fans of his decision on Twitter.

Billy Zane poked fun at One Direction fans whilst appearing in a skit for Funny or Die. The Titanic actor feigned surprise at the amount of tweets which seemingly referred to him, expressing some displeasure at the misspelling of 'Zane'. The tweets were, of course, about the departure of Zayn Malik from One Direction but, taken out of context, the over reaction of 1D's fans is even more amusing.

One Direction star Louis Tomlinson is single again, after splitting from his girlfriend of nearly four years Eleanor Calder. The couple’s split was confirmed after tabloids published pictures claiming to be of the 23 year old and a ‘mystery brunette’ over the weekend.

The boys all together late last year.

"Louis and Eleanor split up two weeks ago," a rep for the band confirmed to E! News. "They have not announced this as they wanted some privacy during this time.”

The future of the world’s biggest boyband One Direction could be in doubt, following a difficult week for the group which culminated in Zayn Malik leaving their 'On The Road Again' tour due to stress. The singer, who is engaged to Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards, had been accused of cheating on his fiancée last week, while the band were on tour in Asia.

Zayn’s departure from the tour was announced on Thursday by the band’s publicist Simon Jones who delivered the news on Twitter writing, "1D statement: Zayn has been signed off with stress and is flying back to the UK to recuperate. The band wish him well and will continue with their performances in Manila and Jakarta.” The 22 year old has since been spotted arriving home to Heathrow.

Zayn Malik is leaving One Direction's tour and heading back to the UK. 22-year-old Malik has been signed off with stress. Malik will miss the next three tour dates in Manila and Jakarta. He is hoping to return to perform with the rest of the band in Johannesburg on 28th March for the last four concerts on their world tour. Simon Jones, One Direction's publicist, released a short statement on Twitter. "1D statement: Zayn has been signed off with stress and is flying back to the UK to recuperate. The band wish him well and will continue with their performances in Manila and Jakarta," Jones wrote on Twitter.

American hitmaker Meghan Trainor has confirmed a match made in pop songwriting heaven by revealing that she’s written a song with One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles.

The 21 year old dropped by BBC Radio 1 on Tuesday morning and told host Nick Grimshaw that the “cute acoustic love” song is called ‘Someday Maybe’. Grimshaw was asking Trainor about an earlier interview with ‘The Sun’ in which she indicated that the Styles writing hook-up had happened.

One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson is tired of ‘The Voice’ continually slagging off ‘The X Factor’. Ahead of the BBC’s flagship talent contest making its reappearance this Saturday (January 10th), the boyband member suggested that there wasn’t even a contest between the two programmes.

The 23 year old star aired his grievances on Twitter, where he vented: “Is bad mouthing The X Factor the only way The Voice knows how to promo their show? #everyyear.” Later, he said: "it's like Accrington Stanley trying to compete with Real Madrid.”

Amid rumours from some quarters that a split was on the horizon, global chart conquerors One Direction have dismissed such negativity and confirmed that the band will apparently record a fifth album.

Speaking at the inaugural BBC Music Awards, band member Niall Horan said when asked about the possibility of a new full-length record: "Yes, there will be.” There seemed to be some cross-communication, though, because his colleague Liam Payne had just confusingly commented “we're just so happy that this album (i.e. Four) has gone really well for us and it's kind of given us somewhere else to go with music now, if we do happen to do another one..."

Hello, this is your resident One Direction correspondent speaking. The Brit wonder made a splash at last night’s American Music Awards with a double win. Not only did they give a pretty brill performance of Night Changes, they also won three whole awards – for Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock band and Favorite Pop/Rock Album. Their appearance in full force and good health served to quash some rumours from earlier in the week, when Zayn Malik reportedly went down with a stomach flu.

The rumours of course, were that his illness was less flu-like and more... substance related. Basically, people were saying that 21-year-old Malik was on drugs. All those rumours (or most of them anyway) were quashed last night. Not only did he appear to be in good health, if a little on the quiet side during interviews, Malik also performed two solos on Night Changes. And yes, his voice sounded just fine throughout.

And they’re back! By them, I obviously mean Pink Floyd and by back, I mean their new album , The Endless River, has topped the UK chart, making this the first Pink Floyd album in ten years to reach the milestone.

The One Direction cultural juggernaut rampages onwards, mercilessly laying waste to every record and sales landmark in its path. The band’s second movie One Direction: Where We Are – The Concert Film has smashed global box office records during its one weekend only run in cinemas worldwide.

