The One Direction cultural juggernaut rampages onwards, mercilessly laying waste to every record and sales landmark in its path. The band’s second movie One Direction: Where We Are – The Concert Film has smashed global box office records during its one weekend only run in cinemas worldwide.

Last weekend saw One Direction unleash their new film worldwide on a limited run, which has set box office records

An unprecedented 3,400 screens in 78 countries screened the new movie, which was filmed at the San Siro stadium in Milan during the Italian section of their world tour in June this year. Arts Alliance worked alongside 1D’s record company Syco and the production partners Fulwell to put together the movie event, which has united the biggest band in the world with the biggest ever audience across one weekend.

It’s set to be a record for the Event Cinema concept, which seeks to bring live events to cinema audiences in one-off or limited runs of screenings. Early indications are that over 1.2 million tickets were sold worldwide, and the event was the global number one trending topic on Twitter over the weekend.

The international per screen average taking is $4,500, and extrapolated worldwide the box office total is likely to top $15 million. Showings were particularly strong in North America and Britain, with $3.4 million and $1.9 million predicted respectively.

As if it needed to be proved again, the figures show the immense pulling power of One Direction. Last year’s Midnight Memories was the biggest selling album of 2013 worldwide despite only having five weeks to do it in, having come out in late November. They also became the first band ever to have their first three albums all debut at Number 1 in the American Billboard 200.

One Direction: Where We Are – The Concert Film is set for traditional physical release in time for Christmas, with the date set for 28th November. The band’s fourth studio album Four is due for release on 17th November, and contains the current single ‘Steal My Girl’.