An unprecedented 3,400 screens in 78 countries screened the new movie, which was filmed at the San Siro stadium in Milan during the Italian section of their world tour in June this year. It may sound like an unlikely pairing, but One Direction and Danny Devito will soon be sharing the screen together, as the actor and director has filmed a cameo for the band’s next music video. In 'Steal My Girl’ which was shot in Los Angeles last Friday (October 10th), DeVito stars opposite Harry and the gang as the music video's director.

One Direction have announced their new single, 'Steal My Girl', ahead of the release of their new album, 'Four'. The single is due to be released on the radio for the first time on the 29th September, 2014, and it is currently available for pre-order in the UK and Ireland. It will receive a full release on Sunday 12th October, 2014.

It's officially One Direction season! The UK superstars have a thing for a releasing an album every year around November, and they're keeping up the tradition in 2014. One Direction's fourth album, Four, will be out November 17 2014.

However, for some reason they opted against the way cooler looking IV and settled for the ugly Four … but then again, they’re One Direction. They can basically do whatever they want. The guys teased the album announcement early Monday morning and followed it up with a video update spilling the news, but they also gave something a little extra, too. In an effort to apparently break the entire Internet, One Direction also decided to debut Four’s lead single, ‘Fireproof’ - and give it away completely for free, too.

As reported by Billboard, the long-standing almanac of impressive achievements is adding the musicians for various reasons, Metallica's being they are the first band to play a gig on all seven continents. They completed this feat this year in fact, when they treated some unusual guests to a show in Antarcita. James Hetfield spoke about the gig in a statement: "Seven continents in one year with Antarctica being the gig of a lifetime, yes, 120 scientists and competition winners. Not to mention the 300 very curious penguins!"

It looks as if One Direction are now officially Britain’s biggest pop act, after the boy band were named 2013’s best selling artist. The band’s success was topped off in November when their third album, Midnight Memories, became the year’s biggest selling album worldwide.

The band’s phenomenal sales were the foundations for a healthy year for the British music industry, with their third album Midnight Memories becoming the biggest seller around the world, shifting four million copies in only six weeks.

One Direction’s Zayn Malik has attracted enormous criticism on Twitter after simply writing ‘#FreePalestine’ on his page.

The tweet has received well over 150,000 retweets and favourites since he wrote it, but he has received a great deal of abuse from fans in Israel and from those sympathising with Israelis. Many fans even urged Zayn to “kill yourself” in response.

All good things must come to an end someday, which means that One Direction is eventually breaking up. Sorry, I know, it’s a sore subject for me, too. They’ve consistently put out great pop albums year after year, so it’s not like they should break up, but being in a boy band with a bunch of other guys sharing your spotlight puts a damper on your own personal success, too. Why stick around and split the profits when you can be a bigger star all on your own?! For some pop acts like Emblem3, it doesn’t make a difference who leaves, because nobody is really going to care about whatever solo thing they do. But groups like The Wanted? Nathan Sykes is bound to get big with anything he does now that The Wanted is done.

One Direction’s Niall Horan reached out to fans on Twitter yesterday with a very important plea – stop throwing things onstage. The concept, which may be obvious to some, was clearly unfamiliar to attendees at 1D’s gig in Amsterdam on June 25, during which the 1D guys got pelted with a number of objects thrown by fans. Niall, who went through unspecified “major knee surgery” back in January, is still recovering.

On Tuesday night (3 June 2014) One Direction took to the stage at Edinburgh Murrayfield Stadium for thousands of Scottish 1D fans, as their 'Where We Are Stadium Tour 2014' arrived in the country's capital.

Despite a lot of fans claiming to have abandoned the band after a video of members Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson smoking marijuana in Peru was uploaded, it seems the British boyband still have fans aplenty, as they broke the record for the biggest single show in Scottish history with 64,000+ fans almost filling the 67,800 capacity venue.

Being caught with a joint is really nothing new in the world of pop, especially amongst those aggressively seeking a change of image that will subsequently add a semblance of ‘edge’ to their persona. For child stars especially, in attempts to free themselves from their enforced clean-cut youth and iconic childhood roles, to indulge in the smoking of marijuana is the go-to method of both distancing oneself from the past and declaring oneself as a fully independent adult.

The group have come under fire from the tabloids for Zayn and Louis' actions.

The celebrity world abounds with examples of such exploits. Remember the media storm over Justin Bieber’s incident with a “suspicious cigarette” or Miley Cyrus’ bong exploits, which have now evolved into her free and consistent utilization of marijuana symbolism? The celebrity media loves a scandal more than a Republican loves his right to bear firearms, but whilst the current One Direction drug ‘scandal’ has rather predictably been plastered all over the tabloid’s front pages, the majority of the public greets it with a collective shrug of the shoulders. They are, after all, adolescents- the prime age for indulging in experimentation with illicit substances and activities. Most adults will have indulged in similar instances of experimentation with an array substances at a similar age to these patchy-bearded pop stars. In terms of the pop world, this particular act has been seen many times before; so many times, in fact, that the whole ‘rebellion’ phase is part and parcel of the child actor discourse. Some take it just a little too far, and the ensuing descent into drugs has unfortunately claimed the lives of many of Hollywood’s exploited youngsters.

Louis Tomlinson of One Direction has come under fire for not only sharing a marijuana joint with fellow band member Zayn Malik but also using a shortened version of the N-word in the same leaked video. The new clip has sent shockwaves through One Direction's young fanbase as it presents a very different image to that of the usually squeaky clean singers.

Filmed in the car on the way to a recent concert in Peru, the clip shows Zayn and Louis joking around with members of their crew and passing around a joint which is referred to as "Mary Jane," a euphemism for weed. Feathers have also been ruffled by Louis' flippant attitude towards police that they pass and is heard referring to the law enforcers as the "po po."

Tomlinson is heard seeming to say "It's green only, n**" and blowing spoke whilst sharing the joint with the other passengers. A motorcycle police officer drives past and Louis says: "He's having a look. He's thinking 'I'm sure I can smell an illegal substance in there'. And he's hit the nail on the head."

"You & I", One Direction's new music video, has finally been released. The video sees the five boy band members walking individually along the picturesque Clevendon Pier in Somerset. Each wearing a grey fisherman jumper, the boy’s faces are interchangeable throughout the video.  As each boy finishes singing, his face changes into another's.  At the end of the video all five appear on screen together.

The video wasn’t the only exciting premiere for fans of One Direction. Liam Payne debuted a rugged new beard, while Harry Styles looked increasingly Jagger-esque with his long curly hair.

It must seem to poor Kim Kardashian like she can’t get anything right! Kardashian has come under fire for donating only 10% of the profits which she rakes in from clothing auctions on auction website eBay to charity. RadarOnline have managed to get their hands on the tax documents from Kim’s November auction, for which she raised money for Life Change Community Church in California. The documents state that Kim donated $19,975 to charity, a pretty meagre sum in the grand scheme of things, considering the mum of one is worth an estimated $40 million.

Surprise, surprise, Jennifer Lawrence was among the winners at last night’s Kids Choice Awards. Lawrence won for Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Female Buttkicker, which might just be the best award title ever invented. In more news you probably saw coming, everyone’s favorite band of perfectly coiffed British dudes, One Direction, won Favorite Music Group and Favorite Song with Story of Us.

More importantly, the award show continued the beloved tradition of surprise slimings. For those not in the know, that’s the show’s way of combining humor with mild public humiliation, by pouring buckets of green goop on several unsuspecting presenters. One of the most hotly anticipated parts of the award show is finding out which celebrities needed an extra thorough shower at the end of the night. This year there were only three victims – Pharell Williams, sporting  bright yellow SpongeBob SquarePants pajamas, took a shot of the show's trademark green goo, but he took it like a champ. Pharrell and Kaley Cuoco did not manage to avoid the slime at this year's Nickelodeon's 27th Annual Kids' Choice Awards. The awards, hosted by Mark Wahlberg, were held yesterday night (29th March) at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles.

One Direction won the awards for Favourite Music Group and Favourite Song.

Music wise, One Direction did incredibly well gaining the awards for Favourite Song with 'Story of My Life' and Favourite Music Group. Whilst, in the solo category, Justin Timberlake received took home the award for Favourite Male Singer and Selena Gomez for Favourite Female Singer. Gomez was seemingly delighted with the award and tweeted thanking her fans for voting for her, adding a picture of her after the awards grinning broadly.

Harry Styles is everywhere as of late but usually it's without his One Direction bandmates. Solo Styles has been stepping out without the other boys so much lately it's leading some people to wonder if the boy band member is about to go on his own 'direction' (we had to). Despite the boys appearing together at last month’s Brit Awards, the group really haven't been showing much unity as of late, instead everything seems to have become the Harry Styles' show. Even at the Brits ceremony he took the spotlight by having to dash on to the stage late when the band collected their global success award.

One Direction may have walked away with their fourth BRIT award on Wednesday (this time the award acknowledged their Global Success) but that hasn’t stopped talk of One Direction splitting up. 1D was formed in 2010 after they finished third in the seventh series of The X Factor and have since gone on to achieve worldwide fame, as well as accumulating an extremely spirited and vocal bunch of fans along the way. Their three albums have broken all sorts of records and have topped global charts so the last thing that anybody expected was the shocking revelation that they may have come to the end of the line (note educated reference to ultimate 1990’s boy band lyric).
